In line with our previous results, this Tl behavior can be inferred from systematic Mn-oxide degradation and the associated Tl (enriched in 205Tl) cycling in the studied soils and thus, presumably in the redoximorphic soils in general.Occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) can cause cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity. In this study, we established a liver injury model in rats via intraperitoneal injection of potassium dichromate (0, 2, 4, and 6 mg/kg body weight) for 35 d to investigate the mechanism of Cr(VI)-induced liver injury. We found that Cr(VI) induced hepatic histopathological lesions, oxidative stress, and apoptosis and reduced the expression of mitochondrial-related regulatory factors such as adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, Cr(VI) promoted mitochondrial division and inhibited fusion, leading to increased expression of caspase-3 and production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. Our study demonstrates that long-term exposure to Cr(VI) induces mitochondrial dynamics disorder by inhibiting AMPK/PGC-1α signaling pathway in rat liver.The usages of antibiotics in treating the pathogenic infections could alter the gut microbiome and associated resistome, causing long term adverse impact on human health. In this study, mice were treated with human-simulated regimen 25.0 mg kg-1 of amoxicillin for seven days, and their gut microbiota and resistome were characterized using the 16S rRNA amplicons sequencing and the high-throughput qPCR, respectively. Meanwhile, the flora restorations after individual applications of inulin, Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum), and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) were analyzed for up to 35 days. The results revealed the prolonged negative impact of single course AMX exposure on mice gut microbiota and resistome. To be specific, pathobionts of Klebsiella and Escherichia-Shigella were significantly enriched, while prebiotics of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus were dramatically depleted. Furthermore, β-lactam resistance genes and efflux resistance genes were obviously enriched after amoxicillin exposure. Compared to B. longum, FMT and inulin were demonstrated to preferably restore the gut microbiota via reconstituting microbial community and stimulating specific prebiotic respectively. Such variation of microbiome caused their distinct alleviations on resistome alteration. Inulin earned the greatest elimination on AMX induced ARG abundance and diversity enrichment. FMT and B. longum caused remove of particular ARGs such as ndm-1, blaPER. Network analysis revealed that most of the ARGs were prone to be harbored by Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. In general, gut resistome shift was partly associated with the changing bacterial community structures and transposase and integron. Taken together, these results demonstrated the profound disruption of gut microbiota and resistome after single-course amoxicillin treatment and different restoration by inulin, B. longum and FMT.This research aimed to improve our understanding of how owners' beliefs and behaviour are associated with obesity in companion dogs. To do this, we employed new theoretical frameworks and integrated previously reported measures to curate a collection of brief, user-friendly self-report measures to assess owner factors. The reliability and validity of these was examined in two phases of empirical research, each with a cross-sectional questionnaire design that also examined the validity of assessing body condition score (BCS) from photographs submitted by owners. Phase 1 (n = 47 dog owners from France) found that the brief owner-report measures correlated with the long-form measures (all correlations except one exceeded r = 0.70). BCS as coded from photographs were highly correlated with a vet's assessment of the same dogs (r = 0.67). Phase 2 (n = 3339 dog owners from France, Germany, the UK, Italy, and Russia) investigated which measures are associated with obesity among companion dogs. Perceptions of the dog's vulnerability to the threat of obesity, perceived weight status, perceived costs associated with ownership, normative beliefs about feeding, social support from friends, and being in the precontemplation stage of change predicted BCS alongside demographic factors (e.g., dog's age, neutered status). Taken together, the findings provide a method for assessing a wide range of factors that may be associated with obesity among companion dogs and point to potential targets for interventions designed to reduce obesity.Antibiotic dry cow therapy (DCT) is an important part of most mastitis control programs. Updating DCT recommendations is an ongoing topic due to the global problem of antimicrobial resistance. Finland, along with other Nordic countries, has implemented selective DCT for decades. Our study analyzed Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) information from 241 Finnish farmers who participated in a survey about their drying-off practices. The aim was to evaluate herd-level associations between milk somatic cell count (SCC), milk production, and various antimicrobial DCT approaches both cross-sectionally in 2016 and longitudinally in 2012-2016. The three DCT approaches in the study were selective, blanket, and no DCT use. An additional aim was to evaluate whether dynamic changes occurred in herd-average SCC and annual milk production over five years, and whether these potential changes differed between different DCT approaches. The method for the longitudinal analyses was growth modeling with random coefficient models. Differences in SCC and milk production between farms with different DCT approaches were minor. Regardless of the farm's DCT approach, annual milk production increased over the years, while average SCC was reasonably constant. The variability in SCC and milk production across all DCT groups was low between years, and most of the variability was between farms. Compared to other milking systems, farms with automatic milking system (AMS) had higher SCC, and in 2016 higher milk production. The results of this study suggest that it is possible to maintain low herd-average SCC and good milk production when using selective DCT and following the guidelines for prudent antimicrobial use. Average SCC and milk production varied across the herds, suggesting that advice on DCT practices should be herd-specific. The methodology of growth modeling using random coefficient models was applicable in analyzing longitudinal data, in which the time frame was relatively short and the number of herds was limited.This paper reviews experiences with participatory epidemiology (PE) and focuses in pastoralist areas of Africa where much of the early development and institutionalization of PE occurred. The paper discusses the importance of context when designing PE activities and framing study questions, and uses the example of changing livelihoods in pastoralist areas, and marked wealth and gender differences within communities. By reference to a recently proposed definition of PE that includes community empowerment, the paper describes the marked socio-economic and gender differentiation in pastoralist communities. In these contexts, questions of "disease control for who?" and "empowerment for who?" arise, as does the need to move beyond the concept of communities as homogenous social and economic units. By reference to the persistent complex emergencies and other humanitarian crises, the paper discusses community participation and how functional participation in programmes and PE can contribute to successful livestock disease control. In contrast, empowering forms of participation are difficult to achieve in humanitarian contexts and might not be needed to achieve effective livestock disease control. In non-humanitarian contexts, and secure countries with stable governments, national control programmes for important transboundary or zoonotic diseases usually require control strategies that can be applied consistently across areas, and with disease policy, funding, coordination and implementation controlled centrally. In contrast, empowerment in PE implies local, community-level decision-making and control of resources. Our secondary goal focused on quantifying specific preoperative risk factors that predispose children to postoperative complications. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 248 patients who underwent adenotonsillectomy at our ENT office from 2006 to 2011. We stratified these patients into two groups under 2 years old; and 2-3 years old. We identified 42 preoperative risk factors and 22 postoperative complications for each age group and conducted tests of statistical significance. Results We found that children under 24 months old had a statistically significant higher postoperative complication rate of 38% compared to 22.3% in children 2-3 years old (p = 0.0320, chi-squared test).
