Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are part of our immune system and widely studied in recent years. Many linear AMPs have been studied, but their cyclization was shown to enhance the peptide's activity. We have used cyclic peptides (CPs) of an even number of alternating D- and L-α-amino acids, an emerging class of potential AMPs. These CPs can adopt a flat-ring shape that can stack into an antiparallel structure, forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds between different units, creating a tubular β-sheet structure - self-assembled cyclic peptide nanotubes (SCPNs). To get the structural information on peptides in solution and/or in contact with membranes, Amide I and II absorptions are used as they can adopt frequency and shape band characteristics that are influenced by the strength of existing hydrogen bonds between the amide CO and NH involved in secondary structures such as helix, β-sheet or aperiodic structures. The combination of polarized lens with ATR-FTIR provides an important tool to study the orientation of peptides when interacting with lipid membranes as the information can be derived on the position relative to the membrane normal. This work shows how ATR-FTIR used together with polarized light was successfully used to characterize structurally two CPs (RSKSWPgKQ and RSKSWXC10KQ) in solution and upon interaction with negatively charged membranes of DMPG, assessing the formation and orientation of tubular structures (SCPNs) that were shown to be enhanced by the presence of the lipid membrane.This study is aimed at evaluating the probiotic potential of three Enterococcus faecium strains (called 29-P2, 168-P6 and 277-S3) isolated from 'pastırma', a Turkish traditional dry-cured meat product. For this, key probiotic properties and some functional characteristics of strains were tested in vitro. Antimicrobial activity of 3 E. faecium strains was evaluated against 18 indicator microorganisms consisting of 13 foodborne pathogens and 5 lactic acid bacteria and all strains were found as the producer of antimicrobial substance. Especially one strain 168-P6 showed a remarkable activity spectrum and inhibited all of the used foodborne pathogen indicators. Antimicrobial compounds produced by strains were identified by determining the effect of enzyme, pH and temperature on antimicrobial activity. All strains exhibited tolerance to acidic conditions and a simulated gastric environment. Also, strains exhibited high adhesion capacity. The safety of the strains was assessed by determining hemolytic activity and the resistance to 14 different antibiotics. None of the three strains exhibited hemolytic activity, also strains were found reliable in terms of clinically relevant antibiotics, only one strain 29-P2 was found resistant to vancomycin. In addition, metabolic activities of strains including lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, exopolysaccharide production and proteolytic activity were determined and amounts of all metabolic products were found low. When evaluated all data obtained, it is believed that the strains have enviable characteristics as a probiotic candidate.Treatment with intravenous bisphosphonate (BP) in children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) started in Sweden in 1991. No human studies on the role of BP therapy in development of disturbances in tooth mineralization or tooth morphology have been published. The study cohort comprised 219 individuals who were divided into four groups group 1, BP treatment onset before 2 years of age (n = 22); group 2, BP treatment onset between 2 and 6 years of age (n = 20); group 3, BP treatment onset between 6 and 10 years of age (n = 13); and a control group of patients with OI who had not received BP therapy (n = 164). The chi-square test was used in between-group comparisons of the prevalence of tooth agenesis. The prevalence of tooth agenesis was significantly higher in children who began BP treatment before the age of 2 years (group 1; 59%,) compared to the controls (10%; p  less then  0.001) and to children who had begun BP therapy between ages 2 and 6 years (group 2; 10%; p = 0.009) or between ages 6 and 10 years (group 3; 8%; p = 0.003). Different types of disturbances in the enamel formation were seen in 52 premolars, where 51 were seen in those who began BP treatment before the age of 2 years. To conclude, starting BP treatment before the age of 2 years increases the risk of abnormalities in tooth formation manifesting as morphological aberrations, tooth agenesis, and enamel defects.The hepatotoxic impacts of 2, 4, and 8 mg/L of Al2O3 nanoparticles (31.4 ± 4.8 nm) were evaluated in Oreochromis niloticus after 7 days of exposure and 15 days of recovery periods. The biochemical analysis of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase in plasma showed significant increases in both 4 and 8 mg/L Al2O3 NPs exposed groups. The histology of the liver, spleen, kidney, and gills of the fish were analyzed and compared between treatments. Our results showed that the exposed fish developed lesions associated with degenerative and necrotic changes. The highest frequency of damage and DTC scores were observed in the liver and kidney from 96 h to 9-days post-exposure. Generalized additive models of location, scale, and shape, showed that the DTC was strongly associated with crude oil compounds such as napthalene, Cd, Ni, Pb, and bile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites. Our findings suggest that exposure to crude oil affects fish health, producing irreversible histological damage.The current study was designed to determine the concentrations of toxic metals (Ni, Pb and Cr) in feathers of birds collected from four regions of NE Pakistan. Feather samples of birds (House Crow, Common Myna and House Sparrow) were collected from different areas. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to determine the concentration of metals in feathers. Analysis of the data revealed that concentrations of Pb and Cr were significantly different (p  0.05) was detected among bird species (house crow, common myna and house sparrow) for Ni. A significant difference was found for the concentration of Pb and Ni in all the four studied regions. Whereas, non-significant difference was found in all the studied regions for the concentrating of Cr. It was revealed that there is significant rising concentration of metals (Pb, Cr) in feathers of birds in Azad Kashmir.In this work, reduced graphene oxide/double-walled carbon nanotubes/octahedral-Fe3O4/chitosan composite material modified screen-printed gold electrodes (rGO/DWCNTs/Oct-Fe3O4/Cs/SPAuE) under inhibition of urease enzyme was developed for the determination of glyphosate (GLY). The electrochemical behaviors of GLY on these electrodes were evaluated by square wave voltammetry (SWV). With the electroactive surface area is 1.7 times higher than that of bare SPAuE, the rGO/DWCNTs/Oct-Fe3O4/Cs/SPAuE for detection of GLY shows a low detection limit (LOD) of ~ 0.08 ppb in a large concentration range of 0.1-1000 ppb. Moreover, it is also successfully applied to the determination of GLY in river water samples with recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) from 98.7% to 106.9% and from 0.79% to 0.87%, respectively. The developed composite will probably provide an universal electrochemical sensing platform that is very promising for environmental monitoring.
To analyze the application of a lung ultrasound (LUS)-based diagnostic approach to patients suspected of COVID-19, combining the LUS likelihood of COVID-19 pneumonia with patient's symptoms and clinical history.

