The cerebral vasculature may be susceptible to the adverse effects of type 2 diabetes. In this pilot study, we compared cerebral blood flow (CBF) in youth with type 2 diabetes to obese, euglycemic controls, and explored the association between CBF and a non-invasive measure of atherosclerosis, carotid intima-medial thickness (IMT).

Global and regional CBF were compared between youth with type 2 diabetes (mean age 16.7 ± 2.0 years, n=20) and age, race, and sex similar obese youth without diabetes (17.4 ± 1.9 years, n=19) using arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging. Mean CBF values were compared between groups. Voxel-wise results were evaluated for statistical significance (p < 0.05) after adjustment for multiple comparisons. Carotid IMT in the type 2 diabetes group was correlated with CBF.

Compared to obese controls, the type 2 diabetes group had significantly lower global CBF (49.7 ± 7.2 vs. 63.8 ± 11.5ml/gm/min, p < 0.001). Significantly lower CBF was observed in multiple brain regions for the type 2 diabetes group, while no regions with higher CBF were identified. In the type 2 diabetes group, carotid IMT was inversely correlated with CBF, both globally (r=-0.70, p=0.002) and in regional clusters.

To estimate the risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer in Japan and identify risk factors for MDD among these patients.

This was a matched cohort study using a large claims database in Japan. Included patients were aged 15-39years, newly diagnosed with cancer during 2012-2017 and assessable for a follow-up period of 12months. Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for MDD in the AYA patients with cancer versus age-, sex- and working status-matched cancer-free controls. A subgroups analysis of the AYA patients with cancer was performed to explore MDD risk factors.

A total of 3559 AYA patients with cancer and 35,590 matched controls were included in the analysis. Adolescent and young adult patients with cancer had a three-fold higher risk for MDD compared with cancer-free controls (HR, 3.12; 95% CI, 2.64-3.70). Among cancer categories with >100 patients, patients with multiple cancer categories, including those with metastatic cancer (HR, 6.73, 95% CI, 3.65-12.40) and leukemia (HR, 6.30; 95% CI, 3.75-10.58), had the greatest MDD risk versus matched controls. Patients who received inpatient chemotherapy as initial treatment had a higher risk for MDD than patients without chemotherapy (HR, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.30-0.62).

The purpose of the current study was to examine the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among adults with eating disorders (EDs), to assess whether experiencing a greater number of ACEs is associated with more severe ED psychopathology, and to determine whether ACEs predict treatment outcome.

Participants were 1819 patients (88.5% female, ages 18-72) admitted to one of two treatment facilities at inpatient, residential, or partial hospitalisation levels of care. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey and the Eating Pathology Symptom Inventory (EPSI) were completed at admission and the EPSI at discharge.

Female patients reported higher ACEs than males (p=0.03), and all diagnoses except avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder had significantly higher ACEs than patients with anorexia nervosa-restricting type (AN-R) (p's<0.01). Across diagnoses, higher ACEs were associated with decreases in binge eating scores during treatment, but were not associated with changes in purging or restricting. Within diagnoses, higher ACEs scores were associated with decreases in purging for patients with AN-R and increases in purging for patients with binge eating disorder.

Under a pure acetylene stream, this Zn-C2 H2 battery exhibits an open circuit potential of 1.14 V and a peak power density of 2.2 mW cm-2 , which exceed those of reported Zn-CO2 batteries. Even for simulated crude ethylene, the Zn-C2 H2 battery manifests an acetylene conversion of 99.97 % and continuously produces polymer-grade ethylene with only ≈3 ppm acetylene during a long-term discharge operation. Such a functional battery is universally appliable for reducing other alkynes and generating electricity. We exploit variation in rainfall shocks to instrument for non-random air pollution exposure. The purpose of this study was to examine associations among measures of adiposity including total, visceral, and organ fat (hepatic and pancreatic) and whether these measures were independently associated with glycemia in Latino youth at risk for diabetes.

Latino adolescents (47 boys and 32 girls, 13.7 ± 1.4 years) with obesity (BMIz 2.3 ± 0.3) were assessed for total fat by DXA and visceral and organ fat by 3 T magnetic resonance imaging. Glycemic indicators included HbA1c, fasting glucose (FG), and 2-h glucose (2-HrG) following an oral glucose tolerance test. Pearson correlations and stepwise linear regression analyses controlling for age and sex were used to examine independent associations between adiposity and glycemia.

Total fat was associated with visceral (r=0.66, p=0.001) and hepatic fat (r=0.34, p < 0.01) while visceral fat was associated with hepatic (r=0.42, p < 0.001) and pancreatic fat (r=0.36, p < 0.001). In stepwise linear regression analysis, hepatic and pancreatic fat were significant predictors of FG, explaining 4.7% and 5.2% of the variance, respectively (total R

Herein, a new strategy using monodispersed metal sites to tailor Pt-based nanocatalysts is addressed by engineering unconventional p-d orbital hybridization. Thus, monodispersed Ga on Pt3 Mn nanocrystals (Ga-O-Pt3 Mn) with high-indexed facets was constructed for the first time to drive ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR). Strikingly, the Ga-O-Pt3 Mn nanocatalyst shows an enhanced EOR performance with achieving 8.41 times of specific activity than that of Pt/C. The electrochemical in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results and theoretical calculations disclose that the Ga-O-Pt3 Mn nanocatalyst featuring an unconventional p-d orbital hybridization not only promote the C-C bond-breaking and rapid oxidation of -OH of ethanol, but also inhibit the generation of poisonous CO intermediate species. This work discloses a promising strategy to construct a novel nanocatalysts tailored by monodispersed metal site as efficient fuel cell catalysts.
