In recent years different liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) techniques coupled with a variety of analytical equipment have been developed for the determination of both organic and inorganic analytes. OBJECTIVE Over the past few years, the number of research papers in this field has shown a markedly growing tendency. Therefore, the purpose of this review paper is to summarise and critically evaluate research articles focused on the application of LPME techniques for the analysis of plant and herbal samples. RESULTS Due to the complex nature of the samples, the direct application of LPME techniques to the analysis of plants has not often been done. LPME techniques as well as their modalities have been commonly applied in combination with other pretreatment techniques, including a solid-liquid extraction technique supported by mechanical agitation or auxiliary energies for plant analysis. Applications and the most important parameters are summarised in the tables. CONCLUSION This review summarises the application of the LPME procedure and shows the major benefits of LPME, such as the low volume of solvents used, high enrichment factor, simplicity of operation and wide selection of applicable detection techniques. We can expect further development of microextraction analytical methods that focus on direct sample analysis with the application of green extraction solvents while fully automating procedures for the analysis of plant materials. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.BACKGROUND The 5-factor modified frailty index(mFI-5) is a new, NSQIP-based, predictive tool for mortality and postoperative complications. The mFI-5's predictive ability has been validated within the large-scale NSQIP database but applicability in institutional databases has not been investigated. We sought to assess the association between the mFI-5 and morbidity/mortality at the institutional level. METHODS A divisional database was queried for 2017 elective colorectal resections and an mFI-5 calculated. The main outcome measure was the association and predictive value of the mFI-5 with major morbidity/mortality and minor complications. Univariable analyses were performed via the Cochran-Armitage Test and Cramer's V. Logistic regression evaluated the relationship between the mFI-5 and morbidity/mortality while accounting for demographics and pre-operative risk factors. ROC curves were plotted to visualize the predictive strength for outcomes. RESULTS 412 patients were analyzed. 8.7% had major morbidity/mortality and 31.6% minor complications. The mFI-5 categorized patients into 0(n=335), 1(n=58), and 2+(n=19) groups. Univariable analysis showed a higher mFI-5 was associated significantly with major morbidity/mortality(p=0.004), but not minor(p=0.281). Multivariable logistic regression showed a strong association between an mFI-5 score of 2+ with major complications (Major OR=4.616, CI(1.442-14.776), p=0.010). ROC Curves showed the mFI-5 was poor for predicting outcomes and performed better when other risk factors were added to the model. CONCLUSION The mFI-5 tool has an independent association with major morbidity/mortality in an institutional dataset for elective colorectal surgery, but is not predictive. Its predictive ability is enhanced when other patient-specific risk factors are incorporated. This article is protected by copyright. Depending on the selecting pressures, sessile organisms may phenotypically adjust the morphology of each module or modify their density, increasing individual fitness. Here we used the marine bryozoan Schizoporella errata (Cheilostomata, Schizoporellidae) to test how the divergent conditions between two artificial habitats, the location inside a marina (IM) and the external wall of the breakwater (BW), affect colony size and the density of the distinct modules. The density of avicularia and ovicells, modules related to defense and reproduction, respectively, did not differ between habitats. However, colonies growing in the turbulent waters of BW were, in general, larger and had higher density of feeding autozooids than those at IM. Reciprocal transplants of bryozoan clones indicated that trait variation is genotype-dependent but varies according to the environmental conditions at the assigned location. The occurrence of larger colonies with more zooids in BW is probably linked to the easier feeding opportunity offered by the small diffusive boundary layer around the colony at this location. Since in colonial polymorphic organisms each module (zooid) performs a specific function, the phenotypic response is not uniform across colonies, affecting only those modules that are susceptible to variations in the main selective pressures. Understanding the importance of colony-level plasticity is relevant to predict how modularity will contribute to organisms to deal with human-induced environmental changes in coastal habitats. