We report a new sensor for the specific detection of lead ions (Pb2+) in contaminated water based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as donors and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as receptors. The UCNPs modified with Pb2+ aptamers could bind to Au NPs, which were functionalized with complementary DNA through hybridization. The green fluorescence of UCNPs was quenched to a maximum rate of 80% due to the close proximity between the energy donor and the acceptor. In the presence of Pb2+, the FRET process was broken because Pb2+ induced the formation of G-quadruplexes from aptamers, resulting in unwound DNA duplexes and separated acceptors from donors. The fluorescence of UCNPs was restored, and the relative intensity had a significant linear correlation with Pb2+ concentration from 0 to 50 nM. The sensor had a detection limit as low as 4.1 nM in a buffer solution. More importantly, the sensor exhibited specific detection of Pb2+ in complex metal ions, demonstrating high selectivity in practical application. The developed FRET prober may open up a new insight into the specific detection of environmental pollution. Skarns represent one of the most important types of tungsten deposits in terms of reserves. They contain fine-grained scheelite (CaWO4) associated with complex gangue minerals, i.e., minerals that display similar properties, particularly surface properties, compared to scheelite. Consistently, the froth flotation of scheelite still remains, in the twenty first century, a strong scientific, industrial, and technical challenge. Various reagents suitable for scheelite flotation (collectors and depressants, mostly) are reviewed in the present work, with a strong focus on the separation of scheelite from calcium salts, namely, fluorite, apatite, and calcite, which generally represent significant amounts in tungsten skarns. Albeit some reagents allow increasing significantly the selectivity regarding a mineral, most reagents fail in providing a good global selectivity in favor of scheelite. Overall, the greenest, most efficient, and cheapest method for scheelite flotation is to use fatty acids as collectors with sodium silicate as depressant, although this solution suffers from a crucial lack of selectivity regarding the above-mentioned calcium salts. Therefore, the use of reagent combinations, commonly displaying synergistic effects, is highly recommended to achieve a selective flotation of scheelite from the calcium salts as well as from calcium silicates. Catalytic hydrogenation reactions of LA into the pivotal intermediate compound γ-valerolactone (GVL), and beyond GVL to yield valeric acid (VA), 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PDO), and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) have gained considerable attention in the last decade. Among the various transition metals used as catalysts in LA hydrogenation reactions, ruthenium-based catalytic systems have been the most extensively applied by far, due to the inherent ability of ruthenium under mild conditions to hydrogenate the keto functionality of LA selectively into an alcohol group to form 4-hydroxyvaleric acid intermediate, which yields GVL spontaneously after dehydration and cyclization. This review focuses on recent advances in the field of aqueous-phn catalytic activities. The promotional effect of water was proven by numerous experimental investigations and several theoretical studies employing various types of catalytic systems; (iv) the large heat capacity of water renders it an excellent medium to perform large scale exothermic hydrogenations more safely and selectively; and (v) water is a non-toxic, safe, non-inflammable, abundantly available, ubiquitous, inexpensive, and green/sustainable solvent. Ceramic membranes fabricated by an in situ oxidation method were used as an inter-diffusion barrier between the Pd layer and the Ti-Al alloy support of the membranes to prevent intermetallic diffusion. The stabilities of the ceramic membranes at high temperatures in an H2 atmosphere were investigated. The permeation performances and stabilities of the Pd/ceramic/Ti-Al alloy composite membranes were also studied. The results showed that the thickness, pore size, and microstructure of the ceramic membranes did not change significantly after the treatment in an H2 atmosphere at high temperatures, indicating that the ceramic membranes prepared by the in situ oxidation method were stable in an H2 atmosphere at high temperatures. The thickness of the Pd layer was ~13 μm. The hydrogen permeability and H2/N2 selectivity of the Pd composite membranes at 773 K were 2.13 × 10-3 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-0.5 and 600, respectively. In addition, the H2 flux, N2 flux, and H2/N2 selectivity of the composite membranes remained nearly constant over three heat cycles (under the same conditions), indicating that the structures of the Pd/ceramic/Ti-Al alloy composite membranes were stable. Under these conditions, the perovskite surface was preserved from interaction with the solvent. Over a timescale of 90 days, HP-PSCs were systematically compared to reference cells with carbon-based top electrodes deposited by doctor blading (DB). We found that all the photovoltaic parameters recorded in HP-PSCs during time under ambient conditions settled on values systematically higher than those measured in the reference DB-PSCs, with efficiency stabilized at around 6% within the first few measurements. On the other hand, in DB-PSCs, a long-lasting (~14 days) degrading transient of the performances was observed, with a loss of efficiency from an initial ~8% to ~3%. Moreover, in HP-PSCs, a systematic day-by-day recovery of the efficiency after operation was observed (Δ~2%) by leaving the cell under open circuit, a nitrogen environment, and dark conditions. Noteworthily, a full recovery of all the parameters was observed at the end of the experiment, while DB-PSCs showed only a partial recovery under the same conditions. Hence, the complete release of solvent from the carbon contact, before an interface is established with the perovskite layer, offers a definite advantage through the long period of operation in preventing irreversible degradation. Our findings indeed highlight the crucial role of the interfaces and their feasible preservation under nitrogen atmosphere. A majority of countries and regulators, such as the European Union, have established a series of requirements for their use, and they have also set maximum tolerance levels. The development of high sensitivity and a specific analytical platform for mycotoxins is much in demand to address new challenges for food safety worldwide. Due to the superiority of simple, rapid, and low-cost characteristics, aptamer-based biosensors have successfully been developed for the detection of various mycotoxins with high sensitivity and selectivity compared with traditional instrumental methods and immunological approaches. In this article, we discuss and analyze the development of aptasensors for mycotoxins determination in food and agricultural products over the last 11 years and cover the literatures from the first report in 2008 until the present time. In addition, challenges and future trends for the selection of aptamers toward various mycotoxins and aptasensors for multi-mycotoxins analyses are summarized. Given the promising development and potential application of aptasensors, future research studies made will witness the great practicality of using aptamer-based biosensors within the field of food safety. The taxation of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) in particular is noted to be an effective measure, and SSBs taxes have already been implemented in several countries worldwide. However, although the evidence base suggests that this will be effective in helping to combat rising obesity rates, opponents of SSBs taxation argue that it is illiberal and paternalistic, and therefore should be avoided. Bioethical analysis may play an essential role in clarifying whether policymakers should adopt SSBs taxes as part of wider obesity strategy. In this article we argue that no single ethical theory can account for the complexities inherent in obesity prevention strategy, especially the liberal theories relied upon by opponents of SSBs taxation. We contend that a pluralist approach to the ethics of SSBs taxation must be adopted as the only suitable way of accounting for the multiple overlapping, and sometimes, conflicting factors that are relevant to determining the moral acceptability of such an intervention. This study aims to retrospectively quantify the physical growth status, evaluate the feeding methods, and identify the possible correlation of CL/P types with growth failure. Methods The length and weight of 508 infants with CL/P and 118 healthy infants were recorded at the date of admission. The weight-for-age (W/A), length-for-age (L/A), and body mass index-for-age (BMI) of the infants were calculated. Results The L/A values were significantly lower in the infants with cleft lip (CL, 123 cases) and cleft lip with palate (CLP, 122 cases) than those of the control infants (p less then 0.01). The W/A values of the infants with CP (263 cases) and CLP were significantly lower than those of the control infants (p less then 0.05). However, the BMI index was not significantly different between any of the studied groups and the controls. In the mixed feeding group, the infants with CL and CP showed significantly lower L/A (p less then 0.
