Through in-depth interviews with those centrally involved in the case, interviews with criminal justice professionals currently working with video evidence of violent crime, and review of official documents and media reports, we explore the complex role video evidence played in this case and the legacy it continues to have in society, the justice system, and in the individual lives of those involved twenty-five years later. Two primary sources of harm arose in our analysis critogenic harm related to the use of video evidence in the justice process; and harm arising from the media publicity surrounding the video evidence. Both of these sources of harm intensified the trauma for victims and their families, and contributed to distress and trauma reactions of criminal justice professionals and members of the jury. Given the global increase in the use of video-evidence in criminal justice processes, it is imperative that continuing harms to those involved in the process are considered and mitigated.
Microvascular involvement in patients with diabetes mellitus is one of the causes of retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. The same pathologic processes may occur in the inner ear structures. This case-control study aimed to evaluate the hearing thresholds in type 2 diabetic patients with different severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and to compare these findings with controls.
We evaluated the hearing threshold in four groups of eligible subjects aged 20-70years. These groups were controls, diabetic patients with no-DR, with mild-moderate non-proliferative DR (NPDR), and with severe NPDR/proliferative DR (PDR). Each group consisted of 105 subjects. Speech-frequency and high-frequency hearing levels (SFHL and HFHL, respectively) were measured and log-transformed. Analysis of covariance was used. The prevalence rate of moderate or more hearing loss in the groups was estimated.
In total, 194 men and 226 women participated. The ratio of means of SFHL and HFHL between PDR and controls was 0.18 and 0.20, respectively. Hearing loss was prevalent in severe NPDR/PDR (adjusted prevalence ratio 3.36 for SFHL and 1.51 for HFHL) compared to controls. Also, the prevalence of high-frequency hearing loss was more in mild-moderate NPDR (adjusted prevalence ratio 1.33).
The magnitude of the increase in hearing impairment prevalence between the severe NPDR/PDR patients and controls was about 24% for both SFHL and HFHL. We recommend hearing assessment in the screening of the DR patients.

To determine changes in nasal mucus Interleukin-10 (IL-10) before and after intranasal theophylline treatment in hyposmic patients, and the relationship of these changes to orally administered theophylline treatment.
IL-10 was measured in nasal mucus samples of 17 normal subjects and 39 patients with hyposmia of multiple etiologies by use of a sensitive spectrophotometric ELISA assay. Hyposmia is defined clinically by standardized evaluation of impaired olfactometry, as well as subjectively self reported by the patient.
Prior to treatment, IL-10 levels in nasal mucus were increased in hyposmic patients compared to controls. Following intranasal theophylline administration, over half of treated patients experienced a decrease of nasal mucus IL-10 toward control levels, correlated with a significant improvement in taste and smell function. Patients who increased with intranasal administration, similar to previously reported oral administration, showed no significant improvement in taste or smell function.

Adolescents with pre-existing psychiatric disorders have been at particular risk of increased mental health problems and problematic media use. 178 patients, aged 12-18 years, referred before the COVID-19 outbreak to child and adolescent psychiatry, participated in an anonymous online survey on the impact of the lockdown on media use and mental well-being. The survey was conducted approximately one month after the first easing of restrictions following a six-week lockdown in Switzerland. Based on self-report, half of the patients had been diagnosed with internalizing disorders (ID; depression or anxiety disorder) and the other half with other disorders (non-ID, e.g. ADHD, autistic spectrum disorder). Patients with ID reported higher emotional distress during the lockdown, and a larger number of patients with ID indicated a deterioration of pre-existing symptoms compared to non-ID patients. Although more patients with ID than with non-ID indicated spending a large amount of time on social media, social media time per day in hours was not significantly higher in ID. Patients with ID indicated a higher impact of media use on well-being and mood in everyday life during the lockdown. Social media time was higher in worsened than in improved non-ID patients, while the opposite was found in ID patients, indicating a possible protective effect of media use at least for some ID patients. The results confirm positive as well as negative associations between mental health, emotional well-being and media use for adolescents with ID during the lockdown.The entactogen 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is increasingly being recognized for its therapeutic potential but is also widespread in nightlife settings where it may co-occur with crime. Since previous research detected impaired verbal memory during acute MDMA intoxication, understanding the drug's ramifications in an applied legal context becomes crucial. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to examine acute and delayed effects of MDMA (75 mg) on false memory in 60 healthy volunteers with a history of MDMA use, using three well-established false memory methods a basic, associative word list (Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM)) paradigm and two applied misinformation tasks using a virtual reality crime. Memory was tested immediately (encoding and retrieval under drug influence) and 1 week later (retrieval when sober). Small MDMA-induced impairments of true memory in the word list task were detected at both time points. MDMA increased false memory for related but non-critical lures during the immediate test, and decreased false memory for critical lures after a delay. Episodic memory assessed in the misinformation tasks was not consistently affected. Findings indicate a complex memory profile but no heightened vulnerability to external suggestion in response to MDMA intoxication. Recommendations for future applied legal psychological research include adding measures of recall on top of recognition, using study designs that separate the different memory phases, and potentially testing higher doses. Further research on false memories and suggestibility using imagination procedures can also be relevant for the clinical context.Postural control decrements with advancing age have been largely identified in the literature. (2020) protocol to investigate automatic postural control and prefrontal cortex activation in older adults when simultaneously performing quiet standing wtih different attention-demanding cognitive tasks. learn more Nineteen healthy older adults (71.47 ± 6.01 years) were recruited and self-reported no hearing, musculoskeletal and neurological problems. Older adults were required to perform three different cognitive loads while seated (SC), quietly standing on a force platform (SM), and performing both tasks simultaneously (DT). Static center-of-pressure measurements and wavelet discrete transform did not reveal postural automaticity in dual-task conditions. Conversely, sample entropy values were significantly greater when performing n-back compared to all other tasks in the medial-lateral direction, and significantly greater than SM in the anterior-posterior direction. The relative concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) of the left hemisphere was significantly greater than the right when performing n-back, and significantly greater within the left hemisphere when performing n-back compared to double-number sequence. Collectively, our results do not support the presence of automatic postural control in dual-task conditions for older adults. The present study highlights the importance of using numerous variables when investigating posture in order to capture its complexity.
Healthcare workers (HCWs) from COVID-19 pandemic hotspots across the globe have reported mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, or sleep problems. Many studies have focused on identifying modifiable risk factors, such as being afraid of getting infected or reporting shortage of personal protective equipment, but none have explored the role of protective factors.
This cross-sectional study used an online survey to describe the association between three potentially protective factors (self-reported resilience, self-perceived social support from colleagues at work, and self-perceived social support from relatives and friends) and three mental health outcomes, namely psychological distress, depression symptoms, and death thoughts in a large sample of Spanish HCWs during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We recruited 2372 respondents between April 26th and June 22nd, 2020. Resilience and self-perceived social support were inversely associated with mental health problems (psychological distress, depression symptoms, and death thoughts), after adjusting for potential sources of confounding.
Resilience and self-perceived social support might protect HCWs against negative mental health outcomes. Public health strategies targeting these modifiable determinants might help to reduce the impact of the pandemic on HCWs' mental health.
