However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear and no effective therapeutic interventions exist. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that mitochondrial defects are a key feature of diabetes contributing to neurodegenerative events. It has also been demonstrated that the putative tumor suppressor WW domain-containing oxidoreductase 1 (WWOX) can interact with mitochondria in several pathological conditions. However, its role in diabetes-associated neurodegeneration remains unknown. So, this study aimed to evaluate the role of WWOX activation in high glucose-induced neuronal damage and death. Our experiments were mainly performed in differentiated SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells exposed to high glucose and treated (or not) with Zfra1-31, the specific inhibitor of WWOX. Several parameters were analyzed namely cell viability, WWOX activation (tyrosine 33 residue phosphorylation), mitochondrial function, reactive o, the inhibition of WWOX with Zfra1-31 reversed, totally or partially, the alterations promoted by high glucose. Altogether our observations demonstrate that under high glucose conditions WWOX activation contributes to mitochondrial anomalies and neuronal damage and death, which suggests that WWOX is a potential therapeutic target for early interventions. Our findings also support the efficacy of Zfra1-31 in treating hyperglycemia/diabetes-associated neurodegeneration.A hyphenated instrumental method high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-OES) was used for the separation and determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). After the chromatographic separation of chromium species by anion exchange column, their spectrophotometric detection was carried out by ICP-OES system. Important instrumental and chromatographic parameters were investigated via univariate optimization approach to obtain high signal to noise ratio and good resolution for chromium species. Under the optimum HPLC-ICP-OES conditions, limit of detection (LOD) values for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were found to be 0.27 and 0.05 mg/kg, respectively. To understand how drastic changes in environmental conditions affect wood frog tadpoles, we tested five temperature manipulations, including Ambient (water temperatures tracking daily air temperatures), Elevated (+ 3 °C above ambient), Nightly (removal of nightly lows), Spike (+ 6 °C above ambient every third week), and Flux (alternating ambient and + 3 °C weekly) crossed with Low Salt (specific conductivity 109-207 µS-cm) and High Salt (1900-2000 µS-cm). We replicated each of the ten resulting treatments four times. High-salinity conditions produced larger metamorphs than low-salinity conditions. Tadpole survival was reduced only by the Spike treatment (P = 0.017). Elevated temperatures did not shorten larval periods; time to metamorphosis did not differ among temperature treatments (P = 0.328). We retained 135 recently metamorphosed frogs in outdoor terrestrial enclosures for 10 months to investigate larval environment carryover effects. Juvenile frogs grew larger in low-density terrestrial enclosures than high density (P = 0.015) and frogs from Ambient Low Salt larval conditions grew and survived better than frogs from manipulated larval conditions. Frogs from High Salt larval conditions had lower survival than frogs from Low Salt conditions. Paracoccus pantotrophus MA3, a novel isolated strain of heterotrophic nitrification-anaerobic denitrification bacteria, was evaluated for nitrogen removal using formic acid as the sole carbon source. The results showed that the maximum ammonium removal efficiency was observed under the optimum conditions of 26.25 carbon to nitrogen ratio, 3.39% (v/v) inoculation amount, 34.64 °C temperature, and at 180 rpm shaking speed, respectively. In addition, quantitative real-time PCR technique analysis assured that the gene expression level of formate dehydrogenase, formate tetrahydrofolate ligase, 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase, serine hydroxymethyltransferase, respiratory nitrate reductase beta subunit, L-glutamine synthetase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and glutamate synthase were up-regulated compared to the control group, and combined with nitrogen mass balance analysis to conclude that most of the ammonium was removed by assimilation. A small amount of nitrate and nearly no nitrite were accumulated during heterotrophic nitrification. MA3 exhibited significant denitrification potential under anaerobic conditions with a maximum nitrate removal rate of 4.39 mg/L/h, and the only gas produced was N2. The type strain is CAU 1631T (= KCTC 82456T = MCCC 1K06088T).Some long-term outcomes for participants with selective mutism (SM) are elevated rates of phobic disorders, particularly social phobia, persistent communicative problems, and reduced self-esteem. However, data on the long-term outcomes of SM are scarce. In this study, by analyzing interpersonal anxiety, communication skills, and self-esteem among those who experienced SM and felt cured (SM-C-group 30 females, 6 males, mean age 28.0, SD = 7.42, range 19-47 years), those who experienced SM and did not feel cured (SM-NC-group 37 females, 4 males, mean age 27.4, SD = 7.24, age range 19-50 years), and those who had not experienced SM (Non-SM-group 30 females, 30 males, mean age 26.4, SD = 7.62, age range 20-48 years), we examined the long-term outcomes of SM and the factors that influence the feeling of being cured of SM. Results showed that the SM-C-group and SM-NC-groups had significantly higher interpersonal anxiety and significantly lower communication skills than the Non-SM-group. Moreover, the SM-C-group showed significantly lower interpersonal anxiety and significantly higher communication skills than the SM-NC-group. However, while there was no significant difference in self-esteem between the SM-C and SM-NCgroups, there was a significant difference between the SM-NC and Non-SM groups. The SM-C and SM-NC groups did not differ on the retrospective symptom load (SMQ-J), but did on the Current level of difficulty with speaking. The results of the logistic regression analysis predicted that communication skills and self-esteem did not influence the feeling of being cured of SM, but interpersonal anxiety and Current level of difficulty to speak did. However, few studies have assessed the social predictors of paternal AND or their possible associations with maternal mental health. We analysed data from 180 couples participating in the Queensland Family Cohort longitudinal study. Both parents completed surveys measuring mental health, relationship quality, social support, and sleep quality at 24 weeks of pregnancy. Mothers also completed the same surveys 6 weeks' postpartum. Antenatal depression, stress, and anxiety were highest among fathers reporting lower social support and higher sleep impairment. Pregnant women admitted to hospital or presenting to the emergency department (ED) in Western Australia (WA) with a diagnosis of opioid poisoning were identified by linking state midwifery records with hospital and ED administrative data. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared with opioid poisoning that occurred in the 12 months prior to conception or the 12 months following birth. Between 2003 and 2018, 57 neonates were born to women who had experienced opioid poisoning during pregnancy (14.1 per 100,000 births) in WA. The incidence of opioid poisoning in the year prior to pregnancy (IRR 3.04, 95%CI 2.30, 4.02) and the year following pregnancy (IRR 1.96, 95%CI 1.46, 2.64) was significantly higher than during pregnancy. Opioid poisoning during pregnancy was less likely to involve multiple substances and be intentional (rather than accidental).
