Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) producer selection is a key step in mixed culture (MC) production. This study focused on incompatibility between PHA storage and floc settling of MCs in the selection process. In a selector using fermented waste activated sludge as substrate under varying organic loading, average maximum PHA content obtained in batch assays increased by ∼ 22 wt% and biomass concentration increased by ∼ 34% with the increasing of organic loading. However, poor floc settling occurred, causing decreased batch PHA production and costly downstream process. A flank community which can corporately use non-VFA organics existed in the selector. When organic loading increased, PHA producers had stronger negative interactions, but not cooperation with the flank community members. Thus, high PHA storage of MCs was bounded to the domination of core PHA producer. But the domination of Thauera bacteria under high organic loading indirectly induced a bloom of filamentous bacteria.Starch-rich by-products could be efficiently exploited for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) production. Unfortunately, Cupriavidus necator DSM 545, one of the most efficient PHAs producers, is not able to grow on starch. In this study, a recombinant amylolytic strain of C. necator DSM 545 was developed for the one-step PHAs production from starchy residues, such as broken rice and purple sweet potato waste. The glucodextranase G1d from Arthrobacter globiformis I42 and the α-amylase amyZ from Zunongwangia profunda SM-A87 were co-expressed into C. necator DSM 545. The recombinant C. necator DSM 545 #11, selected for its promising hydrolytic activity, produced high biomass levels with noteworthy PHAs titers 5.78 and 3.65 g/L from broken rice and purple sweet potato waste, respectively. This is the first report on the engineering of C. necator DSM 545 for efficient amylase production and paves the way to the one-step conversion of starchy waste into PHAs.

To identify risk factors associated with outbreak severity to inform current outbreak management and future pandemic preparedness planning efforts.

A retrospective cohort study design was used to evaluate the association between non-modifiable factors (facility building, organization level, and resident population characteristics), modifiable factors (measured through an assessment tool for infection prevention and control (IPC) and pandemic preparedness), and severity of COVID-19 outbreaks (attack rate) in LTCFs.

Atrazine (ATZ) is a globally used herbicide used to control weeds, but it suffers from poor aqueous solubility, poor efficacy, and environmental loss. Herein, we report a novel, eco-friendly and biocompatible clove oil-based nanoemulsion as a green nanocarrier to enhance the solubility, bioavailability, and control release of ATZ. Food grade surfactants, Tween 80 and Phosphatidylcholine (PC) were used to formulate clove oil nanoemulsion with size less then 200 nm using ultrasonic emulsification technique, without any use of organic solvent. The ATZ encapsulation efficiency in NEm was greater than 95%. DLS confirms the nanosize (106 nm) and monodispersity of NEm. HRTEM reveals the spherical morphology of the nanodroplets. FTIR and DSC confirm the successful incorporation of ATZ inside the NEm oil droplet core. ATZ loaded NEm showed excellent thermal and storage stability, low Ostwald ripening rate, slow and sustained herbicide release behavior, which is of vital importance for an herbicide formulation. The release rate was better than commercial ATZ and free ATZ formulations. Results from herbicidal activity assays demonstrate that ATZ NEm exhibited excellent herbicidal activity even at low concentrations as compared to commercial ATZ analogs. In consideration of biocompatible excipients, free of organic solvent, and a simple fabrication process, ATZ loaded clove oil NEm can hold great potential in weed control and sustainable agri-food applications.The effects of air pollution on adolescents need further consideration. Although there is evidence that maternal exposure to air pollution may affect the cognitive function of offspring, relevant studies remain limited and inconsistent, with a lack of studies assessing the causal effects and evidence from developing countries. Using data from Chinese Family Panel Studies, a representative Chinese nationwide cohort study, OLS combined with instrumental variable + two-stage least square (IV+2SLS) was used to explore the causal effects of exposure to PM2.5 concentrations during pregnancy on the cognitive function of offspring when they become adolescents. After detailed argumentation and multiple testing, Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) and Surface Pressure (SP) were selected as the instrumental variables for this study. One thousand five hundred fifty-five adolescents participated in this study, with a mean age of 13.3 years (sd = 2.3). There were 706 females (45.4%), the mean maternal PM2.5 exposure concentration was 64.9 μg/m3, and recorded a mean cognitive function score of 38.1 (sd = 9.4). The OLS results found that maternal exposure to air pollution increased cognitive function in offspring adolescents, corroborating the presence of endogeneity. Multi-domain knowledge, the results of the weak instrumental variable assessments of F-tests (F = 237 > 10) and Stock-yogo tests (minimum eigenvalue statistic = 153.16 > 16.38), and the results of the Hansen J overidentification test (p > 0.05) verified the plausibility and validity of the instrumental variables. The IV+2SLS results, following causal modeling, showed that PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy impairs the cognitive ability of offspring adolescents (β = -0.040, p less then 0.05). Robustness tests also validated the results. This study aims to evaluate the geographical distribution and 10-year temporal trends (2009-2018) of 17 PFAS in eggs of two gull species (Larus michahellis and Larus audouinii) from 5 main Spanish colonies. ∑PFAS ranged from 13.7 ± 5.9 to 164 ± 17 ng g-1 wet weight and higher concentrations were observed in L. audouinii than in L. michahellis. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the predominant compound in all samples, followed by perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) and perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTriDA). Perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFNA) were also found in all studied areas but at lower concentrations, while perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was only detected in the Medes Islands. Principal Component Analysis revealed the co-occurrence of the 6 detected PFAS, and differentiated samples from Ebro Delta and Medes Islands, both located in the North-Eastern Mediterranean Sea, with high contribution of all PFAS, from Chafarinas and Atlantic Islands with lower concentration levels and variability. Also, different patterns were observed among colonies, suggesting the fish-based diet plays an important role in PFAS bioaccumulation. In all colonies, except for the Medes Islands, ∑PFAS decreased through the 10-year study period, with PFOS, PFUnA, and PFTriDA showing a significant concentration reduction in a colony-specific manner. This study demonstrates the usefulness and importance of continuous systematic long-term monitoring to determine the geographical distribution and temporal variations of PFAS in marine protected areas using gull eggs as bioindicators of environmental pollution.
To prospectively evaluate an L1 regularized iterative SENSE reconstruction (L1-R SENSE) to eliminate band-like artifacts frequently seen with parallel imaging (SENSE) at high acceleration factors in high resolution diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the pancreas.

Fourteen patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) underwent respiratory triggered DWI ss-EPI at a resolution of 2.5×2.5×3mm3 with uniform undersampling in the phase encoding direction (AP axis) with an acceleration factor of 4. Data were reconstructed using the standard SENSE reconstruction routine of the vendor and an iterative SENSE reconstruction employing L1 regularization after a wavelet sparsifying transformation (L1-R SENSE). Retrospective reconstruction of the data with a lower number of averages was performed using both reconstruction methods. Two radiologists independently assessed noise artifacts, anatomical details and image quality (IQ) subjectively with a 4-point scale. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and covariance (CV) of ADC estimated from images reconstructed at a different number of averages for PDAC and the normal pancreas were assessed.
