Visiting faculties and students from both universities were exposed to different livestock systems, varying dynamics at the human-livestock-wildlife interface, different teaching systems, and a veterinary profession with a different culture and focus than that in their own country. Students and faculty learned about the relative social and economic importance of different types of animal production in each country and their influence on veterinary education priorities. Partnership outcomes include a continuing professional development course at SUA for private and public sector veterinarians and a clinical club to expose students at both colleges to a broader range of clinical cases and knowledge.This article introduces the Special Issue of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME) on the OIE Veterinary Education Establishment Twinning Programme. It provides some background on the origins of the program, information on its implementation, and some of the outcomes and benefits already identified.Content expertise in basic science and clinical disciplines does not assure proficiency in teaching. Faculty development to improve teaching and learning is essential for the advancement of veterinary education. The Consortium of West Region Colleges of Veterinary Medicine established the Regional Teaching Academy (RTA) with the focus of "Making Teaching Matter." The objective of the RTA's first effort, the Faculty Development Initiative (FDI), was to develop a multi-institutional faculty development program for veterinary educators to learn about and integrate effective teaching methods. In 2016, the Veterinary Educator Teaching and Scholarship (VETS) program was piloted at Oregon State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. This article uses a case study approach to program evaluation of the VETS program. We describe the VETS program, participants' perceptions, participants' teaching method integration, and lessons learned. A modified Kirkpatrick Model (MKM) was used to categorize program outcomes and impact. Quantitative data are presented as descriptive statistics, and qualitative data are presented as the themes that emerged from participant survey comments and post-program focus groups. Results indicated outcomes and impacts that included participants' perceptions of the program, changes in participant attitude toward teaching and learning, an increase in the knowledge level of participants, self-reported changes in participant behaviors, and changes in practices and structure at the college level. Lessons learned indicate that the following are essential for program success (1) providing institutional and financial support; (2) creating a community of practice (COP) of faculty development facilitators, and (3) developing a program that addresses the needs of faculty and member institutions.A World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Veterinary Education Twinning Project was established between the veterinary schools at Nong Lam University (NLU) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and the University of Queensland, Gatton, Australia, as part of the scheme established to promote high-quality veterinary services through improved veterinary education. Included in the partnership's primary aims were building the capacity of veterinary teaching staff with respect to general teaching practice and also in response to identified deficiency areas, and to develop outcome assessment processes. One challenge facing the project was the different approaches and experiences of teaching and learning for the faculty and students between the two widely different historical and cultural contexts of Australia and Vietnam. The project enhanced the pedagogy capability in NLU faculty and introduced student-focused approaches to teaching. The NLU staff involved in the project strongly embraced a student-centered approach to learning and case-based teaching in particular, adopting these strategies in their own teaching. This functional specialization depends on a unique protein composition that defines NE identity and must be both established and actively maintained. The NE undergoes extensive remodeling in interphase and mitosis, so mechanisms that seal NE holes and protect its unique composition are critical for maintaining its functions. New evidence shows that closure of NE holes relies on regulated de novo lipid synthesis, providing a link between lipid metabolism and generating and maintaining NE identity. Here, we review regulation of the lipid bilayers of the NE and suggest ways to generate lipid asymmetry across the NE despite its direct continuity with the ER. We also discuss the elusive mechanism of membrane fusion during nuclear pore complex (NPC) biogenesis. We propose a model in which NPC biogenesis is carefully controlled to ensure that a permeability barrier has been established before membrane fusion, thereby avoiding a major threat to compartmentalization.Background There is a lack of consensus for optimal management of patients with foot drop due to acute lumbar disc herniation (LDH) with lumbar radiculopathy (LR), which is a clinical scenario that may be encountered by physical therapists. Consequently, it is important to explore physical therapists' referral practice patterns for surgical consult. Currently, physical therapist referral patterns for surgical consult in this patient population are unknown. Objectives To describe physical therapist referral patterns for immediate neurosurgical consult in patients with foot drop due to suspected acute LDH with LR. Design Cross-sectional descriptive research design using an electronic, internet-based survey that utilized two clinical vignettes. link2 Method An electronic survey was