Study Design and Methods A total of 1,000 women diagnosed as PCOS by modified Rotterdam criteria were enrolled in 27 hospitals across China in a randomized controlled trial. Anthropometric, metabolic parameters, sex hormone, and lipid levels were measured at the baseline visit. Dyslipidemia was defined according to total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) level. Independent t-test and logistic regression were used to identify predictors for dyslipidemia. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated. Results A total of 41.3% of the women had dyslipidemia, and the prevalence of abnormal TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, and TG were 8.6, 9.1, 26.9, and 17.5%, respectively. Logistic regression found that age, waist circumference, insulin, follicle-stimulating hormone, and sex hormone-binding globulin were independent predictors for dyslipidemia. When combining these predictors, the AUC was 0.744. The cut-off points were age >28.5 years, waist circumference >86.5 cm, insulin >96.0 pmol/L, follicle-stimulating hormone less then 5.6 mIU/mL, and sex hormone-binding hormone less then 31.0 nmol/L, respectively. Conclusion Dyslipidemia was common in Chinese women with PCOS, and low HDL-C level was the predominant lipid abnormality. Age, waist circumference, follicle-stimulating hormone, insulin and sex hormone-binding globulin were predictive for dyslipidemia among Chinese women with PCOS.Background Ambulatory overnight oximetry (OXI) has emerged as a cost-effective initial test for sleep disordered breathing. Obesity is closely associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); however, whether body mass index (BMI) or waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) predicts abnormal overnight OXI remains unknown. Methods We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of 393 men seen in the Executive Health Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota who underwent ambulatory overnight OXI ordered by preventive medicine physicians between January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2010. We compared participant/spouse-reported symptoms (sleepiness, snoring), physician indications for OXI (obesity, fatigue), Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores, anthropomorphic measurements (WHR, BMI), and comorbid medical conditions (hypertension, diabetes) with OXI results. Results 295 of the 393 men who completed OXI had abnormal results. During multivariate analysis, the strongest independent predictor of abnormal OXI for men was WHR (≥1.0, OR = 5.59) followed by BMI (≥30.0 kg/m2, OR = 2.75), age (≥55 yrs, OR = 2.06), and the presence of snoring (OR = 1.91, P less then 0.05 for all). This study sought to advance our understanding on the association of plasma PLP with risk of CHD, with particular attention paid to sex differences and effect modifiers. Methods We conducted a hospital-based, case-control study on suspected CHD patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography. A total of 429 CHD cases and 429 controls matched by age, sex, and operation time were included in the final analysis. Plasma PLP was assessed using LC-MS. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between plasma PLP and a first CHD event. Results The mean (SD) plasma PLP levels were 8.4 (6.3) in male cases and 9.0 (11.0) in female cases, and 9.5 (8.5) in male controls and 12.5 (12.9) in female controls. Each 1 ng/mL increment in log2PLP was associated with a 28% lower risk of CHD in overall population. When stratified by sex, plasma PLP was significantly and independently associated with CHD in women (OR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.50-0.80), but not in men (OR = 0.86, 95% CI 0.67-1.09). The association of plasma PLP with CHD risk was modified by sex (adjusted P interaction = 0.022). Conclusions We found a significant, inverse linear association between plasma PLP and CHD in Chinese women, but not in men. Methods We examined self-reported optimism and CVH using harmonized data from two U.S. cohorts Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and Jackson Heart Study (JHS). Modified Poisson regression models were used to estimate the relationship between optimism and CVH using LS7 among MESA participants (N = 3,520) and to examine the relationship of interest based on four biological LS7 metrics (body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose) among JHS and MESA participants (N = 5,541). In this review, we summarize the main findings concerning the cellular mechanisms proposed for the establishment of COVID-19-associated thrombosis.Background Risk factors for driveline infection (DLI) in patients with left ventricular assist devices are multifactorial. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between mechanical driveline features and DLI occurrence. Methods A meta-analysis was conducted that included studies reporting DLI rates at 6 months after implantation of any of three contemporary devices (HVAD with Pellethane or Carbothane driveline, HeartMate II, and HeartMate 3). Further, outer driveline diameter measurements and ex-vivo experimental three-point bending and torsion tests were performed to compare the stiffness of the four different driveline types. Results 21 studies with 5,393 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The mean weighted DLI rates ranged from 7.2% (HeartMate II) to 11.9% (HeartMate 3). The HeartMate II driveline had a significantly lower maximal bending force (Loadmax) (4.52 ± 0.19 N) compared to the Carbothane HVAD (8.50 ± 0.08 N), the HeartMate 3 (11.08 ± 0.3 N), and the Pellethane HVAD driveline (15.55 ± 0.14 N) (p less then 0.001). The maximal torque (Torquemax) of the HeartMate II [41.44 (12.61) mNm] and the Carbothane HVAD driveline [46.06 (3.78) mNm] were significantly lower than Torquemax of the Pellethane HVAD [46.06 (3.78) mNm] and the HeartMate 3 [95.63 (26.60) mNm] driveline (p less then 0.001). The driveline of the HeartMate 3 had the largest outer diameter [6.60 (0.58) mm]. A relationship between the mean weighted DLI rate and mechanical driveline features (Torquemax) was found, as the the HeartMate II driveline had the lowest Torquemax and lowest DLI rate, whereas the HeartMate 3 driveline had the highest Torquemax and highest DLI rate. Conclusions Device-specific mechanical driveline features are an additional modifiable risk factor for DLI and may influence clinical outcomes of LVAD patients.
