Choosing a Baby Crib
It's exciting to design a nursery, however, choosing the crib is one of the most important decisions. The design of the slats, mattress height or the ability to convert, the crib that your baby sleeps on will affect their health and development.
Examine the crib's hardware frequently. Bolts and nails may become loose with time. Also, don't place your crib near window blinds or drapes that dangle, which pose a strangulation hazard for your baby.
Size
When shopping for a crib, size is an important aspect. The crib should be big enough to accommodate a sleepy baby, yet small enough to allow you to be able to reach them easily and take care of them. It should also be durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of daily use.
The majority of cribs are constructed from wood or metal, and the majority of them include the slatted sides. These features allow caregivers to observe the baby from different angles and also encourage airflow. Cribs are utilized from birth until the child is around two years old. of age, at which point they require moving into a toddler bed.
Most cribs are equipped with the mattress height which can be adjusted to suit the baby's growing needs. The lowest setting is ideal for newborns, while the highest setting is ideal for babies who can sit up or crawl. Make sure you measure the interior of your crib to be sure that the mattress fits, as the slatted design of a lot of cribs leave tiny gaps that could be dangerous for your baby.
Manufacturers have cribs and mattresses that are not standard sizes, but still have the same safety standards. These include play yards as well as portable infant beds and bassinets. These cribs typically come with mesh or rigid sides, and they tend to be smaller than cribs that are full-size.
If you choose a crib that is not standard, make sure you review the manufacturer's guidelines for mattress size recommendations. There could be cribs beds that are different from the standard crib size of 52 inches long and 28 inches wide. It is also recommended to test the gap between the crib and mattress to be sure it's not larger than 1 inch which is the most safe space.
A waterproof cover can protect your baby's bed from spills and accidents. Choose one with an antimicrobial barrier that helps reduce bacteria, and a hypoallergenic layer that blocks allergens.
If you are considering a crib with drop-sides, know that they were linked to the deaths of 32 infants between 2000 and 2010, and are banned in the US in 2011. Even if you intend to purchase or receive a drop-side baby crib ensure that you dispose of it when your child is 35 inches or is able to get out.
Safety
A crib for your baby is the most secure spot for your child. It's a place to relax and also a place where you can keep them close and observe them often. There are a variety of cribs and brands on the market all of them must comply with certain safety standards. These standards are laid out by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and they make sure the cribs you buy are safe for your baby.
Before you place your child in the crib, ensure that the crib is clean, free of dust and dander. Take away any toys or stuffed animals that may fall out of the crib. Also, do not use any blankets or pillows in the crib; these can cause death by suffocation. Instead, you should use mattress pads and a fitted sheet.
Some commenters suggested that cribs should be in compliance with formaldehyde emission standards outlined in the Formaldehyde Standards for Wood Products Act. L. 111-199) and that cribs made of composite wood should be tested for compliance. The CPSC has determined that, even though these regulations do not directly apply to cribs or other furniture made from composite wood, it is a good idea to insist on the compliance of this law.
Some commenters suggested that the requirement that fasteners are tightened again between dynamic tests should be included in the crib standard being revised. We strongly disagree with this suggestion. The dynamic tests - such as the shake test and the vertical mattress support impact test - are designed to replicate and increase the use and abuse of cribs by children. Loose screws are the second leading cause of fatal incidents in cribs.
Other comments were based on EWS incident information. These data indicate that the two most frequent crib hazards are unsafe mattresses and drop-sides. Therefore, we decided to concentrate on these issues in the rulemaking process and to incorporate the performance standards already contained in the existing mandatory standard, with reference. Incorporation by reference is the most effective way to ensure that the safety of cribs is maintained in a consistent and efficient manner.
Style
It's a satisfying and thrilling experience to design your baby's nursery. The crib is the main focal point of any nursery, so you should choose one that suits your style and complements the decor. Whether you prefer a modern and minimalist style or more traditional, there are plenty of chic cribs to pick from. You can find options in every price range, from affordable to high-end. Make sure that the crib you pick has all the safety requirements.
A crib is a compact bed that is specially designed for babies and infants. It is constructed from sturdy materials such as wood and is fitted with slatted wall panels to allow for safe ventilation. Cribs are generally larger than bassinets and may be more expensive, but they offer more functionality for your baby's the first three years of life.
There are a variety of crib designs that are available, however all must meet safety standards. The crib slats, as an instance, should not exceed 6 centimeters (about the size of a can of soda) apart. It is also recommended to beware of cutouts or ornaments in the footboard and headboard.
The mattress should be able to fit comfortably into the crib's opening. This is crucial because gaps between the crib and mattress can cause infants legs or arms to get caught in. Many cribs come with bars for stabilization that help keep the mattress in its place. But if you have a crib that doesn't have them, ensure you buy a mattress pad for extra support.
A great crib also has a low-sitting mattress, which helps prevent children from stepping over the edge of the crib. This is a fantastic feature for parents with smaller children or rooms that are limited in size. However, make sure to check out the mattress's height prior your purchase. The majority of mattresses will include a sticker on the corner that indicates the crib's minimum and maximum mattress heights.
Consider buying a convertible crib if want your crib to change with your child. These types of cribs can be turned into a toddler bed, a daybed and even a bed that is full size. Some cribs on our list, like the Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 and Delta Children Tribeca 4-in-1, have conversion kits that are included. The rest will require an extra purchase.
Budget
While the majority of cribs are priced at hundreds of dollars Some cribs are more affordable. The Graco Classic 4 in 1 Crib is less than 200 dollars and has been rated 5 stars by BabyCenter and Baby Bargains. It also has a medium-height profile that makes it simple to take your baby in and out.
Another affordable crib is the Munchkin Brica Travel Pod. This portable play and sleep option is simple to install and folds away in just a few minutes. It can be used indoors or outdoors on a patio or deck and is suitable for babies up to 15 pounds. It's not a permanent sleep solution, however, since your baby will grow out of it after approximately six months.
You can also find affordable bassinets and cradles that you can use during the first few weeks to keep your baby snug and close. While they are a bit more expensive than a standard crib they are also more compact and easier to move around. They are only a temporary sleep solution for your baby and they will outgrow it before their first birthday.
A quality crib should be sturdy and solid mattress support that is able to be adjusted into four different positions, based on your baby's growth. It should also be low enough to allow you to get in and out easily, especially in the case of children under 5'5. Some cribs feature posts that are higher than 1 8 inch above the mattress opening, which could cause your child to get trapped when they play or climb.
Some cribs feature attached changing areas which can help diapering a bit more convenient and quicker. While these are convenient but they can take up more space than traditional cribs, and might not be the best option for smaller nurseries.
Take a look at the materials the crib is made of. A lot of cribs made of particleboard. These materials can contain formaldehyde, which is a well-known carcinogen. Look for a crib that is made out of solid wood or has an aluminum base instead.
