Our study provides new insights into mycorrhizal associations of epiphytic orchids.Organic matter (OM) and enzymes activity can act as indicators of the time and level of soil contamination with heavy metal. The goal of this study is evaluation of the effect of chronic long-term soil contamination with Cu on OM and biological activity in Spolic Technosols. The monitoring plot is located in the zone of industrial wastewater storage and sludge reservoirs in the Seversky Donets River flood plain. The total amount of Cu in the investigated soils varied greatly from 52 to 437 mg/kg. The results of Cu sequential fractionation the contaminated soil have shown that the chemical fraction composition of metal changed when the soil contamination level increased. The amount of Cu compounds associated with OM and Fe and Mn oxides was also higher. Fractions of OM from the humic and fulvic acids groups were studied. Soil was subjected to extraction with cold and hot water, and the content of water-soluble OM (WSOM) was determined. An increased solubility of humic and fulvic acids as well as elevated content of cold and hot extraction WSOM was established. The cold-extracted amount of WSOM increased with an enhance in the Cu content. The long-term contamination of soil with Cu leads to an adaptation of microorganisms to this adverse environmental factor, and this adaptation is manifested in the WSOM content increase. The effect of Cu contamination on microbiological activity was assessed by plate-counting culturable microorganisms and determining urease and dehydrogenase enzymatic activity. A high level of soil contamination with Cu showed a noticeable negative effect on the number of soil bacteria; however, active and potentially active bacteria were observed even in the highly contaminated soils. The changes in soil OM and microbial communities caused by Cu pollution can lead to disruption of ecosystem functioning.Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Due to limited genomic resources and its highly repetitive genome, limited studies were conducted to investigate the genomic landscape of the region near sex-determining loci. In this study, we screened the structure variations (SVs) between Y-linked contigs and a 1.78-Mb X scaffold (Super_scaffold 66), which enabled the development of 12 sex co-segregating DNA markers. These markers were tested in one F1 mapping population and 40 spinach accessions, which comprised 692 individual plants with the strong sex linkage pattern. In addition, we found that Super_scaffold 66 was highly repetitive along with the enriched LTR-RTs insertions and decreased microsatellite distribution compared with the rest genome, which matches extremely low gene density featured by only nine annotated genes. Synteny analysis between Y contigs and Superscaffold_66 revealed a 340-Kb accumulative Y contig (non-continuous) and a 500-Kb X counterpart along with SVs and wide-spread tandem duplications. Among the nine genes, one ABC transporter gene revealed noticeable SVs between Y contig and X counterpart, as an approximate 5-Kb recent Gypsy LTR-RT insertion in the Y-linked allele, but not the X allele. The gene paucity, SVs, and sex-linked polymorphisms attributed to the recombination suppression. We proposed that Super_scaffold 66 is part of the non-recombining region containing the sex determination genes. The spread of 12 sex co-segregating markers from this 1.78 Mb genomic region indicated the existence and expansion of sex determination region during progression of the Y chromosome.To analyse the prevalence of dysphagia perception and associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in Pelotas, Brazil. A total of 1447 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 and older participated in a cross-sectional population-based study carried out in 2014. Dysphagia perception was assessed using the following question "Do you have swallowing difficulties? (Yes/No)". Independent variables included sociodemographic, behavioural and health characteristics. Poisson regression was used to obtain prevalence ratios. Dysphagia perception prevalence was 8.1%, higher among women (PR 1.63, 95% CI 1.07; 2.46) and in subjects older than 80 years (PR 1.88, 95% CI 1.16; 3.03). Older adults with 1-7 years of schooling were more likely to present dysphagia (PR 1.62; 95% CI 1.09; 2.40). Those who did not use dental prosthesis (PR 1.85; 95% CI 1.08; 3.16), who presented dry mouth sensation (PR 4.10; 95% CI 2.59; 6.51) and multimorbidity (PR 30.0; 95% CI 4.09; 219.45) were more likely to present dysphagia perception. The participants who consumed alcohol were 60% less likely to report dysphagia perception (PR 0.43; 95% CI 0.22; 0.86). One out of twelve older adults presented dysphagia perception, and associations with sociodemographic characteristics and other health problems were found. Early identification of dysphagia should be a public health and clinical concern.Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-released vesicles acting as transporters of proteins, lipids and short/long non-coding RNA (miRNAs and lncRNAs). They are released by normal and pathological cells, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To date, studies focused on miRNAs and lncRNAs contained in EVs derived from HCC are limited. Our aim was to analyze the transcriptional profile of potential regulating miRNAs and lncRNAs in EVs secreted by HCC tumor cell line (HepG2, n = 6), and from a non-tumorigenic hepatocyte cell line (WRL68, n = 6), to compare their differential expression profile and to identify novel molecular diagnostic markers of HCC. EVs were isolated from the conditioned medium, through differential centrifugations. The expression profile of miRNAs (miR-23a, miR-16-2, miR-181a, miR-373, miR-205, miR-27a, miR-1323, and miR-532) and lncRNAs (HULC, HOTAIR, XIST, MALAT-1, GAS-5, H19) was performed in Real-time PCR, and their transcript was found both in HepG2 and WRL68 EVs. Lower miR-181a, miR-205 and miR-1323 expression were detected in EVs secreted by HepG2 compared to WRL68, while an opposite trend was observed for miR-23a, miR-16-2, miR-373, miR-27a, and miR-532. Several significant correlations were found between miRNA and lncRNA. An in silico analysis was also performed. The results obtained could identified them as new potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of HCC.
This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional associations of sedentary time and physical activity time with bone density in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The isotemporal substitution (IS) modeling was used to estimate the beneficial effects of behavioral changes (e.g., replacing sedentary time with physical activity time) on bone density in these patients.
A total of 92 patients with CKD (age 65 ± 9years; estimated glomerular filtration rate 57 ± 22mL/min/1.73m
) were included in this cross-sectional study. The times spent in sedentary behavior (SB), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) were assessed using a triaxial accelerometer. Through quantitative ultrasound measurements, the stiffness index, as a measure of bone density, was calculated using the speed of sound and broadband ultrasound attenuation.
In multivariate analyses, the stiffness index was beneficially associated with the MVPA time (β = 0.748), but was not significantly associated with the SB and LPA times. The IS models showed that replacing 10min/day of SB with the equivalent LPA time was not significantly associated with the stiffness index; however, replacing 10min/day of SB with the equivalent MVPA time was beneficially associated with the stiffness index (β = 0.804).
These results suggest that a small increase in MVPA time (e.g., 10min/day) may attenuate the decline in bone density in patients with CKD. Our findings may provide insight for the development of novel strategies for improving bone health in patients with CKD.

The 30,043-nucleotide (nt) genome has the typical organization of Atadenovirus genus members. The sequence shares over 99% nt sequence identity with two Japanese BAdV-7 sequences, followed by 74.9% nt sequence identity with the ovine adenovirus 7 strain OAV287, a member of the species Ovine atadenovirus D. SD18-74 was amplified in both bovine and ovine primary nasal turbinate cells, demonstrating greater fitness in bovine cells. The genomic and biological characteristics of BAdV-7 SD18-74 support the inclusion of the members of the BAdV-7 group in a new species in the genus Atadenovirus.β-galactoside α-2,3-sialyltransferase 2 (ST3GAL2) is a member of the sialyltransferase family that mediates terminal modification of glycoproteins and glycolipids. ST3GAL2 has been found to play a role in obesity, aging, and malignant diseases. In this study, we cloned porcine ST3GAL2 (pST3GAL2) from porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs), and its role in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection was investigated by transcriptome analysis. pST3GAL2 was found to be located in the Golgi apparatus, and it was expressed at high levels in PRRSV-infected PAMs. Overexpression of pST3GAL2 resulted in a slight increase in PRRSV proliferation, and the interaction between pST3GAL2 and GP2a of PRRSV was detected by coimmunoprecipitation and confocal microscopy. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-18, IL-1β and TNF-α) was significantly inhibited in pST3GAL2-overexpressing, PRRSV-infected cells and upregulated in PRRSV-infected pST3GAL2-knockout cells, while the pattern of expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10) was diametrically opposite.
