Vegetable oil is one of the most important components of human nutrition. Soybean (Glycine max) is an important oil crop worldwide and contains rich unsaturated fatty acids. Diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) is a key rate-limiting enzyme in the Kennedy pathway from diacylglycerol (DAG) to triacylglycerol (TAG). In this study, we conducted further research using T3 AhDGAT3 transgenic soybean. A high-performance gas chromatography flame ionization detector showed that oleic acid (181) content and total fatty acid content of transgenic soybean were significantly higher than those of the wild type (WT). However, linoleic acid (182) was much lower than that in the WT. For further mechanistic studies, 20 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and 119 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were identified between WT (JACK) and AhDGAT3 transgenic soybean mature seeds using proteomic and lipidomics analyses. Combined proteomic and lipidomics analyses showed that the upregulation of the key DEP (lipase GDSL domain-containing protein) in lipid transport and metabolic process induced an increase in the total fatty acid and 181 composition, but a decrease in the 182 composition of fatty acids. Our study provides new insights into the deep study of molecular mechanism underlying the enhancement of fatty acids in transgenic soybeans, especially oleic acid and total fatty acid, which are enhanced by over-expression of AhDGAT3.The Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS) of Burkina Faso, West Africa, was the first African institution to import transgenic mosquitoes for research purposes. A shift from the culture of mosquito research to regulated biotechnology research and considerable management capacity is needed to set up and run the first insectary for transgenic insects in a country that applied and adapted the existing biosafety framework, first developed for genetically modified (GM) crops, to this new area of research. The additional demands arise from the separate regulatory framework for biotechnology, referencing the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and the novelty of the research strain, making public understanding and acceptance early in the research pathway important. The IRSS team carried out extensive preparations following recommendations for containment of GM arthropods and invested efforts in local community engagement and training with scientific colleagues throughout the region. Record keeping beyondoring native populations of Anopheles gambiae s.l.Traffic sign detection (TSD) in real-time environment holds great importance for applications such as automated-driven vehicles. Large variety of traffic signs, different appearances, and spatial representations causes a huge intraclass variation. In this article, an extreme learning machine (ELM), convolutional neural network (CNN), and scale transformation (ST)-based model, called improved extreme learning machine network, are proposed to detect traffic signs in real-time environment. The proposed model has a custom DenseNet-based novel CNN architecture, improved version of region proposal networks called accurate anchor prediction model (A2PM), ST, and ELM module. CNN architecture makes use of handcrafted features such as scale-invariant feature transform and Gabor to improvise the edges of traffic signs. The A2PM minimizes the redundancy among extracted features to make the model efficient and ST enables the model to detect traffic signs of different sizes. ELM module enhances the efficiency by reshaping the features. The proposed model is tested on three publicly available data sets, challenging unreal and real environments for traffic sign recognition, Tsinghua-Tencent 100K, and German traffic sign detection benchmark and achieves average precisions of 93.31%, 95.22%, and 99.45%, respectively. These results prove that the proposed model is more efficient than state-of-the-art sign detection techniques.Peripheral nerve adhesion after neurolysis leads to nerve dysfunction, limiting nerve regeneration and functional recovery. We previously developed an electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL)-amnion nanofibrous membrane for preventing adhesion formation. In this study, we investigated the effect of protective nerve wrapping and promoting nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve compression model. A total of 96 SD rats after sciatic nerve chronic compression were randomly divided into three groups the PCL-amniotic group, in which nerves were wrapped with a PCL-amniotic membrane for treatment; the chitosan group, in which nerves were wrapped with a clinically used chitosan hydrogel; the control group, which involved neurolysis alone without treatment. Twelve weeks postoperatively, the nerve regeneration was evaluated by general and ultrastructure observation, as well as the expressions of neuronal regeneration and inflammatory reaction biomarkers. The nerve functions were assessed with gastrocnemius muscle measurement, hot-plate test, and walking track analysis. Compared with the chitosan hydrogel, the PCL-amnion nanofibrous membrane significantly reduced peripheral nerve adhesion and promoted nerve regeneration. The morphological properties of axons in the nerve wrap group were preserved. Intraneural macrophage invasion, as assessed by the number of CD68-positive cells, was less severe in the PCL-amnion group than in the other groups. Additionally, the gastrocnemius muscle weight and muscle bundle area were significantly higher in the PCL-amnion group than those in the chitosan group. The abilities of sense and movement of the rats in the PCL-amnion group were significantly improved compared to the other groups. In summary, electrospun PCL-amnion nanofibrous membranes effectively prevented post-neurolysis peripheral nerves from developing adhesion, whereas promoted nerve repair and regeneration, which make PCL-amnion nanofibrous membranes a promising biomaterial for clinical application.
Microbeam radiotherapy (MRT) is a still experimental radiotherapy approach. Two combined parameters contribute to an excellent normal tissue protection and an improved control of malignant tumors in small animal models, compared to conventional radiotherapy dose deposition at a high dose rate and spatial fractionation at the micrometre level. The international microbeam research community expects to see clinical MRT trials within the next ten years.Physics-associated research is still widely regarded as a male domain. Thus, the question was asked whether this is reflected in the scientific contributions to the field of microbeam radiotherapy.

