In contrast, these responses were reduced on the dsNPF treatment. Our results suggest that NPF plays an important role influencing caterpillar feeding behavior through regulating the taste neurons of the sensilla styloconica.
Micro-albuminuria is considered an early clinical sign of diabetes nephropathy, however, early decrease of glomerular filtration can be present years before the presence of microalbuminuria. In this study, we explored whether urinary epidermal growth factor (uEGF) might serve as an early marker of diabetes nephropathy compared to microalbuminuria in children and adolescents.

Children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (n = 158) and healthy controls (n = 40) were included in this study. Serum and urine samples were collected three times with an interval of at least one month to determine creatinine (serum and urine), epidermal growth factor and albumin (urine). Demographic data and routine lab values were extracted out of the electronic patient files.

uEGF was significantly lower in children with T1DM compared to healthy controls (p = 0.032). A relatively lower glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was associated with a decreased uEGF (p < 0.001). uEGF was independently associated with eGFR in a multivariate analysis.

This study provides evidence that uEGF can serve as an early marker of diabetes nephropathy in children and adolescents.

Feeding regimens alter circadian rhythms in peripheral tissues, but the mechanism is not understood. We aimed to study whether soluble factors, rather than neuronal-based communication, directly influence circadian rhythms in the liver, in response to a nutritional treatment in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients.

Cultured hepatocytes were treated with serum of insulin-treated T2D patients following either a three-meal diet (3Mdiet) or six-meal diet (6Mdiet) and the circadian expression of clock and metabolic genes was measured.

Serum of the 3Mdiet group led to increased amplitudes and daily mRNA levels of the positive limb of the circadian clock (Clock, Bmal1, Rorα). Previous studies have explored the association between noise exposure and risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, the results remain inconclusive.

PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched through December 2020, multivariate-adjusted relative risks (RRs) were pooled by using random-effects models. Subgroup analysis was also conducted stratifying by gender, study location, study design, source of noise, study quality, adjusting for smoking, drinking, body mass index, physical activity and shift work.

Five studies involving 44,698 participants and 5187 MetS cases were included. A summarized adjusted RR for the relationship between noise exposure and risk of MetS was 1.27 (95% CI, 1.02-1.60), and 1.11 (1.02-1.21) for blood pressure and 1.11 (1.06-1.17) for blood glucose. Subgroup analysis revealed that the pooled risk of MetS was statistically significant in all cohort studies (RR = 1.34, 95 %CI, 1.06-1.68), ambient/traffic noise (RR = 1.24, 95 %CI, 1.13-1.35) and occupational noise by removing one low quality study (RR = 2.21, 95 %CI, 1.41-3.44).

To examine whether visit to visit variability (VVV) of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) is associated with incident cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and all-cause mortality in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D).

A total of 4756 participants aged ≥30years entered the study in 2002-2005 and underwent two subsequent examinations in 2005-2008 and 2008-2011. FPG variability measures included standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), average real variability (ARV), and variability independent of mean (VIM). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the risk of incident CVD and all-cause mortality for each unit increase in different FPG variability measures.

During a median follow-up of 18.14years after baseline recruitment, 492 incident cardiovascular diseases and 338 all-cause mortality were recorded. Among individuals without T2D, the multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident CVD were 1.02 (1.01-1.04), 1.02 (1.01-1.04), 1.01 (1.00-1.02), and 1.01 (1.00-1.01) for SD, CV, ARV, and VIM, respectively (all P-values <0.05). Among individuals with T2D, the corresponding HRs and 95% CIs for all-cause mortality were 1.01 (1.00-1.02), 1.02 (1.01-1.03), 1.01 (1.00-1.02), and 1.01 (1.00-1.01), respectively (all P-values <0.05).

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of DOACs in the treatment of UEDVT.

Patients with an objectively confirmed acute UEDVT treated with DOACs were merged from prospective cohorts to a collaborative database. Primary study outcomes were recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) and major bleeding occurring during DOAC treatment.

Overall, 188 patients were included in the study mean age 52.4±20.4years, males 43.6%, patients with active cancer 29.2%. Twenty-nine percent of patients had 2 or more risk factors for VTE, 33.0% had catheter-related or pacemaker-related UEDVT. In 13.8% of patients, DOACs were started one month after UEDVT diagnosis or later. Active cancer was an independent predictor for delayed initiation of DOACs (OR 8.1, 95% CI 3.0-22.2). Mean duration of treatment with DOACs was 5.1±2.8months. During treatment with DOACs, recurrent VTE occurred in 0.9 per 100 patient-year, major bleeding in 1.7 and all-cause deaths in 6.0 per 100 patient-year. No fatal bleeding or fatal VTE recurrence were observed. During 232.1 patient-years of follow-up after DOAC withdrawal, recurrent VTE occurred in 3.0 per 100 patient-year. The 2019 ESC categories for risk of VTE recurrences were able to discriminate patient groups at different risk of events in the on and off-treatment periods.

Few studies have explored the associations between HRQoL and incident CVD. We explored the associations between baseline HRQoL and incident and fatal CVD in community-dwelling older people in Australia and the United States.

Longitudinal study using ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial data. This includes 19,106 individuals aged 65-98years, initially free of CVD, dementia, or disability, and followed between March 2010 and June 2017. The physical (PCS) and mental component scores (MCS) of HRQoL were assessed using the SF-12 questionnaire. Incident major adverse CVD events included fatal CVD (death due to atherothrombotic CVD), hospitalizations for heart failure, myocardial infarction or stroke. Analyses were performed using Cox proportional-hazard regression.

Over a median 4.7 follow-up years, there were 922 incident CVD events, 203 fatal CVD events, 171 hospitalizations for heart failure, 355 fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction and 403 fatal or nonfatal strokes.
