Such a collaborative approach is required across stakeholders in order to develop innovative management guidelines, underpinned by necessary and evidence-based policy change recommendations, which, will ensure the best patient care until a cure is discovered.Aim This study aimed to examine the co-morbidity and temporal relationship between substance abuse disorders (SUDs) and gambling disorder (GD). Method Cross-tabulated census data were retrieved from the Norwegian Patient Registry. The data included the number of patients by year of first-time incidence of GD and/or SUD diagnoses, age and sex from 2008 to 2017. Results Approximately 22.5% of GD patients were also diagnosed with SUD, whereas 0.7% of SUD patients were also diagnosed with GD. Among GD patients, males had a greater risk of SUD in the same year compared to females, whereas the risk of SUD a year or more after the onset of GD was greater among females compared to males. Among SUD patients, males had a greater risk of GD in all age categories and across all time periods except among those aged 40-66 years. The risk of GD three to four years after the onset of SUD among those aged 40-66 years was similar between SUD males and females. Discussion The overall co-morbidity of SUD and GD was low. However, the risk of the other addictive disorder was contingent upon the nature of the first disorder. The risk of SUD among GDs over time was greater among females compared to males. Conclusions The risk of the other addictive disorder appears to be contingent upon the first addictive disorder. There are sex differences in the risk trajectories of the other addictive disorder over time between GD patients and SUD patients. We present the case of a patient with a brachio-basilic graft forearm loop with intractable edema and thrombosed central veins. She showed up with an important edema after some effort and a previously thrombosed pseudoaneurysm with significant growth. She refused angioplasty treatment for central veins, the graft had not been used for dialysis during the last year, so that arteriovenous graft (AVG) ligation was considered. Decitabine cost Due to local conditions thrombin percutaneous embolization was performed to avoid possible complications of a conventional surgery approach. AVG occlusion was done in 10 min by fluoroscopy and ultrasound guidance. In 24 h the patient was significantly better and after 1 week she had no edema at all. There were no complications and no recanalization was observed after 3 months. Percutaneous thrombin embolization is a safe and effective technique for AVG occlusion in case of intractable arm edema with central vein thrombosis, and most likely to be considered in other situations where arteriovenous graft or fistula ligature is needed.Green nanotechnology stands amongst the leading giants of innovation for the twenty first century technological advances. More interesting, is the use of natural products as reducing agents. These could be recyclable materials from fruits and vegetables to produce nanoparticles (NPs) with novel properties. In the current study, silver NPs (AgNPs) were synthesized using the water extracts from the peel and flesh of two Pyrus communis L. cultivars, namely, the Forelle (Red) Pears (RPE) and Packham Triumph (Green) Pears (GPE). The AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR). The antibacterial activities of the AgNPs were evaluated using agar well diffusion and microdilution assays. The cytotoxicity of the AgNPs was investigated on a rat macrophage (RAW 264.7) cells using MTT assay. Both the RPE and GPE were capable of synthesizing the AgNPs at high temperatures (70 and 100 °C). The AgNPs exhibited antibacterial activity against the test strains, and also had low toxicity towards the RAW 264.7 cells. Thus, the synthesized AgNPs have a potentially viable use in bio-applications for treatment of bacterial infections. The aim of this study is to determine the nutritional status, anthropometric measurements and quality of life of adult patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy, and to evaluate their interactions. In this retrospective cross sectional study, information about the patients' demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, nutritional status, hand grip strengths which were measured with a portable digital hand dynamometer, and the quality of life scores were obtained from the patient files. According to NRS-2002, 16.3% of the patients were at the risk of malnutrition. The body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, mid-upper arm circumference, hand grip strength values of the individuals who had three or higher scores from NRS-2002 were significantly lower (p less then 0.05). Considering the evaluation of the quality of life scores based on their nutritional status, the functional and general health score was significantly lower in patients at the risk of malnutrition and their symptom score was significantly higher (p less then 0.05). The presence of nutritional risk in cancer patients is related to the quality of life. In conclusion, the nutritional status of patients with cancer should be evaluated regularly, and early intervention regarding this is important to increase the quality of life.Neurodegenerative disorders occur when nerve cells in the brain or peripheral nervous system partial or complete fail in their functions and sometimes even die due to some injuries or aging. Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD), have been majorly resulted due to degeneration of neurons and neuroinflammation progressively. There are many similarities that correlates both AD and PD on a cellular and sub-cellular level. Therefore, a hope for therapeutic advancement for simultaneous upgradation in both the diseases are directly depending on the discovery of common mechanism at molecular and cellular level. Recent and past evidences from scientific literature supporting the efficacy of plants flavonoids in treatment and protection of both AD and PD. Further, dietary flavones, specially Heptamethoxyflavone, Kaempferitrin, Vitexin and Amentoflavone gains recently much more attention for producing many health beneficiary effects including neuroprotection. Despite of these evidence a detailed updated overview of neuroprotective effects against both AD and PD by Heptamethoxyflavone, Kaempferitrin, Vitexin and Amentoflavone are still missing. In this context several published studies were assessed by using various online electronic search engines/databases to meet the objective from 1981 to 2021 (Approx. 224). Therefore, present review was designed to deliver the detailed description on these flavones including therapeutic benefits in AD, PD and other CNS complications with critical analysis on underlying mechanisms. One new diarylpentanone, 4(S)-hydroxy-1, 5-diphenyl -2(E)-en-1-pentanone (1), two diarylpentanones isolated from Wikstroemia indica for the first time (3 and 5) and two other known diarylpentanones were isolated from petroleum ether fraction of root of Wikstroemia indica. The structure of the new compound including absolute configuration was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic techniques, including 1D, 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS and ECD spectroscopy. All isolated compounds were tested for their cytotoxic activity against cancer-derived cell lines A549. Compound 5 exhibited remarkable cytotoxic activity comparable to that of positive control cisplatin. Most current larynx cancer therapies are generally aimed at the global mass of tumor, targeting the non-tumorigenic cells, and unfortunately sparing the tumorigenic cancer stem cells (CSCs) that are responsible for sustained growth, metastasis, and chemo- and radioresistance. Phytochemicals and herbs have recently been introduced as therapeutic sources for eliminating CSCs. Therefore, we assessed the anti-tumor effects of two herbal ingredients, the green tea extract "Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)" and Honokiol (HNK), on parental cells or CD44high CSCs of the human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cell line HEp-2. Results revealed that EGCG had a preeminent apoptotic potential on HEp-2 laryngeal CSCs. HNK conferred higher cytotoxic impacts on parental cells mostly by necrosis induction, especially with higher doses, but apoptosis induction with lower doses was also observed. The Notch signaling pathway genes were more potently suppressed by EGCG than HNK. However, HNK surpassed EGCG in downregulating the β-catenin and the Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathways genes. On a genetic basis, both agents engaged the BCL-2 family-regulated and caspase-dependent intrinsic apoptotic pathway, but EGCG and HNK triggered apoptosis via p53-independent and p53-dependent pathways, respectively. Taken together, EGCG and HNK eradicated HEp-2 human larynx cancer cells through targeting multiple self-renewal pathways and activating diverse cell death modalities. Background An ongoing longitudinal study in six European sites includes a 3-monthly assessment of forced vital capacity (FVC), slow vital capacity (SVC), peak cough flow (PCF), and Sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP). The aim of this interim analysis was to assess the potential for SNIP to be a surrogate for aerosol generating procedures given COVID-19 related restrictions. Methods This was a prospective observational study. Patients attending six study sites with King's Stage 2 or 3 ALS completed baseline FVC/SVC/SNIP/PCF and repeated assessments 3 monthly. Data were collected from March 2018 to March 2020, after which a COVID-19 related study suspension was imposed. Correlations between the measures were calculated. A Bayesian multiple outcomes random-effects model was constructed to investigate rates of decline across measures. Results In total, 270 cases and 828 assessments were included (Mean age 65.2 ± 15.4 years; 32.6% Female; 60% Kings stage 2; 81.1% spinal onset). FVC and SVC were the most closely correlated outcomes (0.95). SNIP showed the least correlation with other metrics 0.53 (FVC), 0.54 (SVC), 0.60 (PCF). All four measures significantly declined over time. SNIP in the bulbar onset group showed the fastest rate of decline. Discussion SNIP was not well correlated with FVC and SVC, probably because it examines a different aspect of respiratory function. Respiratory measures declined over time, but differentially according to the site of onset. SNIP is not a surrogate for FVC and SVC, but is a complementary measure, declining linearly and differentiating spinal and bulbar onset patients. Background In old age, many people experience a period of functional decline and require long-term care. Sweden has a universal largely tax-financed health and social care system that is used by all societal groups. However, few studies have investigated if educational groups use publicly paid long-term care equitably. The aim of this study was to explore educational differences in the use of long-term care, including both home care and institutional care, during the last two years of life in Sweden. Methods We used linked register data on mortality and long-term care use, including all adults aged ⩾67 years who died in Sweden in November 2015 (N=6329). We used zero-inflated negative binomial regression models to analyse the number of months with long-term care by educational level, both crude and adjusted for age at death and cohabitation status. Men and women were analysed separately. Results People with tertiary education died more commonly without using any long-term care compared to primary educated people (28.
