We compared a fast, single breath-hold three dimensional LGE sequence (3D LGE) with an established two dimensional multi breath-hold sequence (2D LGE) and evaluated image quality and the amount of myocardial fibrosis in patients with acute and chronic myocarditis. 3D LGE and 2D LGE (both spatial resolution 1.5 × 1.5 mm2, slice-thickness 8 mm, field of view 350 × 350 mm2) were acquired in 25 patients with acute myocarditis (mean age 40 ± 18 years, 7 female) and 27 patients with chronic myocarditis (mean age 44 ± 22 years, 9 female) on a 1.5 T MR system. Image quality was evaluated by two independent, blinded readers using a 5-point Likert scale. Total myocardial mass, fibrotic mass and total fibrotic tissue percentage were quantified for both sequences in both groups. There was no significant difference in image quality between 3D und 2D acquisitions in patients with acute (p = 0.8) and chronic (p = 0.5) myocarditis. No significant differences between 3D and 2D acquisitions could be shown for myocardial mass (acute p = 0.2; chronic p = 0.3), fibrous tissue mass (acute p = 0.7; chronic p = 0.1) and total fibrous percentage (acute p = 0.4 and chronic p = 0.2). Inter-observer agreement was substantial to almost perfect. Acquisition time was significantly shorter for 3D LGE (24 ± 5 s) as compared to 2D LGE (350 ± 58 s, p  less then  0.001). In patients with acute and chronic myocarditis 3D LGE imaging shows equal diagnostic quality compared to standard 2D LGE imaging but with significantly reduced acquisition time.The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of levels of urinary total polyphenols considered as a proxy measure of polyphenol intake, with longitudinal changes of bone properties, in the InCHIANTI study. Polyphenols, micronutrients ingested through plant-based foods, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may contribute to osteoporosis prevention. We evaluated associations of high levels of urinary total polyphenols (UTP), a proxy measure of polyphenol intake, with longitudinal changes of bone properties in a representative cohort of free-living participants of the InCHIANTI study.

Distal radius fractures are extremely common injuries affecting a wide range of patient demographics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of distal radius fractures managed initially with closed reduction and immobilization in either a below elbow volar-dorsal splint versus sugar-tong splint prior to conversion into a short arm cast.

We performed a retrospective study of patients with distal radius fractures placed in a sugar-tong (n = 45) and volar-dorsal splint (n = 36). Anteroposterior and lateral radiographs were evaluated immediately after closed reduction and placement into either a sugar-tong or volar-dorsal splint. The radial inclination, radial length, volar tilt, and intra-articular displacement were measured.

The average age was not significantly different between groups (Diff 1.1years, P = 0.8766). Initial clinic follow-up radiographs illustrated significantly lower radial inclination in the sugar-tong group than volar-dorsal group (17.1 vs. 19, P = 0.0443). Follow-up mean radial length was not significantly lower in the sugar-tong than volar-dorsal group (8.4 vs. 9.2, P = 0.0858). Palmar tilt and articular step-off was not significantly different between splint types. The loss of reduction was 28.8% for the sugar-tong and 25.0% for the volar-dorsal group (P = 0.696).

Our results did not demonstrate a significant difference in loss of reduction rates between the two splint groups. There was no significant difference between the sugar-tong and volar-dorsal groups in terms of loss of radial length and volar tilt. Loss of reduction was similar between groups suggesting no advantage of a volar-dorsal splint compared to a sugar-tong splint.

Based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect (FRET) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the levels of ZEN, FB1, and OTA can be simultaneously determined. Under 980-nm and 650-nm laser excitation, the logarithmic values of fluorescence signal intensities at 543 nm and 670 nm are slowly increased as the concentrations of ZEN and OTA vary from 0.1 ng mL-1 and 0.05 ng mL-1 to 100 ng mL-1 and 25 ng mL-1, respectively. For FB1, under 980-nm laser excitation, the logarithmic value of SERS signal intensity at 1567 cm-1 gradually increases with the concentration of FB1 in the range 0.05-200 pg mL-1 (R2 = 0.996). The detection limits of the proposed assay for ZEN, OTA, and FB1 are 0.03 ng mL-1, 0.01 ng mL-1, and 0.02 pg mL-1, respectively. The selectivity experiment results indicate this assay possesses a high selectivity over other commonly encountered mycotoxins.
