Electrochemical seismic sensors that employ liquid as their inertial masses have the advantages of high performances in the low-frequency domain and a large working inclination. However, the surrounding temperature changes have serious impacts on the sensitivities of the sensors, which makes them unable to work as expected. This paper studied the temperature characteristics of electrochemical seismic sensors based on MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), and analyzed the influences of the temperature effects on the open-loop and closed-loop amplitude-frequency curves. Most importantly, the temperature compensation circuits based on thermistors were developed, which effectively adjusted pole frequencies and sensitivity coefficients, and finally realized the real-time temperature compensation for both open-loop and closed-loop measurements for the first time. The results showed that in the temperature range of -10 °C ~ +40 °C, and with the 3 dB bandwidth range of 0.01 Hz ~ 40 Hz, the change of the maximum sensitivity was reduced from about 25 dB before temperature compensation to less than 2 dB after temperature compensation.Bisphenol A (BPA) is considered as one of the most extensively synthesized and used chemicals for industrial and consumer products. Previous investigations have established that exposure to BPA has been linked to developmental, reproductive, cardiovascular, immune, and metabolic effects. Several jurisdictions have imposed restrictions and/or have banned the use of BPA in packaging material and other consumer goods. Hence, manufacturers have replaced BPA with its analogues that have a similar chemical structure. Some of these analogues have shown similar endocrine effects as BPA, while others have not been assessed. In this investigation, we compared the neurodevelopmental effects of BPA and its major replacement Bisphenol F (BPF) on rat fetal neural stem cells (rNSCs). rNSCs were exposed to cell-specific differentiation media with non-cytotoxic doses of BPA or BPF at the range of 0.05 M to 100 M concentrations and measured the degree of cell proliferation, differentiation, and morphometric parameters. Both of these compounds increased cell proliferation and impacted the differentiation rates of oligodendrocytes and neurons, in a concentration-dependent manner. Further, there were concentration-dependent decreases in the maturation of oligodendrocytes and neurons, with a concomitant increase in immature oligodendrocytes and neurons. In contrast, neither BPA nor BPF had any overall effect on cellular proliferation or the cytotoxicity of astrocytes. However, there was a concentration-dependent increase in astrocyte differentiation and morphological changes. Morphometric analysis for the astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and neurons showed a reduction in the arborization. These data show that fetal rNSCs exposed to either BPA or BPF lead to comparable changes in the cellular differentiation, proliferation, and arborization processes.In the current research, three electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds with different pore morphology induced by changing the electrospinning parameters, spinning time and rate, have been prepared in order to provide a fundamental understanding on the effects pore morphology have on nutrient transport behaviour in hollow fibre membrane bioreactor (HFMB). After determining the porosity of the scaffolds, they were investigated for glucose diffusivity using cell culture media (CCM) and distilled water in a diffusion cell at 37 °C. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the microstructure of the scaffolds were analysed further using ImageJ software to determine the porosity and glucose diffusivity. A Krogh cylinder model was used to determine the glucose transport profile with dimensionless variables within the HFMB. The paper discusses the roles of various dimensionless numbers (e.g., Péclet and Damköhler numbers) and non-dimensional groups of variables (e.g., non-dimensional fibre radius) on determining glucose concentration profiles, especially in the scaffold region. A negative linear relationship between glucose diffusivities across PCL scaffolds and the minimum glucose concentrations (i.e., concentration on the outer fibre edge on the outlet side (at z = 1 and r = 3.2) was also found. It was shown that the efficiency of glucose consumption improves with scaffolds of higher diffusivities. The results of this study are expected to help in optimizing designs of HFMB as well as carry out more accurate up scaling analyses for the bioreactor.The dimensional and geometrical quality of additively manufactured parts must be increased to match industrial requirements before they can be incorporated to mass production. This work proposes a design for additive manufacturing strategy that uses the re-parameterization of part design to minimize shape deviations from cylindrical geometries. An analysis of shape deviations in the frequency domain is used to define a re-parameterization strategy, imposing a bi-univocal