The objective of our study was to select potential probiotic strains for the prevention of oral bacterial infections and evaluate their potential probiotic properties in oral cavity. AR113 (Lactobacillus plantarum) and AR340 (Lactobacillus paracasei) with significantly antimicrobial β-hemolytic streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus activity were isolated from Chinese pickle through agar well diffusion assay. Through the analyses of probiotic properties in antibiofilm, lysozyme and hydrogen peroxide tolerance, bacterial surface properties, adherence ability, tooth degradation and anti-inflammatory activity, the AR113 and AR340 showed anti-adhesion activity of 45.2-71.1% and 20.3-56.8% against β-hemolytic streptococci and 15.4-52.6% and 30.7-65.9% against Staphylococcus aureus, respectively, at different concentration. The two strains with high hydrophobicity, autoaggregation and survival rate adhered strongly to FaDu cells. AR113 and AR340 exhibited low calcium released from teeth (0.04 μg/mL and 0.03 μg/mL, respectively). ELISA analysis showed that AR113 and AR340 significantly inhibited the LPS-induced increase of NO and TNF-α expression. Strains-fermented skim milk inhibited the growth of β-hemolytic streptococci or Staphylococcus aureus. AR113 and AR340 were considered as probiotic candidates because of their higher antibacterial activity against some oral pathogenic bacteria, no potential of primitive cariogenicity. These candidates were expected as new probiotics with potential oral health benefits and no harmful effects.The disordered growth of large cities around water bodies causes environmental damage due to discarded plastics and microplastics (MPs) that aquatic organisms can ingest. This study analyzed the occurrence, type, and abundance of MPs in the gastrointestinal contents of four species of commercial fish (120 total specimens), namely, Brazilian mojarra (Eugerres brasilianus) and mullets (Mugil curema, Mugil curvidens, and Mugil liza), obtained in Porto Seguro in Bahia, Brazil, between March and May 2019. A priori probability distributions were generated using a Bayesian approach and simulations to assess MP intake based on varying exposure amounts (θ = 0.2, θ = 0.5, and θ = 0.8). E. brasilianus (53.33%) and Mugil spp. (41.66%) were contaminated with some types of MPs. Black, blue, and green MPs dominated in the extracted samples, and most measured 1.0 mm in length or smaller. The dominant polymers identified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were polyester, polypropylene, semi-synthetic rayon fiber, and polyamide 6 (nylon). The a posteriori probabilities of more than half the E. brasilianus and Mugil spp. ingesting MPs were 0.336 and 0.008, respectively, indicating that E. brasilianus is much more likely to ingest MPs. These simulations can be useful tools for assessing the environmental quality and local anthropic impact of MP ingestion by fish populations.Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the lethal malignancies commonly found in the eastern world, with overall five-year survival rates less than 25%. The present study aimed to investigate the biological function of annexin A3 (ANXA3) in ESCC cell proliferation. The mRNA and protein levels of ANXA3 in ESCC tissues and cell lines were determined by real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively. Lentiviral transduction was applied to overexpress or reduce ANXA3 expression in ESCC cell lines. The effect of ANXA3 on ESCC cell proliferation was evaluated by cell-counting kit-8 assay in vitro and tumor-bearing animal model in vivo. We found that ANXA3 was substantially upregulated in ESCC tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues as well as ESCC cell lines compared to normal esophageal endothelial cells. Suppression of ANXA3 significantly inhibited ESCC cell proliferation in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. We further revealed that NF-κB was involved in ANXA3-mediated ESCC cell proliferation. Our results suggest that ANXA3 acts as an oncogene in ESCC, and targeting ANXA3 or NF-κB may serve as potential therapeutic strategies for patients with ESCC.This paper analyses the relationship between tropospheric ozone levels in rural and urban sites in the Spanish Community of Madrid (CM). The paper makes use of functional data and the Kendall's Tau functional statistic (KFT) to identify significant correlations between areas. The results are based on very detailed data, extracted from hourly records from 33 air-quality stations covering de CM during the period 2011-2018, producing more than 95,500 point observations. The results show a large degree of correlation between distant sites, whereas in a number of cases, they reveal very moderate correlations between adjacent sites. This pattern is suggestive of complex recirculation patterns.This review concentrates on recent developments in ruthenium Schiff bases, whose steric and electronic characteristics can be manipulated easily by selecting suitable condensing aldehydes or ketones and primary amines, and their metal complexes. Ruthenium metal-based complexes and Schiff base ligands are rapidly becoming conventionally considered for biological applications (antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial), in catalysis, in functional materials, in sensors, and as pigments for dyes. Ruthenium complexes exhibit a broad variety of activities concerning simple Schiff base ligands. This may be due to the octahedral bonding of both Ru(II) and Ru(III) complexes, which acquire an extended reservoir of a three-dimensional framework, providing the potential for an elevated degree of site selectivity for binding to their biological targets. This review provides an overview of this field, and intends to highlight both ligand design and synthetic methodology development, as well as significant applications of these metal complexes.