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.I wrote this as a narrative piece for school, but it is a very honest description of how I'm feeling at this time. I just wanted to reassure people that I am ok. For anyone else who is feeling the same as I am, it's ok. I think it is good for us to be honest about how we are feeling, and it is perfectly reasonable for us to feel confusion during this time. I also think it is good for us to not let any anxiety overwhelm us. So let it out. Talk to someone. Write it down. And breathe. For me, watching the sunrise this morning was a good way to focus on something other than the chaos, other than my feelings. © 2020 Paediatrics and Child Health Division (The Royal Australasian College of Physicians).Understanding the catalysis of oxidative reactions by TAML activators of peroxides, i. e. iron(III) complexes of tetraamide macrocyclic ligands, advocated a spectrophotometric procedure for quantifying the catalytic activity of TAMLs for colorless targets (kII ', M-1 s-1 ), which is incomparably more advantageous in terms of time, cost, energy, and ecology than NMR, HPLC, UPLC, GC-MS and other similar techniques. Dyes Orange II or Safranin O (S) are catalytically bleached by non-excessive amount of H2 O2 in the presence of colorless substrates (S1 ) according to the rate law -d[S]/dt=kI kII [H2 O2 ][S][TAML]/(kI [H2 O2 ]+kII [S]+kII '[S1 ]). The bleaching rate is thus a descending hyperbolic function of S1 v=ab/(b+[S1 ]). Values of kII ' found from a and b for phenol and propranolol with commonly used TAML [FeIII o,o'-C6 H4 (NCONMe2 CO)2 CMe2 2 (OH2 )]+ are consistent with those for S1 (phenol, propranolol) obtained directly by UPLC. The study sends vital messages to enzymologists and environmentalists. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.KRAS mutation is frequently seen in a subtype of ovarian cancer categorized as type 1. The KRAS-MAPK pathway, which is closely involved in type 1 cancer progression, is under the regulation of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs). selleck chemical AXL, one of the RTKs, has been reported to be overexpressed in ovarian cancer and contributes to the poor prognosis. However, there is no useful target-based agent against such gene profiles. We examined the combined effect of the dual RAF/MEK inhibitor CH5126766 and AXL inhibitor R428 on the growth of ovarian cancer HEY-T30 and OVCAR-5 cell lines, both of which bear KRAS mutation and express AXL at a high level, using the WST-8 assay and the colony formation assay. The synergistic effect of the combination was evaluated by the combination index. The apoptotic cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. The expression of apoptotic proteins and the phosphorylation of MAPK and AKT pathway proteins were investigated by Western blotting. We found that CH5126766 and R428 suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK and AKT, respectively, and their combination synergistically inhibited the growth of both cell lines with enhancement of apoptosis accompanied by the Bim up-regulation. Combined treatment with CH5126766 and R428 is expected as the novel therapeutic option for KRAS-mutated ovarian cancer with high expression of AXL. This article is protected by copyright. METHODS A total of 28 Arab-Australians aged 35-64 years participated in one of five focus groups conducted in Western Sydney during 2017-2018, a culturally diverse region in New South Wales, Australia. Focus group duration ranged from 35-90 minutes with 4-7 participants in each group. Focus group data were recorded and transcribed verbatim and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS Participants had a general understanding of PA and the associated health benefits. Fewer participants were aware of the independent health effects associated with prolonged sitting. A lack of time and motivation due to work, familial duties, domestic roles, and lack of effort reportedly influenced PA participation. Health was perceived to be both a barrier and an enabler to PA. Barriers related to health included pain and existing conditions and enablers included preventive and reactive measures. Social support and accessibility, such as a lack of support networks, the availability of services, and costs were also discussed. Cultural and religious influences, such as traditional gender roles and the importance of gender-exclusive settings, were also important factors influencing the PA behaviours of participants. CONCLUSIONS This study highlighted the factors that influence the PA levels and sedentary behaviour of Arab-Australian adults aged 35-64 years. SO WHAT? The findings of this study could help inform the design and development of culturally-tailored PA interventions for Arab-Australian adults. This article is protected by copyright. Anal fistulae are classified according to their anatomic relation to the anal sphincter. The internal opening lies at the dentate line submucosal - runs under the anoderm or the rectal mucosa; intersphincteric - crosses the internal sphincter and reaches the skin; transsphincteric - crosses both sphincters; and suprasphincteric extend above the entire sphincter complex.
