These interactions are multifaceted and are influenced by environmental conditions. In this review, we discuss phage-bacteria interactions as they relate to the complex environment of the gut. Within the mammalian and invertebrate guts, phages and bacteria engage in diverse interactions including genetic coexistence through lysogeny, and phages directly modulate microbiota composition and the immune system with consequences that are becoming recognized as potential drivers of health and disease. With greater depth of understanding of phage-bacteria interactions in the gut and the outcomes, future phage therapies become possible. Composed of only a few hundred nucleotides and being unable to code for proteins, viroids represent the lowest level of complexity for an infectious agent, even below that of the smallest known viruses. Despite the relatively small size, viroids contain RNA structural elements embracing all the information needed to interact with host factors involved in their infectious cycle, thus providing models for studying structure-function relationships of RNA. Viroids are specifically targeted to nuclei (family Pospiviroidae) or chloroplasts (family Avsunviroidae), where replication based on rolling-circle mechanisms takes place. They move locally and systemically through plasmodesmata and phloem, respectively, and may elicit symptoms in the infected host, with pathogenic pathways linked to RNA silencing and other plant defense responses. In this review, recent advances in the dissection of the complex interplay between viroids and plants are presented, highlighting knowledge gaps and perspectives for future research. However, it is not always easy to choose a priori, from scores of potential measures, an appropriate subset to evaluate efficacy outcomes considering the wide range of disease stages with different phenotypic features. This article reviews measurements of visual function and retinal structure that our group has used over the past three decades to understand the natural history of IRDs. We include measures of light sensitivity, retinal structure, mapping of natural fluorophores, evaluation of pupillary light reflex, and oculomotor control. Atrogin-1 and muscle ring finger-1 (MuRF1) are dramatically upregulated in various muscle atrophy. Inhibition of Atrogin-1 and MuRF1 protects against muscle atrophy. MiR-29 plays an important regulatory role in skeletal muscle development. However, the function of miR-29 in skeletal muscle protein metabolism is not clear. To investigate the function of miR-29, we generated miR-29 knockout mice and the miR-29ab1 cluster overexpression mice. The disruption of miR-29 led to severe atrophy of skeletal muscle during puberty, and the muscle-specific overexpression of the miR-29ab1 cluster protected against denervation-induced and fasting-induced muscle atrophy. Furthermore, the overexpression of miR-29a, b mimics in myotubes resisted the muscle atrophy. MuRF1 was the direct target gene of miR-29a, b. These results demonstrate that miR-29ab1 cluster plays a critical role in the maintenance of skeletal muscle. MiR-29ab1 cluster is the excellent inhibitor of MuRF1, ultimately indicating that miR-29ab1 cluster is good therapeutic molecule candidate for adulthood.
Patient-reported outcomes may be associated with cancer outcomes. We evaluated clinically significant fatigue (CSF), overall survival, adverse events (AEs), and quality of life (QOL) during cancer treatment.

We compared outcomes in four phase II or III chemotherapy trials, two advanced non-small-cell lung cancer and two advanced hormone-refractory prostate cancer, with or without baseline CSF. CSF was defined as a rating of two or greater on the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy fatigue question or a European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 fatigue symptom score of 50% or greater. Survival was compared according to CSF using Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox regression models. Differences in AE rates by CSF were assessed via chi-squared tests, and QOL changes from baseline to 3 months via linear regression.

Of 1,994 participants, 1,907 (median age 69 years, range 32-91) had complete baseline QOL survey data, with 52% reporting CSF at baseline. For the two hormone-refractory prostate cancer studies, baseline CSF was associated with higher mortality rates, with adjusted hazard ratios of (95% CI,
