CONV birds were 70 g heavier (p = 0.03) on day 21 and 140 g heavier (p = 0.007) on day 24 than SG. On day 7, CONV jejunum villus height and crypt depth were 22 and 7 μm greater (p ≤ 0.001), respectively, than SG. On day 24, ST ileum villus height was 95 μm shorter (p = 0.009) than C. IgA increased after day 17 for all birds and at day 21, CONV IgA was greater (p = 0.01) than SG. Although SG IgG was 344 μg/ml greater (p = 0.05) than CONV on day 7, CONV IgG increased with age (p less then 0.0001) to greater (p ≤ 0.03) concentrations than SG on day 21 and day 24 by 689 μg/ml and 1,474 μg/ml, respectively, while SG IgG remained at similar concentrations after day 13. Generally, a greater proportion of birds sham foraged as they aged (p less then 0.0001). A greater proportion of CONV tended to sit (p = 0.09) and fewer locomoted (p less then 0.0001) than SG as they aged. The results illustrate conventional and slow-growing broilers differ in their behavior, immunity, and response to Salmonella.This study was conducted in order to reveal the possibly lateralized processes in the avian nidopallium caudolaterale (NCL), a functional analogue to the mammalian prefrontal cortex, during a color discrimination task. Pigeons are known to be visually lateralized with a superiority of the left hemisphere/right eye for visual feature discriminations. While animals were working on a color discrimination task, we recorded single visuomotor neurons in left and right NCL. As expected, pigeons learned faster and responded more quickly when seeing the stimuli with their right eyes. Our electrophysiological recordings discovered several neuronal properties of NCL neurons that possibly contributed to this behavioral asymmetry. We found that the speed of stimulus encoding was identical between left and right NCL but action generation was different. Here, most left hemispheric NCL neurons reached their peak activities shortly before response execution. In contrast, the majority of right hemispheric neurons lagged behind and came too late to control the response. Thus, the left NCL dominated the animals' behavior not by a higher efficacy of encoding, but by being faster in monopolizing the operant response. A further asymmetry concerned the hemisphere-specific integration of input from the contra- and ipsilateral eye. The left NCL was able to integrate and process visual input from the ipsilateral eye to a higher degree and thus achieved a more bilateral representation of two visual fields. We combine these novel findings with those from previous publications to come up with a working hypothesis that could explain how hemispheric asymmetries for visual feature discrimination in birds are realized by a sequential buildup of lateralized neuronal response properties in the avian forebrain.While force-velocity-power characteristics of resistance exercises, such as bench presses and squats, have been well documented, little attention has been paid to load, force, and power-velocity relationships in exercises engaging core muscles. Given that power produced during lifting tasks or trunk rotations plays an important role in most sport-specific and daily life activities, its measurement should represent an important part of the test battery in both athletes and the general population. The aim of this scoping review was 1) to map the literature related to testing methods assessing core muscle strength and stability in sport and rehabilitation, chiefly studies with particular focus on force-velocity-power characteristics of exercises involving the use of core muscles, 2) and to identify gaps in existing studies and suggest further research in this field. The literature search was conducted on Cochrane Library databases, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and MEDLINE, which was completed by SpringerLink, sessing strength and power-related measures within cross-sectional and intervention studies. A better understanding of the power-force-velocity profiles during exercises with high demands on the core musculature has implications for designing sport training and rehabilitation programs for enhancement of athletes' performance and/or decrease their risk of back pain.Background Preoperative detection of high-/low-risk postoperative ventricular arrhythmia (POVA) patients using a noninvasive method is an important issue in the clinical setting. This study mainly aimed to determine the usefulness of several preoperative electrocardiographic (ECG) markers in the risk assessment of POVA with cardiac surgery. Method We enrolled 1024 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery, and a total of 823 patients were included in the study. Logistic regression analysis determined preoperative ECG markers. A new risk predicting model were developed to predict occurrence of POVA, and the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to validate this model. Results Of these, 337 patients experienced POVA, and 485 patients did not experience POVA in this retrospective study. Among 15 ECG markers, a univariate analysis found a strong association between POVA and preoperative VA, the R-wave in lead aVR, the QRS wave, index of cardiac electrophysiological balance (iCEB), QT interval corrected (QTc), Tpeak-Tend interval (Tpe) in lead V2, the J wave in the inferolateral leads, pathological Q wave, and SV1+RV5>35 mm. Multivariate analysis showed that a preoperative J wave [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 3.80; 95% CI 1.88-7.66; p 35 mm were significantly predicted POVAs. The aim of this work is to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of patients with