A literature search was conducted using Pubmed, Semantic Scholar and other sources to look specifically for female contributors to the field of microbeam radiotherapy development.

The original idea for MRT was patented in 1994 by an all-male research team. In approximately 50% of all publications related to microbeam radiotherapy, however, either the first or the senior author is a woman. The contribution of those women who have been driving the development of both technical and biomedical aspects of MRT in the last two decades is highlighted.

This study was aimed to explore the feasibility of using the Miscanthus-microbe combination to reduce Pb pollution in the farmland surrounding a lead-zinc mining area. We have screened three heteroauxin (IAA)-producing microbes (Lelliottia jeotgali MR2, Klebsiella michiganensis TS8, and Klebsiella michiganensis ZR1) with high Pb tolerance. The IAA-producing ability of the mixed-species was stronger than that of the single bacterium. In pot experiments, the mixed-species of MR2-ZR1 and MR2-TS8 had better performance in enhancing the weight of Miscanthus grass (increased by 22.2-53.6% compared to the control group without inoculating microbes). buy Zn-C3 The remediation efficiency of Pb was significantly higher in the MR2 (30.79%), MR2-TS8 (24.96%), and TS8-ZR1 (21.10%) groups than that in the control group (6.75%). We speculated that MR2 and mixed species of MR2-TS8 and TS8-ZR1 could promote the percentages of activated Pb fractions in soils and increase the Pb uptake of M. floridulus (Lab.). These results implied that the MR2-TS8 mixed-species might be selected as the effective microbial agent to simultaneously enhance the remediation efficiency of Pb-contaminated soils and the biomass of M. floridulus (Lab.).
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has become a predominant global health concern. The visual function of individuals with AMD seems to improve with dietary antioxidants. We assessed the efficacy of different antioxidants (carotenoids, zinc, vitamin E, and multivitamin) on visual function and the incidence of developing late AMD.

We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for related published studies. We considered randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing different nutrients. The main outcomes measurements included changes in visual acuity (VA), and the rate of developing late AMD. The network meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020171288).

We identified 13 studies, including 85321 individuals randomly assigned to different nutrients or placebo groups. In the network meta-analysis, we found that there was more risk of progression to late AMD in the multivitamin group than carotenoids and vitamin E groups (RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.65; RR 0.56, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.79; RR 0.42, 95% CI 0.26 to 0.67). The nutrients of zinc and carotenoids (Lutein/Zeaxanthin) ranked first and second and showed better improvement in VA. The efficacy of carotenoids (β-carotene) ranked first for delaying the progress of AMD among all of the four treatments.

Taking multivitamin supplementation may not prevent the development of late AMD. The nutrient of zinc and carotenoids (lutein/zeaxanthin) supplementation were associated with better improvement in VA. Carotenoids (β-carotene) were the most likely to prevent the progression of late AMD.

Low dose radiation therapy (LDRT) using doses in the range of 30-150 cGy has been proposed as a means of mitigating the pneumonia associated with COVID-19. However, preliminary results from ongoing clinical trials have been mixed. The aim of this work is to develop a mathematical model of the viral infection and associated systemic inflammation in a patient based on the time evolution of the viral load. The model further proposes an immunomodulatory response to LDRT based on available data. Inflammation kinetics are then explored and compared to clinical results.

The time evolution of a viral infection, inflammatory signaling factors, and inflammatory response are modeled by a set of coupled differential equations. Adjustable parameters are taken from the literature where available and otherwise iteratively adjusted to fit relevant data. Simple functions modeling both the suppression of pro-inflammatory signal factors and the enhancement of anti-inflammatory factors in response to low doses of radiation are developed.
