The novel developed membrane has shown a good efficiency in terms of properties and features, as a membrane suitable for membrane distillation (MD); a high porosity (84.4% ± 0.6), hydrophobic surface (136.39° ± 3.1 static water contact angle), and a water vapor permeability of around 4.37 × 10-5 g·m/m2·day·Pa were obtained. The prepared membrane can be compared to the MD membranes commercially available in terms of properties and economic value.Trypanosomatids are the causative agents of leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis, which affect about 20 million people in the world's poorest countries, leading to 95,000 deaths per year. They are often associated with malnutrition, weak immune systems, low quality housing, and population migration. They are generally recognized as neglected tropical diseases. New drugs against these parasitic protozoa are urgently needed to counteract drug resistance, toxicity, and the high cost of commercially available drugs. Microbial bioprospecting for new molecules may play a crucial role in developing a new generation of antiparasitic drugs. This article reviews the current state of the available literature on chemically defined metabolites of microbial origin that have demonstrated antitrypanosomatid activity. In this review, bacterial and fungal metabolites are presented; they originate from a range of microorganisms, including cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, and filamentous fungi. We hope to provide a useful overview for future research to identify hits that may become the lead compounds needed to accelerate the discovery of new drugs against trypanosomatids.Objective It is estimated that twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) occurs in 10-15% of monochorionic twin pregnancies. One of the fetuses takes on the role of donor and the other of recipient. The treatment administered involves serial amnioreduction and laser photocoagulation of the communicating blood vessels. After TTTS, children may have deficiencies in psychomotor functioning, in particular in cognitive functions, expressive language, and motor skills. Methods The cognitive functioning of twins in the late childhood period was compared using the following tools an analysis of their medical history, an interview with their parents, and neuropsychological tests allowing the evaluation of their whole profile of cognitive functions. Case Study Cognitive functioning in the late childhood period was analyzed in a pair of 11-year-old male twins (juvenile athletes), a donor and a recipient, who had developed TTTS syndrome in the prenatal period. Results Comparison of the cognitive functioning profile of the donor and recipient revealed that children with a history of TTTS develop normally in terms of cognitive and motor functioning in late childhood. A comparative analysis of the donor and recipient was more favorable for the recipient, who had a higher level of general intelligence, visual-motor memory, and semantic fluency. Conclusions The fact that both the donor and the recipient chose to pursue athletics suggests that gross motor skills are their strongest suit. Playing sports as a method of rehabilitation of cognitive function of children born prematurely after TTTS could contribute to the improvement of cognitive functioning.Although early screening tests are beneficial for the detection and treatment of cancers, many people have failed to participate in screening tests. The present study aims to explore the theoretical underpinning of low participation in screening programs using the method of meta-analytic structural equation modeling. It was found that the health belief model is the most adopted theoretical framework. Moreover, the intended uptake of screening was positively predicted only by cues to action, health literacy, and perceived susceptibility. As a result, a health intention model, including the three significant variables, is proposed. The practical implications of the findings are that health communication campaigns should focus on enlightening and engaging the public through all necessary means to raise awareness and transfer knowledge in relation to screening procedures as well as cancers per se.In this paper, the characterization and analysis of a silicon micromachined Quad Mass Gyroscope (QMG) in the rate mode of operation are presented. We report on trade-offs between full-scale, linearity, and noise characteristics of QMGs with different Q-factors. Allan Deviation (ADEV) and Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis methods were used to evaluate the performance results. The devices in this study were instrumented for the rate mode of operation, with the Open-Loop (OL) and Force-to-Rebalance (FRB) configurations of the sense mode. For each method of instrumentation, we presented constraints on selection of control parameters with respect to the Q-factor of the devices. For the high Q-factor device of over 2 million, and uncompensated frequency asymmetry of 60 mHz, we demonstrated bias instability of 0.095∘/hr and Angle Random Walk (ARW) of 0.0107∘/hr in the OL mode of operation and bias instability of 0.065∘/hr and ARW of 0.0058∘/hr in the FRB mode of operation. We concluded that in a realistic MEMS gyroscope with imperfections (nearly matched, but non-zero frequency asymmetry), a higher Q-factor would increase the frequency stability of the drive axis resulting in an improved noise performance, but has challenges in implementation of digital control loops.RNA-mediated pathways form an important regulatory layer of myriad biological processes. In fact, several proofs-of-concept have been made in this scope. Furthermore, a novel research field regarding extracellular RNAs and RNA-based intercellular/interorganismal communication is booming. In this article, we review key discoveries concerning extracellular RNAs in insects, insect RNA-based cell-to-cell communication, and plant-insect transfer of RNA. In addition, we overview the molecular mechanisms implicated in this form of communication and discuss future biotechnological prospects, namely from the insect pest-control perspective.
