Nickel-based and cobalt-based metal alloys are frequently used in dentistry. The introduction of various elements in the alloy changes its characteristics, and a thorough study of each alloy should be completed to determine its appropriate corrosion resistance and biocompatibility in contact with physiological fluids. There are scarce investigations on these widely used dental alloys in Ringer solution, and findings in this research bring new experimental data and information. The present study evaluated and compared the corrosion behavior of six NiCr- and two CoCr-based dental materials in Ringer solution, using the following techniques potentiostatic polarization curves (chronoamperometry), microstructural analysis, and EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The results obtained in this investigation showed that in the NiCr-based specimens Ni4, Ni5, and Ni6 the stability of the passive layer was destroyed after polarization and a development and growth of stable pits was found in the microstructural analysis after electrochemical treatment. In terms of susceptibility to corrosion, two different groups of specimens were derived from this investigation. A first group which included the two CoCr (Co1 and Co2) and three of the six NiCr alloys studied (Ni1, Ni2, and Ni3). A second group with the other NiCr alloys investigated Ni4, Ni5, and Ni6.Selective laser melting (SLM) produces a near-net-shaped product by scanning a concentrated high-power laser beam over a thin layer of metal powder to melt and solidify it. this website During the SLM process, the material temperature cyclically and sharply rises and falls. Thermal analyses using the finite element method help to understand such a complex thermal history to affect the microstructure, material properties, and performance. This paper proposes a novel calibration strategy for the heat source model to validate the thermal analysis. First, in-situ temperature measurement by high-speed thermography was conducted for the absorptivity calibration. Then, the accurate simulation error was defined by processing the cross-sectional bead shape images by the experimental observations and simulations. In order to minimize the error, the optimal shape parameters of the heat source model were efficiently found by using Bayesian optimization. Bayesian optimization allowed us to find the optimal parameters with an error of less than 4% within 50 iterations of the thermal simulations. It demonstrated that our novel calibration strategy with Bayesian optimization can be effective to improve the accuracy of predicting the temperature field during the SLM process and to save the computational costs for the heat source model optimization.Due to the particularity of welding processes, the mechanical properties of welded joint materials, especially the yield strength, are unevenly distributed, and there are also a large number of micro cracks, which seriously affects the safety performance of welded joints. In this study, to analyze the effect of the uneven distribution of yield strength on the crack propagation path of welded joints, other mechanical properties and residual stresses of welded joints are ignored. In the ABAQUS 6.14 finite element software, the user-defined field (USDFLD) subroutine is used to define the unevenly distributed yield strength, and extended finite element (XFEM) is used to simulate crack propagation. In addition, the static crack finite element model of the welded joint model is established according to the crack propagation path, which is given the static crack model constant stress intensity factor load, and the influence of an uneven yield strength distribution on mechanical field is analyzed. The results show that the crack length of welded joints as well as the plastic deformation range of the crack tip in high stress areas can be reduced with the increase of yield strength along the crack propagation direction. Moreover, the crack deflects to the low yield strength side. This study provides an analytical reference for the crack path prediction of welded joints.Arranging microparticles into desired patterns, especially in a complicated pattern with a reliable and tunable manner, is challenging but highly desirable in the fields such as biomedicine and tissue engineering. To overcome these limitations, here, by using the concept of topology in acoustics, the valley vortex is utilized to manipulate particles on a large scale with complicated 2D patterns in the star-like sonic crystals at different frequencies. A topologically protected edge state is obtained at the interface of the crystals with different valley Hall phases, which shows the ability of reliable microparticles control along the sharp corner and the capability of robust particles cluster aggregation in a defective system. The results may provide intriguing resources for future microfluidic systems in a complicated and brittle environment.Titanium orthorhombic alloys based on intermetallic Ti2AlNb-phase are attractive materials for lightweight high-temperature applications. However, conventional manufacturing of Ti2AlNb-based alloys is costly and labor-consuming. Additive Manufacturing is an attractive way of producing parts from Ti2AlNb-based alloys. High-temperature substrate preheating during Selective Laser Melting is required to obtain crack-free intermetallic alloys. Due to the nature of substrate preheating, the temperature profile along the build height might be uneven leading to inhomogeneous microstructure and defects. The microstructural homogeneity of the alloy along the build direction was evaluated. The feasibility of mitigating the microstructural inhomogeneity was investigated by fabricating Ti2AlNb-alloy samples with graded microstructure and subjecting