This is an international multicenter observational study in 20 US and European hospitals. Patients suspected of COVID-19 were tested with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) swab test and had an LUS examination. We identified three clinical phenotypes based on pre-existing chronic diseases (mixed phenotype), and on the presence (severe phenotype) or absence (mild phenotype) of signs and/or symptoms of respiratory failure at presentation. We defined the LUS likelihood of COVID-19 pneumonia according to four different patterns high (HighLUS), intermediate (IntLUS), alternative (AltLUS), and low (LowLUS) probability. The combination of patterns and phenotypes with RT-PCR results was described and analyzed.

To establish a radiomics nomogram based on relaxation maps for predicting the extramural venous invasion (EMVI) of rectal cancer (RC) and compare the diagnostic efficacy of the nomogram and subjective assessment by radiologists.

Among 94 RC patients receiving direct surgical resection, 65 were randomly allocated to the training cohort and 29 to the validation cohort. Radiomics features were extracted from synthetic magnetic resonance imaging including T1, T2, and proton density (PD) maps. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator methods were used for dimension reduction, feature selection, and radiomics model building. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used for nomogram development. The performance of the nomogram was assessed with respect to its calibration, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, and decision curve analysis.

The radiomics model demonstrated good predictive efficacy for EMVI, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of 0.912 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.837-0.986), 0.824, and 0.875 in the training cohort and 0.877 (95% CI 0.751-1.000), 0.833, and 0.826 in the validation cohort. The nomogram had good diagnostic performance, with AUCs of 0.925 (95% CI 0.862-0.988) and 0.899 (95% CI 0.782-1.000) in the training and validation cohort. Furthermore, the radiomics signature showed better diagnostic efficiency than the subjective assessment by both readers (AUC =0.912 vs. 0.732 and 0.763, P = 0.023 and 0.028, respectively).

A radiomics nomogram was developed to preoperatively predict EMVI in RC patients. The application of the radiomics model based on relaxation maps could improve the diagnostic efficacy of EMVI.
