Nicotine recruits glutamate receptors in order to postsynaptic sites.
After the operation, the patient had improved strength and was able to walk independently 8 months postoperatively. Establishment of stability via C1-C2 fusion is challenging in patients with genetic disorders characterized by skeletal dysplasia because of these young patients' small bone size and deficient bone quality. In this unique case, the treatment consisted solely of C1-C2 fusion with a free-hand technique. This case report presents a new approach in the treatment of atlantoaxial instability in Morquio syndrome.Tourniquet syndrome is a rare condition where a tourniquet applied to an appendage leads to an obstructed blood flow and subsequent ischemic injury. read more Meningomyelocele and meningocele are common birth defects, and involvement of meningocele in tourniquet syndrome is never mentioned in the literature. We managed a 10-day-old male child presenting with infected lumber meningocele with a tourniquet tied at its base. It is being presented with review of relevant literature. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between intercultural sensitivity and religious orientation among nurses. This study utilized a cross-sectional model. It was conducted in a public hospital in a city located in the eastern part of Turkey between July and September 2018. The participants were 105 nurses who volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected using the Socio-Demographic Characteristics Form, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, and the Religious Orientation Scale. The Intercultural Sensitivity Scale mean score of the participating nurses was found 82.55 ± 9.82, and the total mean score for the Religious Orientation Scale was 53.34 ± 7.56. A significant, positive relationship was found between the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale and the Religious Orientation Scale mean scores (p  less then  .01). It is recommended that the study should be conducted with the participation of nurses from different cultures and religion, in larger groups and in a comparative manner. The priority aim of this study is to investigate the effect of carbon footprint, which is an indicator of environmental degradation, on health expenditures for the USA. In the study, cointegration analysis was performed for the period 1970-2016 by using health expenditures, carbon footprint, gross domestic product per capita and life expectancy at birth variables. According to the results of standard cointegration analysis, only cointegration relationship between health expenditures and income was found. In the models with carbon footprint, no cointegration relationship was discovered between the original values of the variables. This result was approached with suspicion, and it was thought that there might be a hidden cointegration between healthcare expenditures and carbon footprint. For this purpose, the hidden cointegration analysis and crouching error correction model proposed by Granger and Yoon [18] were employed among the positive and negative components of the variables of healthcare expenditures and carbon footprint. The results of the hidden cointegration analysis revealed that there was a hidden cointegration relationship between the positive components of healthcare expenditures and the positive components of carbon footprint. Analysis results show that a 1% increase in carbon footprint will cause a 2.04% increase in healthcare expenditures in the long term in the USA. When the positive components of the variables were considered, it was concluded that there was a one-way long-term asymmetric causality relationship between carbon footprint and healthcare expenditures. As a result of the study, it was proposed that the carbon footprint should be diminished to prevent the increasing burden of the healthcare expenditures on the budget.INTRODUCTION Assessment for cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) remains difficult in everyday clinical practice. We sought to examine the diagnostic utility of various simple tools for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in the detection of CAN in type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS We examined 153 type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects by various DPN tools (vibration perception threshold, 10 g Semmes-Weinstein monofilament, Ipswich touch test, NC-stat®/DPNCheck, neuropathy disability score) for the detection of CAN. CAN was diagnosed by the standardised cardiovascular autonomic reflex function tests. RESULTS For the diagnosis of CAN, assessment of small nerve fibre function (pinprick sensation, temperature perception) yielded a very high negative predictive value (97%), with high sensitivity (89%) and moderate specificity (73%). The vibration perception threshold was second in diagnostic utility (91% negative predictive value, 62% sensitivity and 75% specificity). CONCLUSIONS Based on their high negative predictive value, simple tools for DPN may prove useful to exclude CAN in type 2 diabetes mellitus. These encouraging results merit further evaluation to enable wider screening for CAN.So far, six species of Oxeoschistus Butler, including its junior synonym Dioriste Thieme, were listed from Central America, with five of them from Costa Rica alone, which appears to represent the highest regional diversity of this Neotropical montane butterfly genus. Our research based on field work, morphological studies and barcode analysis proved that one record is a misunderstanding perpetuated in scientific literature for over a century Oxeoschistus cothonides Grose-Smith is identified here as an individual form of the female of O. cothon Salvin. The presence of Oxeoschistus tauropolis (Westwood) in Costa Rica, subject to some controversy, is confirmed, and a new local subspecies is described from Costa Rica, O. tauropolis mitsuko Pyrcz & Nakamura n. ssp. Specific status of O. euriphyle Butler is reinstated based on morphological and molecular data. A new subspecies O. hilara lempira Pyrcz n. ssp. is described from Honduras. O. puerta submaculatus Butler is reported for the first time from the Darién region on the Panama-Colombia border. Species relationships are preliminarily evaluated based on COI data concluding, among others, that O. hilara and O. euriphyle are less closely related than previously assumed. Altitudinal and distributional data are revised, and ecological and behavioural information of all the species of Central American Oxeoschistus is provided.
