Botulinum toxin A (BTXA) is one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures worldwide. Overall, this procedure is associated with favorable complications profile. The aim of this study was to test whether increased energy expenditure (EE), independent of physical activity, reduces acute diet-induced weight gain through tighter coupling of energy intake to energy demand and enhanced metabolic adaptations.

Indirect calorimetry and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging were used to assess energy metabolism and body composition during 7-day high-fat/high-sucrose (HFHS) feeding in male and female mice housed at divergent temperatures (20°C vs. 30°C).

As previously observed, 30°C housing resulted in lower total EE and energy intake compared with 20°C mice regardless of sex. Interestingly, housing temperature did not impact HFHS-induced weight gain in females, whereas 30°C male mice gained more weight than 20°C males. Energy intake coupling to EE during HFHS feeding was greater in 20°C versus 30°C housing, with females greater at both temperatures. Fat mass gain was greater in 30°C mice compared with 20°C mice, whereas females gained less fat mass than males. Strikingly, female 20°C mice gained considerably more fat-free mass than 30°C mice. Reduced fat mass gain was associated with greater metabolic flexibility to HFHS, whereas fat-free mass gain was associated with diet-induced adaptive thermogenesis.

These data reveal that EE and sex interact to impact energy homeostasis and metabolic adaptation to acute HFHS feeding, altering weight gain and body composition change.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is one of the methods of tube feeding in patients who are incapable of oral intake. There are no reports on risk factors for bleeding at PEG construction. Our main objective was to investigate the risks and predictors of bleeding associated with PEG construction.

This retrospective, observational study included patients who had undergone PEG construction at our institution. To investigate the risks of bleeding associated with PEG construction, we compared the baseline characteristics between bleeding and non-bleeding patients. In terms of early predictors of post-PEG bleeding, we evaluated whether there had been a decrease from baseline of >10% in hemoglobin levels on the day after the procedure.

The median preoperative albumin levels were 22.5 g/L (range 20-29 g/L) and 30 g/L (range 18-40 g/L) in the bleeding and non-bleeding groups, respectively (P = 0.014, Mann-Whitney U-test). The median preoperative platelet counts were 177 500 (range 87 000-265 000) and 271 000 (83 000-749 000) in the bleeding and non-bleeding groups, respectively (P = 0.043, Mann-Whitney U-test). The number of patients for whom hemoglobin levels decreased >10% from baseline on the day after the procedure differed significantly between the bleeding and non-bleeding groups (2/4, 50% and 3/58, 5.45%), respectively (P = 0.002, Pearson's χ
-test).

Ictal head version is a common clinical manifestation of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Nevertheless, the location of the symptomatogenic zone and the network involved in head version remains unclear. We attempt to explain these problems by analyzing interictal
FDG-PET imaging and ictal stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) recordings in MTLE patients.

Fifty-eight patients with MTLE were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into version (+) and (-) groups according to the occurrence of versive head movements. The interictal PET data were compared among 18 healthy controls and the (+) and (-) groups. Furthermore, epileptogenicity index (EI) values and correlations with the onset time of head version were analyzed with SEEG.

Intergroup comparisons showed that PET differences were observed in the middle temporal neocortex (MTN), posterior temporal neocortex (PTN), supramarginal gyrus (SMG), and inferior parietal lobe (IPL). The EI values in the SMG, MTN, and PTN were significantly higher in the version (+) group than in the version (-) group. A linear relationship was observed between head version onset and ipsilateral onset time in the SMG, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), MTN, and PTN. A linear relationship was observed between EI, the difference between version onset and temporal neocortex onset, and the y-axis of the MNI coordinate.

Knowledge of how elderly patients undergoing major emergency abdominal surgery and their close family members experience the course of illness is limited. Little is known about how such surgery and hospitalisation affect elderly patients' daily life after discharge. It is well known that such patients have an increased risk of mortality and that their physical functional level often decreases during hospitalisation, which can make them dependent on family or homecare services. Critical illness and caregiving for a close relative can be a stressful experience for families, which are at risk of developing stress-related symptoms.

A phenomenological study was conducted to gain in-depth descriptions through 15 family interviews with 15 patients who had undergone major emergency abdominal surgery and 20 of their close adult family members. Gender differences in CD individuals have been reported clinically and in the context of neural responses to cue-induced craving and stress reactivity. The variability of GMV in select brain areas between men and women (e.g., limbic regions) underscores the importance of exploring interaction effects between gender and cocaine dependence on brain structure. Therefore, voxel-based morphometry data derived from the ENIGMA Addiction Consortium were used to investigate potential gender differences in GMV in CD individuals compared to matched controls (CTL). T1-weighted MRI scans and clinical data were pooled from seven sites yielding 420 gender- and age-matched participants CD men (CDM, n = 140); CD women (CDW, n = 70); control men (CTLM, n = 140); and control women (CTLW, n = 70). Differences in GMV were assessed using a 2 × 2 ANCOVA, and voxelwise whole-brain linear regressions were conducted to explore relationships between GMV and duration of cocaine use. All analyses were corrected for age, total intracranial volume, and site. Diagnostic differences were predominantly found in frontal regions (CD  less then  CTL). Interestingly, gender × diagnosis interactions in the left anterior insula and left lingual gyrus were also documented, driven by differences in women (CDW  less then  CTLW). Further, lower right hippocampal GMV was associated with greater cocaine duration in CDM.
