Separate analyses for each gender yielded that maternal harsh discipline was a significant predictor of wife beating attitudes for girls, but not for boys, whereas paternal harsh discipline was a significant predictor for boys, but not for girls. Furthermore, beliefs regarding female sexuality and moral neutralization of aggression mediated the relationship between religiosity and wife beating attitudes. Policy measures and intervention efforts targeting particularly harsh discipline and sociocultural beliefs are sorely needed to address this issue in Jordanian society.Purpose To describe the clinical characteristics and visual prognosis of ocular involvement in syphilis.Design A retrospective cohort study.Methods We studied the charts of 24 patients who visited our Ophthalmological Centre in Rome, Italy. All patients with serological evidence of syphilitic infection were included.Results Ocular involvement was the first manifestation of syphilitic disease in 96% and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) seropositivity was found in 29% of the cases. The most frequent ocular manifestation was posterior uveitis. Vitreous involvement was frequent. Antineoplastic and I activator Patients with papillitis at onset showed better visual outcome with antisyphilitic treatment. Posterior uveitis at onset and HIV seropositivity were negative prognostic factors for visual outcome. HIV-positive patients showed more severe and frequent bilateral course of ocular involvement in syphilis.Conclusions The ophthalmologist should suspect syphilis in patien ts with uveitis or optic neuropathy associated with high-risk sexual behaviour and/or HIV, or in patients with posterior placoid chorioretinitis, necrotising retinitis, or interstitial keratitis.The universal access to treatment and care for people living with HIV (PLWHIV) is still a major problem, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where 70% of HIV-infected people live. Equally important is the fact that HIV/AIDS-related stigma is recognized to be a major obstacle to successfully control the spread of this disease. We devised a pilot project (titled "My friend with HIV remains a friend") to fight the HIV/AIDS stigmatization through educating secondary school students by openly HIV-positive teachers. In a first step, we have measured the amount and type of stigma felt by the PLWHIV in Buea/Cameroon using the "The people living with HIV Stigma Index" from Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. Gossiping and verbal insults were experienced by 90% of the interviewees, while 9% have experienced physical assaults. Using these data and material from the "Toolkit for action" from the "International Centre for the Research on Women," the teachers educated the students on multiple aspects of HIV/AIDS and stigma. The teaching curriculum included role-plays, picture visualizations, drawing, and other forms of interactions like visits to HIV and AIDS treatment units. Before and after this intervention, the students undertook "True/False" examinations on HIV/AIDS and stigma. We compared these results with results from students from another school, who did not participate in this intervention. We were able to show that the students taking part in the intervention improved by almost 20% points in comparison to the other students. Their results did not change.Background Compared to other patient population groups, the field of amputation research in Canada lacks cohesion largely due to limited funding sources, lack of connection among research scientists, and loose ties among geographically dispersed healthcare centres, research institutes and advocacy groups. As a result, advances in clinical care are hampered and ultimately negatively influence outcomes of persons living with limb loss.Objective To stimulate a national strategy on advancing amputation research in Canada, a consensus-workshop was organized with an expert panel of stakeholders to identify key research priorities and potential strategies to build researcher and funding capacity in the field.Methods A modified Delphi approach was used to gain consensus on identifying and selecting an initial set of priorities for building research capacity in the field of amputation. This included an anonymous pre-meeting survey (N = 31 respondents) followed by an in-person consensus-workshop meeting that hosted 38 olicy decision-making.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONLimb loss is a growing concern across North America, with lower-extremity amputations occurring due to complications arising from diabetes being a major cause.To advance knowledge about limb loss and to improve clinical care for this population, stronger connections are needed across the continuum of care (acute, rehabilitation, community) and across sectors (clinical, advocacy, industry and research).There are new surgical techniques, technologies, and rehabilitation approaches being explored to improve the health, mobility and community participation of people with limb loss, but further research evidence is needed to demonstrate efficacy and to better integrate them into standard clinical care.Aim To understand how people with stroke and carers adapt over time, and how health professionals support transition to home.Method A multi-perspective, prospective, qualitative, longitudinal study was conducted using in-depth semi-structured interviews one and six months after inpatient discharge. Twenty-four participants (eight triads, including people with stroke, carers and health professionals) were included. Thematic and narrative analysis facilitated identification of cross-cutting themes according to individual trajectories post-stroke.Findings A major theme "regaining control of life" suggested a shift in perspective after six months at home. Four sub-themes help to understand the triads' perspectives over time i) importance of team involvement; ii) differences in perceived roles within the triad; iii) differences in expectations and collaboration within the triad and iv) planning a different future. People who were involved in supporting adaptation and rehabilitation processes were reported differenor collective support for the person with stroke and their carers.Ongoing consultation about the desires of the person with stroke about rehabilitation, priorities and goals is important in order to tailor the professional approach to the stage individuals are at with their coping and adjustment post stroke.
