The central composite-based design of the experiment was applied to optimize the parameters of the prehydrothermal carbonization procedure resulting in the fabrication of N-enriched carbonaceous products with the highest possible mass yield and nitrogen content. The resulting hydrochars and activated carbon samples were characterized using elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. We observe that while N-doping and the activation process can individually enhance the CO2 adsorption capacity to some extent, it is the combined effect of the two processes that synergistically work to greatly increase the adsorption capacity of the N-doped activated carbon by an amount which is more than the sum of individual contributions. We analyze the origins of this synergy with both physical and chemical characterization techniques. The BN films loaded with a mixture of gentamicin (150 and 300 μg/cm2) and amphotericin B (100 μg/cm2) effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli K-261 and Neurospora crassa strains. During immersion in the normal saline solution, the BN film generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can lead to accelerated oxidative stress at the site of physical cell damage. The obtained results are valuable for further development of nanostructured surfaces having contact killing, ROS, and biocide release abilities.The strongly correlated La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) thin films were deposited on the BaTiO3 (BTO) substrates to study the influence of temperature-dependent phase transition of BTO on the magnetic and electric transport properties of the LSMO films. Because of the large lattice mismatch between the LSMO and BTO substrates, the ultrathin LSMO film exhibits semiconducting transport behavior rather than the normal metal-insulator transition behavior. A Mn2+-O2--Mn3+ dominated double exchange interaction, which leads to a semiconducting to metallic transition behavior, was formed by the joint effect of the ion-liquid gating and phase transition of the BTO substrates. To date, however, it is challenging to realize low-cost and simple reconfigurable and multifunctional metasurfaces. In this proposed work, we present a low-cost and simple multifunctional all-passive metasurface that achieves a self-switching characteristic relying on a modulating incident wave without additional supporting devices. As proof-of-principle application examples, we realize a prototype of the proposed all-passive metasurface with an antenna for radome applications, that can achieve self-switching operation between a high directional antenna at the transmitting mode, and radar absorbing structure and reflector at the receiving mode. In this review, we discuss the well-defined role of oxidative stress in melasma and the therapeutic efficacy of various antioxidants for patients suffering from melasma. We focus our discussion on studies investigating the role of vitamin C, azelaic acid, cysteamine, glutathione, carotenoids, and numerous other antioxidants in disorders of hyperpigmentation.
