Mitigation of photoreceptor degeneration in MNU-treated retinas was observed by optical coherence tomography and retinal histological examination. In addition, Western blotting results revealed that ALDH2 protein expression level was upregulatedwith increased expression of SIRT1 protein after the Alda-1 intervention. Besides, endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) was reduced according to the significant downregulation of GRP78 protein, while apoptosis was ameliorated as shown by the decreased expression of PARP1 protein. CONCLUSIONS Together, our data demonstrated that ALDH2 could provide preservation of retinal function and morphology against MNU-induced RP, with the underlying mechanism at least partly related to the modulation of SIRT1, ERS and apoptosis.BACKGROUND Sarcomatoid differentiation in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with vena caval tumour thrombus has been shown to be associated with aggressive behaviours and poor prognosis; however, evidence of the impact of rhabdoid differentiation on prognosis is lacking. This study evaluated the impact of sarcomatoid differentiation and rhabdoid differentiation on oncological outcomes for RCC with vena caval tumour thrombus treated surgically. METHODS We retrospectively analysed patients treated surgically for RCC with vena caval tumour thrombus at our institute from Jan 2015 to Nov 2018. Prognostic variables were evaluated for associations with progression-free survival (PFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine independent prognostic variables. RESULTS We identified 125 patients with RCC and vena caval tumour thrombus, including 17 (13.6%) with sarcomatoid differentiation alone, 8 (6.4%) with rhabdoipredictors of poor prognosis in RCC with vena caval tumour thrombus treated surgically.BACKGROUND Peer navigation is a promising strategy to link at-risk minority men who have sex with men (MSM) to HIV prevention services including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). METHODS Thirty-two Black and 63 Latinx HIV-negative MSM living in western Washington completed a survey examining attitudes towards peer navigation and PrEP. Factor analysis derived a score for peer navigator acceptability, and linear regression identified associations with this outcome. RESULTS Forty-eight percent were interested in peer navigation. Being insured, higher sexual stigma, and higher PHQ-9 score were associated with higher acceptability, while higher income and having a regular medical provider were associated with lower acceptability. In multivariable analysis, higher sexual stigma predicted higher acceptability, while higher income predicted lower acceptability. Men preferred that peers be matched on sexual orientation, race, age and culture. CONCLUSION Peer navigation interventions to reach minority men should address stigma, focus on lower-income men, and try to match peers to clients to the extent possible.BACKGROUND Surgical correction of hyperparathyroidism after kidney transplantation has been associated with significant graft function decline. We examined the effects of parathyroidectomy on short- and long-term graft function and its potential predictors. METHODS For this retrospective, monocentric study we identified 48 (5.5%) out of 892 patients from our protocol biopsy program who received renal transplantation between 2000 and 2007, with parathyroidectomy after transplantation. Data from up to three years after parathyroidectomy was collected and analyzed with multivariable linear regression analyses. RESULTS Main indications for parathyroidectomy were hypercalcemia and graft calcifications. Parathyroidectomy was successful in 47 patients, with a median drop in serum intact parathormone (iPTH) from 394 to 21 pg/ml. Mean estimated glomerular fitration rate (eGFR) before parathyroidectomy was 60 ± 26 ml/min. At three months after parathyroidectomy, the eGFR was 46 ± 18 ml/min (p less then 0.001) but remained stable at one and three years (50 ± 20; 49 ± 20 ml/min). The median annual eGFR change was - 0.5 ml/min before and + 1.0 ml/min after parathyroidectomy. Multivariable modeling identified high iPTH levels and higher eGFR before parathyroidectomy as predictors of the eGFR drop after parathyroidectomy. Lower graft function twelve months after parathyroidectomy was predicted by the eGFR before and the iPTH drop after surgery. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that the extent of parathyroidectomy is critical and too much lowering of iPTH should be avoided by timely parathyroidectomy, before reaching extreme high iPTH values. In view of the observed loss of eGFR, parathyroidectomy can be considered safe in patients with an eGFR above 30 ml/min.BACKGROUND Suicide mortality is high in Japan and early interventional strategies to solve that problem are needed. An accurate evaluation of the regional status of current suicide mortality would be useful for community interventions. A few studies in Kanagawa prefecture, located next to Tokyo and with the second largest population in Japan, have identified spatial clusters of suicide mortality at regional levels. This study examined spatial clustering and clustering over time of such events using spatial data from regional statistics on suicide deaths. METHODS Data were obtained from regional statistics (58 regions in Kanagawa prefecture) of the National Vital Statistics of Japan from 2011 to 2017. check details The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) and Empirical Bayes estimator for the SMR (EBSMR) were used as measures. Spatial clusters were examined by Kulldorff's circular spatial scan statistic, Tango-Takahashi's flexible spatial scan statistic and Tango's test. Linear regression and conditional autoregressive (CAR) ally, Kawasaki ward was detected as a high risk region in many years. CONCLUSION The present results detected some spatial clustering of suicide deaths within certain regions. Factors related to suicide deaths were also indicated. These results would provide important information in policy making for suicide prevention.
