Twenty-seven derivatives (40-66) were generated by pharmacophore fusing of sulfonylacetanilide-diarylpyrimidine (1) with rilpivirine or biphenyl-diarylpyrimidines. They displayed up to single-digit nanomolar activity against wild-type (WT) virus and various drug-resistant mutant strains in HIV-1-infected MT-4 cells, thereby targeting the reverse transcriptase (RT) enzyme. Compound 51 displayed exceptionally potent activity against WT virus (EC50 = 6 nM) and several mutant strains (L100I, EC50 = 8 nM, K103N, EC50 = 6 nM, Y181C, EC50 = 26 nM, Y188L, EC50 = 122 nM, E138K, EC50 = 26 nM). The structure-activity relationships of the newly obtained pyrimidine sulfonylacetanilides were also elucidated. Molecular docking analysis explained the activity and provided a structural insight for follow-up research. With population ageing, cancer treatments in elder patients is becoming a true public health care issue. There is an authentic dilemma between patient's frailty, residual life expectancy and the toll that take anticancer treatments. Since elder patients are almost always excluded from clinical trials, it is hard to get robust scientific data on the tolerability of oncologic treatments and to set in place recommendations. Cervix cancer is traditionally diagnosed in younger women but it has a 2nd incidence peak between 60 and 70 years old. Cervix cancer in elder patients is a subject to many questions in terms of screening and is a therapeutic challenge. This article reviews literature data on these different aspects, from screening to surgery, from radiotherapy to brachytherapy, from chemotherapy to supportive care, from immunotherapy to geriatric assessment. We tried to show how modern therapeutic innovations may benefit elder patients. Expected benefits in terms of efficacy and toxicity may overcome the long-lasting tendency to undertreatment in elder patients and improve their quality of life after cancer treatment. In 2020, there seems to be less and less reasons justifying that elder women with cervix cancer may not receive the appropriate treatment. The sorption behaviour of three perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), namely perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), was determined on 28 tropical soils. Tropical soils are often highly weathered, richer in sesquioxides than temperate soils and may contain variable charge minerals. There are little data on sorption of PFASs in tropical soils. The highest Kd values were found for PFOS with mean values ranging from 0 to 31.6 L/kg. The Kd values for PFOA and PFHxS ranged from 0 to 4.9 L/kg and from 0 to 5.6 L/kg, respectively. While these values are in the range of literature sorption data, the average Kd values for PFOS and PFOA from the literature were 3.7 times and 3.6 times higher, respectively, than those measured in this study. Stepwise regression analysis did explain some of the variance, but with different explanatory variables for the different PFASs. The main soil properties explaining sorption for PFOS and PFOA were oxalate-extractable Al and pH, and for PFHxS was pH. RATIONALE Cognitive impairment is one of the most common complaints for persons with epilepsy (PWE). These impairments are not only associated with seizures, but are also regularly reported as adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Previous studies have examined cognitive effects of both AED monotherapy and polytherapy, yet there is limited research on these differences with respect to both subjective and objective cognition. The current study uses data from previous research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-sponsored Managing Epilepsy Well (MEW) Network collaborative. We used three distinct archival datasets from the following (1) the HOBSCOTCH efficacy trial at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (HOB-1), (2) the multisite replication trial (HOB-2), and (3) epilepsy self-management research conducted at the NYU School of Medicine. METHODS This retrospective analysis combined baseline data from three datasets to determine how the number of AEDs and the type of AEDs werineffective AEDs should be replaced, rather than introducing additional AEDs to a treatment regimen. Further, while subjective and objective cognition assessments were both sensitive at detecting differences based on AED status, the neuropsychological objective subdomains offer additional and specific insights into how cognition is impaired with AEDs. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the coping strategies of people living with epilepsy (PLWEs) and their health outcomes. METHODS This was a descriptive-exploratory, qualitative study. Face-to-face, in-depth interviews were carried out on a purposive sample of 13 PLWEs using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim, and the data were analyzed using the content analysis approach. RESULTS Positive coping strategies adopted included problem-focused coping, faith in God, social support, and lifestyle changes. Negative coping strategies adopted were thinking and worrying and concealing diagnosis. Treatment modalities for epilepsy were spiritual intervention, traditional, or orthodox medicines or a combination of two or more. A reduction in the frequency and severity of seizures was a positive outcome, and the worsening of seizures was a negative outcome. CONCLUSION The consultation of spiritualists and herbalists for treatment was a reflection of their beliefs about the causes of epilepsy among the participants. There is a need for increased education on epilepsy in Ghana. Clinical observations have often reported that patients with seizures arising from limbic structures on the right side of the brain have a higher incidence of emotional disturbances, such as fear and anxiety, than those who have seizures lateralized to limbic structures on the left side. However, there have been some inconsistent reports regarding the presence of these laterality effects. The use of animal models of epilepsy can help circumvent many of the methodological and ethical issues that arise from human clinical studies. In the present study, we examined the unique contribution of left- or right-sided long-term kindling of the amygdala on the development of interictal emotional disturbances. Following kindling to 99 electrical stimulations, male kindled and control rats were examined on a series of behavioral tests - open-field exploration, elevated plus maze, forced swim, and social interaction. Endophytic bacteria have been explored for their role in plant growth promotion, however, not much has been explored in cucumber. The metabolomic response of plants to application of such microbes also remains largely unknown. Thus, we investigated the application of endophytic bacteria to cucumber to infer their role in plant growth promotion and document metabolome response. The lowest healthy leaf-stalks were sampled from four differently sourced cucumber plants, and endophytic bacteria were isolated after surface disinfection. Initial plant growth-promoting (PGP) screening was performed to identify PGP strains out of numerous isolates, and five strains (Strains 4=Curtobacterium spp., 72=Brevibacillus spp., 167=Paenibacillus spp., 193=Bacillus spp., and 227=Microbacterium spp.) were selected based on their contribution to root growth compared with the control. The selected strains were further evaluated in pot experiments, axenic PGP trait assays, and metabolomic analysis. Results revealed that the selected isolates possessed different qualitative characteristics among indole acetic acid, siderophore production, phosphate solubilization, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC)-deaminase and nifH genes, and all isolates significantly enhanced plant growth in both pot experiments compared with the uninoculated control and fertilizer control. Metabolomic profiling revealed that both strains affected the plant metabolomes compared with the uninoculated control. Around 50 % of the metabolites explored had higher concentrations in either or both bacteria-applied plants compared with the uninoculated control. Differences were observed in both strains' regulation of metabolites, although both enhanced root growth near equally. Overall, endophytic bacteria significantly enhanced plant growth and tended to produce or induce release of certain metabolites within the plant endosphere. The opioid epidemic is having a disproportionate impact on veterans. Indeed, veterans are twice as likely to die from an accidental overdose than members of the general population, even after accounting for gender and age distribution. Although many veterans seek treatment, a large proportion drop out prematurely and/or relapse highlighting the need to identify malleable factors that may contribute to the recovery process. One such variable is anxiety sensitivity (AS; i.e., fear of anxious arousal). AS is elevated in opioid use populations and is a predictor of treatment dropout among opioid users. Importantly, research suggests that AS is highly malleable; although, no studies have systematically examined such protocols among opioid users. To this end, the purpose of the proposed study was to test the acceptability, feasibility, and utility of a brief, one-session Computerized Anxiety Sensitivity Treatment (termed CAST) delivered to veterans seeking services for an opioid use disorder (OUD). Veterans (n = 16) were assessed at baseline and also at one-week and one-month following CAST.
