The use of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic became ubiquitous. Such masks are believed to be effective in prevention of respiratory viral transmission.

The study was undertaken to assess the use of face masks among students during the COVID-19 pandemic, with focus on similarities and differences between medical and non-medical students.

The study was based on the specially designed survey. The questionnaire, after consultation with 10 students, was created using Google Forms and posted on numerous Facebook groups for students in Poland. The recall period of the questionnaire was the previous 7 days. In 48 h, 2,315 answers were obtained. Fifty-nine questionnaires were excluded due to data incompleteness and failure to fulfil inclusion criteria. Therefore, 2,256 surveys (97.5%) were considered for final analysis.

Medical students showed significantly different attitudes and practices concerning the use of face masks. Medical students used face masks more commonly and for longer periods of time. Moreover, they wore single-use masks more often and less frequently re-used them. Also, multiple use of single-use face masks and masks decontamination procedures were less common among medical students.

We suggest that medical students might be of help in educational campaigns for general public on proper use of face protection.

It may manifest in any age group, though adults aged 20-50 are the group most often affected. It causes 5-10% of visual impairment worldwide. The epidemiology of some specific uveitis diseases varies worldwide, because they are influenced by genetic, environmental and socioeconomic factors. It can occur only in the eye or as a symptom of a systemic condition. The most common cause of NIU is HLA-B-27-associated anterior uveitis (4-32%). The standard treatment for NIU is a local, topical and systemic steroid therapy in combination with immunomodulatory therapy. However, recently, a new drug - adalimumab, which is a tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) inhibitor - was approved by FDA in the treatment of NIU and is increasingly used to treat various conditions. Adalimumab has been proven in many studies to be safe and effective in the treatment of NIU associated with diverse systemic diseases.
Co-processing starch with clay nanocomposite has been shown to yield a new class of materials, potentially with better properties than pristine starch, that could be used as directly compressible excipients in tablet formulations.

In this study, starches from 3 botanical sources, i.e., millet starch from Pennistum glaucum (L) RBr grains, sorghum starch from Sorghum bicolor L. Moench grains and cocoyam starch from Colocasia esculenta L. Schott tubers, were co-processed with montmorillonite clay (MMT) and evaluated as a directly compressible excipient in tramadol tablet formulations. The effects of different starch-to-clay ratios on the material and drug release properties of the resulting tablets were evaluated.

The starch-clay composites were prepared by heating a dispersion of the starch in distilled water, then precipitating the dispersion with an equal volume of 95% ethanol. The starch-clay composites were characterized and used as direct compression excipients for the preparation of tramadol tablets. The mechanical and drug release properties of the tablets were evaluated.

Co-processing MMT with the starches yielded starch-clay composites with different material and tablet properties than the pristine starches. #link# The co-processed starch-MMT biocomposites exhibited improved flowability and compressibility over the pristine starches. The mechanical and drug release properties of tramadol tablets containing starch-clay composites were significantly better than those containing only pristine starches. The properties of the starch-clay composites were not related to the botanical source of the starches.

Executive function (EF) and, in particular, inhibitory control have been associated with weight loss (WL) in behavioural WL treatment for obesity. Few studies have focused on the relationship between preoperative inhibitory control and post-operative WL following bariatric surgery, and the potential mediating role of maladaptive eating behaviours is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate preoperative executive function as a predictor of WL at 1 year following bariatric surgery. Additionally, we aimed to explore the mediating role of postoperative compulsive grazing in the relationship between inhibitory control and WL.

A prospective observational study in which participants completed neuropsychological testing 30 days before and 1 year following surgery (n = 61/80; 76% follow-up). Participants were 80% female, with an average age of 41 years. Approximately 54% underwent gastric bypass, 26% gastric sleeve and 20% had one anastomosis gastric bypass. Regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship between preoperative EF and percentage total weight loss (%TWL), and structural equation modelling was used to examine compulsive grazing as a mediator.

After adjusting for control variables, preoperative inhibitory control explained 8% of the variance in %TWL (p ≤ 0.05). link2 Preoperative working memory was not significantly associated with %TWL. Postoperative compulsive grazing was significantly associated with %TWL (p ≤ 0.05), but did not mediate the association between preoperative inhibitory control and %TWL.