correspondence between verification parameters and design parameters. Then, the significance of variations in the process and design factors upon part quality is analyzed using design of experiments to determine the appropriate extension for modelling form deviation. Finally, local deviations are mapped for design parameters, and a new part design including local compensations is obtained. This strategy has been evaluated upon glossy surfaces manufactured in a Vero™ material by polymer jetting. The results of the proposed example showed a relevant improvement in dimensional quality, as well as a reduction of geometrical deviations, outperforming the results obtained with a conventional scaling compensation.The distribution of drivers' visual attention prior to diverting focus from the driving task is critical for safety. The object of this study is to investigate drivers' attention strategy before they occlude their vision for different durations under different driving scenarios. A total of 3 (scenarios) × 3 (durations) within-subjects design was applied. Twenty-three participants completed three durations of occlusion (0, 1, and 2 s) test drive in a motion-based driving simulator under three scenarios (urban, rural, motorway). Drivers' occlusion behaviour, driving behaviour, and visual behaviour in 6 s before occlusion was analyzed and compared. The results showed that drivers tended to slow down and increased their attention on driving task to keep safety in occlusion 2 s condition. The distribution of attention differed among different driving scenarios and occlusion durations. The aim of this article is to present a view of obesity in the Mediterranean context from an open, mainly socio-cultural perspective, but from different points of view (medical, nutritional), seeking points of convergence and elements that contribute to the understanding of and approach to the disease in the context of the Mediterranean diet. As a public health and a multidimensional social problem, obesity must be dealt with in a holistic, open, and cross-disciplinary manner to ensure that it can be understood coherently. The only way to keep the usefulness of the Mediterranean diet within desirable limits will be our societies' vitality and interest in rapidly adapting the Mediterranean diet to social change, thus providing valid answers to today's needs.Columbianadin (CBN), a natural coumarin isolated from Angelica decursiva, is reported to have numerous biological activities, including anticancer and platelet aggregation inhibiting properties. Here, we investigated CBN's anti-inflammatory effect in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell activation and deciphered the signaling process, which could be targeted by CBN as part of the mechanisms. Using a mouse model of LPS-induced acute liver inflammation, the CBN effects were examined by distinct histologic methods using trichrome, reticulin, and Weigert's resorcin fuchsin staining. The result showed that CBN decreased LPS-induced expressions of TNF-α, IL-1β, and iNOS and NO production in RAW 264.7 cells and mouse liver. CBN inhibited LPS-induced ERK and JNK phosphorylation, increased IκBα levels, and inhibited NF-κB p65 phosphorylation and its nuclear translocation. Application of inhibitors for ERK (PD98059) and JNK (SP600125) abolished the LPS-induced effect on NF-κB p65 phosphorylation, which indicated that ERK and JNK signaling pathways were involved in CBN-mediated inhibition of NF-κB activation. Treatment with CBN decreased hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation and increased HO-1 expression in RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, LPS-induced liver injury, as indicated by elevated serum levels of liver marker enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT)) and histopathological alterations, were reversed by CBN. This work demonstrates the utility of CBN against LPS-induced inflammation, liver injury, and oxidative stress by targeting JNK/ERK and NF-κB signaling pathways.Recently, researchers have focused their attention on the role of cognitive processes on eating habits and body weight changes. Few studies have examined the relationship between the first stages of overweight and executive functions (EFs), excluding obesity conditions. This study is aimed to detect the involvement of the EFs and their predictive role on body mass index (BMI) in a sample of healthy individuals from childhood to young adulthood with a cross-sectional design. One-hundred and sixty-six healthy students were recruited from different Italian public schools 46 children (age range 7-11), 50 adolescents (age range 15-18), 70 young adults (age range 19-30). BMI was used to evaluate body weight and different EFs tasks were used to assess the EFs domains of inhibition, updating and shifting. After adjusting BMI for age, a hierarchical multiple linear regression was carried out for each EFs task. Pearson's r correlations were reported for each of the age subgroups. Motor disinhibition was associated with greater BMI in the overall sample.