insufficient diuretic response according to this new algorithm. Methods Prospective observational single centre study of consecutive patients with acute heart failure and congestive signs. Clinical evaluation, echocardiography and blood tests were performed. Diuretic naïve patients received 40 mg of intravenous furosemide. Patients on an oupatient diuretic regimen received 2 times the ambulatory dose. The diuresis volume was assessed 6 h after the first loop diuretic administration, and a spot urinary sample was taken after 2 h. Insufficient diuretic response was defined as natriuresis less then 70 mEq/L or diuresis volume less then 600 ml. Results From January 2020 to December 2021, 73 patients were included (59% males, median age 76 years). Of these, 21 patients (28.8%, 95%CI 18.4; 39.2) had an insufficient diuretic response. Diuresis volume was less then 600 ml in 13 patients (18.1%), and 12 patients (16.4%) had urinary sodium less then 70 mEq/L. These patients had lower systolic blood pressure, worse glomerular filtration rate, and higher aldosterone levels. Ambulatory furosemide dose was also higher. These patients required more frequently thiazides and inotropes during admission. Conclusion The diagnostic algorithm based on diuresis and natriuresis was able to detect up to 29% of patients with insufficient diuretic response, who showed some characteristics of more advanced disease.Cullins (CULs) are a core component of cullin-RING E3 ubiquitin ligases (CRLs), which regulate the degradation, function, and subcellular trafficking of proteins. CULs are post-translationally regulated through neddylation, a process that conjugates the ubiquitin-like modifier protein neural precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated protein 8 (NEDD8) to target cullins, as well as non-cullin proteins. Counteracting neddylation is the deneddylase, COP9 signalosome (CSN), which removes NEDD8 from target proteins. Recent comparative genomics studies revealed that CRLs and the CSN are highly conserved in Amoebozoa. A well-studied representative of Amoebozoa, the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, has been used for close to 100 years as a model organism for studying conserved cellular and developmental processes owing to its unique life cycle comprised of unicellular and multicellular phases. The organism is also recognized as an exceptional model system for studying cellular processes impacted by human diseases, including but not limited to, cancer and neurodegeneration. Recent work shows that the neddylation inhibitor, MLN4924 (Pevonedistat), inhibits growth and multicellular development in D. discoideum, which supports previous work that revealed the cullin interactome in D. discoideum and the roles of cullins and the CSN in regulating cellular and developmental processes during the D. discoideum life cycle. Here, we review the roles of cullins, neddylation, and the CSN in D. discoideum to guide future work on using this biomedical model system to further explore the evolutionarily conserved functions of cullins and neddylation.The therapeutic potential of 2-Methoxyestradiol (2ME2) is evident in cardiovascular disease. Our laboratory has previously demonstrated the mechanism involved in the 2ME2 regulation of angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R) in vitro. However, 2ME2 regulation of angiotensin receptors and its effects on blood pressure (BP) and resting heart rate (RHR) are uncertain. In this study, male and female Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats infused with angiotensin II (65 ng/min) and male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were surgically implanted with telemetric probes to continuously assess arterial BP and RHR. In both male and female WKY rats, 2ME2 treatment (20 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks) resulted in a significant reduction of Ang II-induced systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial BP. Moreover, significant weight loss and RHR were indicated in all groups. In a separate set of experiments, prolonged 2ME2 exposure in male SHR (20 mg/kg/day for 5 weeks) displayed a significant reduction in diastolic and mean arterial BP along with RHR. We also found downregulation of angiotensin receptors and angiotensinogen (AGT) in the kidney and liver and a reduction of plasma Ang II levels. Collectively, we demonstrate that 2ME2 attenuated BP and RHR in hypertensive rats involves downregulation of angiotensin receptors and body weight loss.This review was designed to discuss the role of thoracic-computed tomography (CT) in the evaluation and treatment of patients with ARDS and COVID-19 lung disease. Non-aerated lungs characterize the ARDS lungs, compared to normal lungs in the lowermost lung regions, compressive atelectasis. Heterogenous ARDS lungs have a tomographic vertical gradient characterized by progressively more aerated lung tissues from the gravity-dependent to gravity-independent lungs levels. The application of positive pressure ventilation to these heterogeneous ARDS lungs provides some areas of high shear stress, others of tidal hyperdistension or tidal recruitment that increases the chances of appearance and perpetuation of ventilator-induced lung injury. Other than helping to the correct diagnosis of ARDS, thoracic-computed tomography can help to the adjustments of PEEP, ideal tidal volume, and a better choice of patient position during invasive mechanical ventilation. Thoracic tomography can also help detect possible intra-thoracic complications and in the follow-up of the ARDS patients' evolution during their hospital stay.
