Toenails have been used as biomarkers of exposure to toxic metals, but their validity for this purpose is not yet clear and might differ depending on the specific agent. To evaluate this issue, we reviewed the literature on a) the time-window of exposure reflected by toenails; b) the reproducibility of toenail toxic-metal levels in repeated measures over time; c) their relationship with other biomarkers of exposure, and; d) their association with potential determinants (i.e. sociodemographic, anthropometric, or lifestyle characteristics) or with sources of exposure like diet or environmental pollution. Thus, we performed a systematic review, searching for articles that provided original data for levels of any of the following toxic metals in toenails aluminum, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, thallium and uranium. We identified 88 articles, reporting data from 67 different research projects, which were quite heterogeneous with regard to population profile, sample size and analytical technidization in sample collection, quality control, analytical techniques and procedures - along with the heterogeneity and conflicting results among studies - mean it is still difficult to conclude that toenails are a good biomarker of exposure to toxic metals. Further studies are needed to draw solid conclusions about the suitability of toenails as biomarkers of exposure to toxic metals.Laboratory studies were conducted with the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), to evaluate nymphal and adult biology on immature pods of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill (Fabaceae), bearing the block technology (resistant to stink bug damage - cvs. BRS 391, BRS 543 RR and BRS 1003 IPRO) compared to a susceptible cultivar (BRS 5601 RR). Results indicated that nymphs' developmental time and survivorship were similar on all cultivars tested. The same was observed for adult survivorship and reproductive performance. However, data from electropenetrography (EPG) demonstrated that adults of E. heros spent significantly less time in feeding activities on resistant plants compared to the susceptible one. Large differences were observed in feeding activities on seeds; on resistant plants, the insects dedicated a shorter period of time to feed on seed endosperm than on BRS 5601. In addition, when bugs fed on seeds of block cultivars, the majority of probes were composed of only laceration/maceration activities (Eh3a waveform) without ingestion events of the cell contents (Eh3b waveform). In contrast, on the susceptible cultivar, Eh3a waveform events were repeated much more frequently (3-5X) with more probes also containing ingestion of seed contents. These results suggest that the soybean cultivars bearing the block technology presented a lower preference (antixenosis) by the bugs with fewer feeding activities, primarily in the seed endosperm, compared to the susceptible one tested.The practice of coaching using positive psychology is an emerging and promising approach to address the radiologist burnout epidemic, with the focus on wellness even more urgent given the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and other recent stressful events. Nonlinear signal processing techniques such as sample entropy is a novel approach to characterize the temporal dynamics of brain connectivity. Estimating entropy is especially important in clinical populations such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as differences in entropy may signal functional alterations in the brain. Considering the models of disrupted brain network connectivity in ASD, sample entropy would provide a novel direction to understand brain organization. Resting state fMRI data from 45 high-functioning children with ASD and 45 age-and-IQ-matched typically developing (TD) children were obtained from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE-II) database. Data were preprocessed using the CONN toolbox. Sample entropy was then calculated using the complexity toolbox, in a whole-brain voxelwise manner as well as in regions of interests (ROIs) based methods. ASD participants demonstrated significantly increased entropy in left angular gyrus, superior parietal lobule, and right inferior temporal gyrus; and reduced sample entropy in superior frontal gyrus compared to TD participants. Positive correlations of average entropy in clusters of significant group differences scores across all subjects were found. Finally, ROI analysis revealed a main effect of lobes. Differences in entropy between the ASD and TD groups suggests that entropy may provide another important index of brain dysfunction in clinical populations like ASD. Further, the relationship between increased entropy and ASD symptoms in our study underscores the role of optimal brain synchronization in cognitive and behavioral functions.Central sensitization (CS) is characteristic of difficult to treat painful conditions, such as fibromyalgia and neuropathies and have sexual dimorphism involved. The calcium influx in nociceptive neurons is a key trigger for CS and the role of Cav2.1 and Cav2.2 voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) in this role were evidenced with the use of ω-agatoxin IVA and ω-agatoxin MVIIA blockers, respectively. However, the participation of the α1 subunit of the voltage-gated channel Cav2.3, which conducts R-type currents, in CS is unknown. Furthermore, the role of sexual differences in painful conditions is still poorly understood. Thus, we investigated the role of Cav2.3 in capsaicin-induced secondary hyperalgesia in mice, which serve as a CS model predictive of the efficacy of novel analgesic drugs. Capsaicin injection in C57BL/6 mice caused secondary hyperalgesia from one to five hours after injection, and the effects were similar in male and female mice. In female but not male mice, intrathecal treatment with the Cav2.3 inhibitor SNX-482 partially and briefly reversed secondary hyperalgesia at a dose (300 pmol/site) that did not cause adverse effects. Moreover, Cav2.3 expression in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and spinal cord was reduced by intrathecal treatment with an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) targeting Cav2.3 in female and male mice. However, ASO treatment was able to provide a robust and durable prevention of secondary hyperalgesia caused by capsaicin in female mice, but not in male mice. Thus, our results demonstrate that Cav2.3 inhibition, especially in female mice, has a relevant impact on a model of CS. Our results provide a proof of concept for Cav2.3 as a molecular target. The 3xTg-AD strain exhibits two hallmarks of AD, amyloid beta (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles. Several studies using different gender and age of 3xTg-AD mice to investigate their behavior phenotypes under the influence of various treatments have reported mixed results. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation on the optimal gender, age, and training paradigms used for behavioral studies of 3xTg-AD is necessary. In the present study, we investigated the behavioral phenotypes for the two genders of 3xTg-AD mice at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months old and compared the results with age-, gender-matched C57BL/6N control strain. All mice were subjected to tail flick, pinprick, open field, elevated plus maze, passive avoidance, and trace fear conditioning (TFC) tests to evaluate their sensory, locomotor, anxiety, and learning/memory functions. The results showed that TFC on male 3xTg-AD mice is optimal for studying the memory performance in AD. The sensory and locomotor functions of 3xTg-AD mice for two genders appear to be normal before 6 months, decline in fear memory afterwards. The differences between control and 3xTg-AD male mice in contextual and cued memory are robust, thus they are ideal for evaluating the effect of a treatment. Since it is costly and time consuming to obtain wildtype littermates as controls, C57BL/6N strain is suggested to be used as control mice because their baseline performance of sensorimotor functions are similar to that of 3xTg-AD mice.Studies have shown the brain's rich-club organization may underpin brain function and be associated with various brain disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relation between poststroke brain functions and functional recovery versus the rich-club organization of the structural brain network of patients after first-time acute ischemic stroke. A cohort of 16 acute ischemic stroke patients (11 males) was recruited. Structural brain networks were measured using diffusion tensor imaging within 1 week and at 1, 3 and 6 months after stroke. Motor impairment was assessed using the Upper-Extremity Fugl-Meyer motor scale and activities of daily living using the Barthel Index at the same time points as MRI. The rich-club regions that were stable over the course of stroke recovery included the bilateral dorsolateral superior frontal gyri, right supplementary motor area, and left median cingulate and paracingulate gyri. The network properties that correlated with poststroke brain functions were mainly the ratio between communication cost ratio and density ratio of rich-club, feeder and local connections. The recovery of both motor functions and activities of daily living were correlated with higher normalized rich club coefficients and a shorter length of local connections within a week after stroke. The communication cost ratio of feeder connections, the length of rich-club and local connections, and normalized rich club coefficients were found to be potential prognostic indicators of stroke recovery. Our results provide additional support to the notion that different types of network connections play different roles in brain functions as well as functional recovery.