developed by an expert peer review panel. Survey participants were licensed physical therapists in the United States and members of the Orthopedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. Results Of the individuals receiving the survey invitation, 2172 completed the survey. Depending on the severity of foot drop, 34-61% were likely to refer for immediate neurosurgical consult. Presence of imaging to confirm suspected clinical diagnosis slightly affected the likelihood of referral (4-12% increase) for immediate neurosurgical consult. Conclusion In patients with foot drop due to suspected acute LDH with LR, this study found that physical therapist referral patterns for immediate neurosurgical consult varied and are likely influenced by the severity of weakness and availability of MRI findings. Further research regarding the optimal management of this patient population and potential reasons for variation in practice is warranted.Autophagy is a conserved vacuole/lysosome-mediated degradation pathway for clearing and recycling cellular components including cytosol, macromolecules, and dysfunctional organelles. In recent years, autophagy has emerged to play important roles in plant-pathogen interactions. It acts as an antiviral defense mechanism in plants. Moreover, increasing evidence shows that plant viruses can manipulate, hijack, or even exploit the autophagy pathway to promote pathogenesis, demonstrating the pivotal role of autophagy in the evolutionary arms race between hosts and viruses. In this review, we discuss recent findings about the antiviral and proviral roles of autophagy in plant-virus interactions. Please see http//www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates.a rapid and simple liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) using a QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) clean-up for a variety of foods and dietary supplements (DS). QuEChERS is widely used in extraction or clean-up procedures to eliminate interference of matrices such as sugars, organic acids, lipids, and fatty acids. The samples were categorised into three types, and various pretreatment methods were compared for each type. In all types, the QuEChERS was superior and selected as the final pretreatment method. The optimised method was validated for specificity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), linearity, recovery, precision and accuracy. All of the validation results met the requirements of the international guidelines for all types of samples. The validated method was applied to 30 commercial food samples, CBD was detected in 17 samples, with 2 of them detected below the LOQ level and the rest detected in a range of 70 μg/kg to 31305 mg/kg (3.1%, w/w). Meanwhile, THC was detected in 14 samples; 2 of them were detected below the LOQ level and the rest detected in a 0.08-98.62 μg/g range. These results indicated that the validated method can be successfully applied for the determination of cannabinoids in a variety of samples. Furthermore, it will be useful for controlling the illegal distribution of cannabinoids.Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) afflicts women at a younger age than other breast cancers and is associated with a worse clinical outcome. This poor clinical outcome is attributed to a lack of defined targets and patient-to-patient heterogeneity in target antigens and immune responses. To address such heterogeneity, we tested the efficacy of a personalized vaccination approach for the treatment of TNBC using the 4T1 murine TNBC model. We isolated tumor membrane vesicles (TMVs) from homogenized 4T1 tumor tissue and incorporated glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored forms of the immunostimulatory B7-1 (CD80) and IL-12 molecules onto these TMVs to make a TMV vaccine. Tumor-bearing mice were then administered with the TMV vaccine either alone or in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors. We show that TMV-based vaccine immunotherapy in combination with anti-CTLA-4 mAb treatment upregulated immunomodulatory cytokines in the plasma, significantly improved survival, and reduced pulmonary metastasis in mice compared to either therapy alone. The depletion of CD8+ T cells, but not CD4+ T cells, resulted in the loss of efficacy. This suggests that the vaccine acts via tumor-specific CD8+ T cell immunity. These results suggest TMV vaccine immunotherapy as a potential enhancer of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies for metastatic triple-negative breast cancer.The conversion of renewable resources into value-added products such as bioenergy is one of the growing concerns of bioeconomy strategy. Within this concept, assessing the proper combination of local wastes has major importance. link3 This study set out to assess the feasibility of using spent tea waste as a single and co-substrate on anaerobic digestion and to explore the influence of the amount of microorganisms on the digester performance. For this purpose, biomethane potentials tests were conducted for seven different mixing ratios of spent tea waste and cow manure on a mass basis. The reactors operated under mesophilic conditions for 20 days with two inoculum/substrate ratios. The results revealed that using spent tea waste as a co-substrate did not reveal a significant effect on biomethane production in the reactors. Contrarily, the amount of inoculum had a remarkable effect on biomethane production, resulted in an increase in methane production between 28 and 32%. While the biomethane yields were in the range of 129-138 mLN CH4 gVS -1 for the co-digesters operated with inoculum/substrate ratio of 1, the range was 165-181 mLN CH4 gVS -1 for the co-digesters operated with inoculum/substrate ratio of 2.
