This paper proposes a robust and real-time capable algorithm for classification of the firstand second heart sounds. The classification algorithm is based on the evaluation of the envelope curveof the phonocardiogram. For the evaluation, in contrast to other studies, measurements on twelveprobands were conducted in different physiological conditions. Moreover, for each measurement theauscultation point, posture and physical stress were varied. The proposed envelope-based algorithmis tested with two different methods for envelope curve extraction the Hilbert transform andthe short-time Fourier transform. The performance of the classification of the first heart soundsis evaluated by using a reference electrocardiogram. Overall, by using the Hilbert transform, the algorithm has a better performance regarding the F1-score and computational effort. Theproposed algorithm achieves for the S1 classification an F1-score up to 95.7% and in average 90.5 %.The algorithm is robust against the age, BMI, posture, heart rate and auscultation point (exceptmeasurements on the back) of the subjects. The ECG and PCG records are available from the authors. This work constitutes a basic study about the first exploration on the preparation of biohybrids based on the corn protein zein and layered metal hydroxides, such as layered double hydroxides (LDH) and layered single hydroxides (LSHs). For this purpose, MgAl layered double hydroxide and the Co2(OH)3 layered single hydroxide were selected as hosts, and various synthetic approaches were explored to achieve the formation of the zein-layered hydroxide biohybrids, profiting from the presence of negatively charged groups in zein in basic medium. EGFR inhibitor drugs Zein-based layered hydroxide biohybrids were characterized by diverse physicochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), solid state 13C cross-polarization magical angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CP-MAS NMR), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), etc., which suggest that the different synthesis procedures employed and the anion located in the interlayer region of the inorganic host material seem to have a strong influence on the final features of the biohybrids, resulting in mixed, single intercalated, or highly exfoliated intercalated phases. Thus, the resulting biohybrids based on zein and layered hydroxides could have interest in applications in biomedicine, biosensing, materials for electronic devices, catalysis, and photocatalysis. The incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which is one of the most common cancers worldwide, has been increasing. Serum anti-p53 autoantibody is one of the most sensitive biomarkers for OSCC. Currently, the most commonly used method on clinical screening platforms is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, owing to its high specificity and repeatability. However, conducting immunoassays on 96-well plates is typically time consuming, thereby limiting its clinical applications for fast diagnosis and immediate prognosis of rapidly progressive diseases. The present study performed immunoassays in glass capillaries of 1-mm internal diameter, which increases the surface to volume ratio of the reaction, to shorten the time needed for immunoassay. The immunoassay was automated while using linear motorized stages and a syringe pump. The results indicated that, when compared with the 96-well plate immunoassay, the glass capillary immunoassay decreased the reaction time from typical 120 min to 45 min, reduced the amount of reagent from typical 50 µL to 15 µL, and required only simple equipment setup. Moreover, the limit of detection for glass capillary anti-p53 autoantibody immunoassay was 0.46 ng mL-1, which is close to the 0.19 ng mL-1 value of the conventional 96-well plate assay, and the glass capillary method had a broader detection range. The apparatus was used to detect the serum anti-p53 autoantibody concentration in clinical patients and compare its results with the conventional 96-well plate method results, which suggested that both of the methods detect the same trend in the relative concentration of serum anti-p53 autoantibody in healthy individuals or patients with OSCC.Dictyostelium discoideum is gaining increasing attention as a model organism for the study of calcium binding and calmodulin function in basic biological events as well as human diseases. After a short overview of calcium-binding proteins, the structure of Dictyostelium calmodulin and the conformational changes effected by calcium ion binding to its four EF hands are compared to its human counterpart, emphasizing the highly conserved nature of this central regulatory protein. The calcium-dependent and -independent motifs involved in calmodulin binding to target proteins are discussed with examples of the diversity of calmodulin binding proteins that have been studied in this amoebozoan. The methods used to identify and characterize calmodulin binding proteins is covered followed by the ways Dictyostelium is currently being used as a system to study several neurodegenerative diseases and how it could serve as a model for studying calmodulinopathies such as those associated with specific types of heart arrythmia. Because of its rapid developmental cycles, its genetic tractability, and a richly endowed stock center, Dictyostelium is in a position to become a leader in the field of calmodulin research.Anthocyanin contributes to the coloration of pear fruit and enhances plant defenses. Members of the ethylene response factor (ERF) family play vital roles in hormone and stress signaling and are involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis. Here, PbERF22 was identified from the lanolin-induced red fruit of 'Zaosu' pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.) using a comparative transcriptome analysis. Its expression level was up- and down-regulated by methyl jasmonate and 1-methylcyclopropene plus lanolin treatments, respectively, which indicated that PbERF22 responded to the jasmonate- and ethylene-signaling pathways. In addition, transiently overexpressed PbERF22 induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in 'Zaosu' fruit, and a quantitative PCR analysis further confirmed that PbERF22 facilitated the expression of anthocyanin biosynthetic structural and regulatory genes. Moreover, a dual luciferase assay showed that PbERF22 enhanced the activation effects of PbMYB10 and PbMYB10b on the PbUFGT promoter. Therefore, PbERF22 responses to jasmonate and ethylene signals and regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis.