The results suggest that preoperative inhibitory control performance is a relevant predictor of postoperative WL and that compulsive grazing is a maladaptive eating behaviour that warrants clinical attention after surgery.

Sleep disturbances are associated with increased risk of migraine, however the extent of shared underlying biology and the direction of causal relationships between these traits is unclear. Delineating causality between sleep patterns and migraine may offer new pathophysiologic insights and inform subsequent intervention studies. link3 Here, we used genetic approaches to test for shared genetic influences between sleep patterns and migraine, and to test whether habitual sleep patterns may be causal risk factors for migraine and vice versa.

To quantify genetic overlap, we performed genome-wide genetic correlation analyses using genome-wide association studies of nine sleep traits in the UK Biobank (n≥237,627), and migraine from the International Headache Genetics Consortium (59,674 cases and 316,078 controls). We then tested for potential causal effects between sleep traits and migraine using bidirectional, two-sample Mendelian randomization.

We focus on essential metabolic pathways, environmental signaling mechanisms, detoxification pathways, behavioral risk factors, and biological hazards that may disrupt orofacial development.POLE mutations, which lead to an ultramutated phenotype in colorectal cancer (CRC), have been reported as a promising marker in immunotherapy. We performed sequencing of CRC cases in Zhejiang University (ZJU) and extracted obtainable data from recently published results, including The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Japanese studies and clinical trials, to present clinical patterns of POLE driver-mutated CRC and reveal its heterogeneity. The rate of somatic POLE driver mutations has been reported as 2.60% (ZJU cohort), 1.50% (TCGA cohort), 1.00% (Japan cohort), and 1.00% (Lancet cohort). POLE driver mutations show a clearly increased mutation burden (mean TMB 217.98 mut/Mb in ZJU; 203.13 mut/Mb in TCGA). Based on pooled data, more than 70.00% of patients with POLE driver mutations were diagnosed before they were 55 years old and at an early disease stage (Stage 0-II >70.00%), and more than 70.00% were male. Among Asian patients, 68.40% developed POLE driver mutations in the left-side colon, whereas 64.00% of non-Asian patients developed them in the right-side colon (p less then 0.01). Passive immunization with an RSV-neutralizing antibody can provide rapid protection to this vulnerable population. Proof-of-concept for this approach has been demonstrated by palivizumab; however, the use of this antibody is generally restricted to the highest-risk infants due to monthly dosing requirements and its cost. To address the large unmet medical need for most infants, we are evaluating MK-1654, a fully human RSV-neutralizing antibody with half-life extending mutations targeting site IV of the fusion protein. In this 2-part, placebo-controlled, double-blind, first-in-human study, 152 healthy adults were randomized 31 to receive a single dose of MK-1654 or placebo in 5 cohorts (100 or 300 mg as an intramuscular dose or 300, 1000, or 3000 mg as an intravenous dose). Safety, pharmacokinetics, antidrug antibodies, and RSV serum-neutralizing antibody titers were evaluated through 1 year. MK-1654 serum concentrations increased proportionally with dose and resulted in corresponding elevations in RSV serum-neutralizing antibody titers. The antibody displayed a half-life of 73 to 88 days and an estimated bioavailability of 69% at the 300-mg dose. read more of MK-1654 was similar to placebo, and treatment-emergent antidrug antibodies were low (2.6%) with no associated adverse events. However, confocal endomicroscopic images are formed by point-by-point scanning in both lateral and axial directions, which results in long image acquisition time. Here, an endomicroscope with telecentric configuration is presented to achieve nonmechanical and rapid axial scanning for volumetric fluorescence imaging. In our system, optical sectioning in wide-field fashion is obtained through HiLo imaging with a digital micromirror device. Axial scanning, without mechanical moving parts, is conducted by digital focus adjustment using an electrically tunable lens, offering constant magnification and contrast. We demonstrate imaging performance of our system with optically sectioned images using fluorescently labeled beads, as well as ex vivo mice cardiac tissue samples. Our system provides multiple advantages, in terms of improved scanning range, and reduced image acquisition time, which shows great potentials for three-dimensional biopsies of volumetric biological samples.