them to annealing. Hot isostatic pressing allowed us to achieve a homogeneous microstructure, eliminate residual micro defects, and improve mechanical properties with tensile strength reaching 1027 MPa and 860 MPa at room temperature and 650 °C, correspondingly. Annealing of the microstructurally graded alloy at 1050 °C allowed us to obtain a homogeneous B2 + O microstructure with a uniform microhardness distribution. The results of the study showed that the microstructural inhomogeneity of the titanium orthorhombic alloy obtained by SLM can be mitigated by annealing or hot isostatic pressing. Additionally, it was shown that by applying multiple-laser exposure for processing each layer it is possible to locally tailor the phase volume and morphology and achieve microstructure and properties similar to the Ti2AlNb-alloy obtained at higher preheating temperatures. The development of lightweight HEAs with high strength and low cost is an urgent requirement. In this study, equimolar AlCuSiFeX (X = Cr, Mn, Zn, Sn) lightweight HEAs were fabricated by advanced powder metallurgy. The mechanical alloying was performed for 45 h, and the powder compacts were densified at 650 °C. The final results revealed that AlCuSiFeSn lightweight HEA was composed of a single face-centered cubic (FCC) and Cu81Sn22, whereas AlCuSiFeZn showed a dual FCC and body-centered cubic (BCC) structures. Similarly, AlCuSiFeMn alloy contained a BCC + FCC phase with a µ-phase, whereas a σ-phase was present in AlCuSiFeCr in addition to FCC + BCC phases. We also calculated various thermodynamic parameters to predict the solid-solution phase stability of each of the above lightweight HEAs. It was found that lightweight HEAs with additive elements Sn and Zn tend to predominant FCC phases, whereas those with Cr and Mn result in major BCC with hard µ and σ phases, which further improve their mechanical strength. A maximum fracture strain of 23% was obtained for AlCuSiFeSn followed by 19% for AlCuSiFeZn HEA. The compressive fracture mechanisms of these lightweight HEAs are also discussed and reported here.A series of porous clay samples prepared at different pretreatment temperatures have been tested in a diffusion chamber. Diffusivity and permeability were examined in a temperature range from ambient to 900 °C. Gaseous mixtures of O2, CO2, and N2 have been applied, as these species are the relevant gases in the context of clay brick firing and similar thermochemical processes. Diffusive transport characteristics have been determined by means of the mean transport-pore model, and permeability has been evaluated by Darcy's law. CO2 diffusivity increased strongly with temperature, whereas O2 diffusion was limited to a certain level. It is proposed that one should consider CO2 surface diffusion in order to explain this phenomenon. The diffusion model was expanded and surface diffusion was included in the model equation. The results of the model fit reflected the important role of incorporated carbonates of the clay foundation in gas-phase (molecular or Knudsen) diffusivity. CO2 surface diffusion was observed to exhibit similar coefficients for two different investigated clays, and is therefore indicated as a property of natural clays. Permeability showed a progressive rise with temperature, in line with related literature.Generally, waste heat is redundantly released into the surrounding by anthropogenic activities without strategized planning. Consequently, urban heat islands and global warming chronically increases over time. Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems can be potentially deployed to harvest waste heat and recuperate energy to tackle this global issue with supplementary generation of electrical energy. This paper presents a critical review on two dominant types of semiconductor materials, namely gallium antimonide (GaSb) and indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), as the potential candidates for TPV cells. The advantages and drawbacks of non-epitaxy and epitaxy growth methods are well-discussed based on different semiconductor materials. In addition, this paper critically examines and summarizes the electrical cell performance of TPV cells made of GaSb, InGaAs and other narrow bandgap semiconductor materials. The cell conversion efficiency improvement in terms of structural design and architectural optimization are also comprehensively analyzed and discussed. Lastly, the practical applications, current issues and challenges of TPV cells are critically reviewed and concluded with recommendations for future research. The highlighted insights of this review will contribute to the increase in effort towards development of future TPV systems with improved cell conversion efficiency. The construction of an engine requires optimized geometry and superb material properties in various environments. Tensile and yield strength are not the only parameters essential to consider. Hardness, impact toughness, and ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) are also crucial. In this paper, Balder, Chromium-Molybdenum-Vanadium-Nickel steel with low impact toughness attested is considered. It contains both high Nickel and high Vanadium content, a rare combination among iron-based alloys. This study aims at proving that conventional heat treatment can improve its impact toughness while maintaining hardness level, exceeding its to-date performance. Steel's exact elemental composition was checked, and material samples' hardness and impact toughness were measured. Four heat treatments were proposed, then hardness and impact toughness were measured again. It was established that impact toughness over three times higher than marketed (57.3 J against 17 J) can be achieved with simultaneous 2 HRC points (from 46.
