Traditionally, psychopathy research has focused on assessing men with the Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R). Research on women with other assessment tools is scarce. The objective of this study is to evaluate psychopathy, using various tools, in a sample with both women and men. The study involved 204 inmates (mean age (DS) = 40.93 (11.8)), 28 women (13.7%), in the Pereiro de Aguiar penitentiary (Ourense). Sociodemographic, substance use, and criminal variables were collected, and all were evaluated with the following tools PCL-R, Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP), and the International Personality Disorder Examination. In this sample, when assessed with the PCL-R, males obtained significantly higher scores on facet 4, which measures antisocial behaviour. Women obtained significantly higher scores on the Self domain in the CAPP, measuring narcissism. No symptom or item was able to clearly discriminate psychopathic women from psychopathic men in a Support Vector Machine model. The construct of psychopathy is similar for women and men in this representative penitentiary sample. Women showed higher scores for narcissism and men for antisociality. It is better to combine the PCL-R with another tool such as the CAPP to assess these psychopathological differences. No symptom or item has a score that can be recommended as a method for discriminating psychopathic women from psychopathic men.The objective of the study was to analyze the relationship between individual socioeconomic characteristics and cigarette consumption in Spain. The sample consisted of 19,931 individuals aged 15 or older who completed the European Health Interview Survey for Spain (EHSS-2014). Variables prevalence and intensity of cigarette consumption. Multivariate ordered logistic regression analysis was performed with the following socioeconomic variables social classes, educational attainment, main activity, economic situation and, for the working population, the activity sector. Other control variables were sociodemographic variables and healthy lifestyle habits (physical exercise, diet and alcohol consumption). The factors that relate to greater prevalence are lower social class, not having university studies, being unemployed, having worse economic situation and working in hospitality industry. On the other hand, the variables related to higher intensity of cigarette consumption of the smoking population are lower social class, not having university studies, and being neither a student nor on a permanent contract. Regarding control variables, those regressors associated with a higher prevalence and intensity of cigarette consumption are being male, being aged between 36 and 65, being divorced, having fewer children at home and having worse lifestyle habits.Preclinical evidence suggests that endogenous midkine could play a key modulatory role on the neurotoxic and addictive effects of different kinds of drugs of abuse, including psychostimulants. However, this hypothesis has not yet been explored in humans. As a first approach to progress in this knowledge, we have comparatively studied plasma midkine levels in 75 patients with cocaine use disorder under abstinence and 26 control subjects matched for sex, age and body mass index. Patients were further segmented into early-abstinent (up to one month of abstinence, n = 30) and late-abstinent (more than one month of abstinence, n = 45). Midkine levels were quantified in plasma samples of all the participants by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Early-abstinent patients exhibited a 60% increase of midkine plasma concentration in comparison with the controls. This elevation tended to normalize upon the progression of abstinence. The results obtained demonstrate that peripheral midkine levels are closely related to cocaine use and are consistent with the idea that this cytokine could play a protective role by limiting the biological activity of psychostimulants.Substance use disorders (SUD) treatment centers are an optimal setting for delivering smoking cessation interventions (SCI). This study aimed to examine the adoption of SCI in SUD treatment centers in Catalonia (Spain) as well as to assess their managers' views on the appropriateness and feasibility of providing SCI. Managers directly in charge of SUD treatment centers (n = 57) answered a 30-item on-line questionnaire. Data was obtained of 50 centers (87.7% response rate). Forty-six per cent of the centers provided some kind of SCI, but only 4.8% of the new patients were treated for smoking cessation. Managers reported that 73.3% of mental health professionals working in SUD centers had not been trained in SCI. selleck chemicals Sixty-four per cent of managers agreed that all health professionals should deliver SCI. Those centers offering SCI attended more patients and were more likely to have professionals trained in SCI than those not offering SCI. The implementation of SCI in SUD treatment centers in Catalonia was suboptimal. Continuing education and training should be provided for all health professionals working in SUD centers. Not systematically delivering SCI to patients in treatment for other SUD means missing opportunities to reduce health and economic costs while perpetuating a smoking culture.Mitochondrial complex I is the main site for electron transfer to the respiratory chain and generates much of the proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Complex I is composed of two arms, which form a conserved L-shape. We report the structures of the intact, 47-subunit mitochondrial complex I from Arabidopsis thaliana and the 51-subunit complex I from the green alga Polytomella sp., both at around 2.9 Å resolution. In both complexes, a heterotrimeric γ-carbonic anhydrase domain is attached to the membrane arm on the matrix side. Two states are resolved in A. thaliana complex I, with different angles between the two arms and different conformations of the ND1 (NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1) loop near the quinol binding site. The angle appears to depend on a bridge domain, which links the peripheral arm to the membrane arm and includes an unusual ferredoxin. We propose that the bridge domain participates in regulating the activity of plant complex I.Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is essential for eukaryotic cells, whereas bacterial homologs play a role under stresses and in pathogenesis. Identifying species-specific Hsp90 inhibitors is challenging because Hsp90 is evolutionarily conserved. We found that a cyclic lipopeptide surfactin inhibits the ATPase activity of Hsp90 from the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus (S. elongatus) PCC 7942 but does not inhibit Escherichia coli (E. coli), yeast and human Hsp90s. Molecular docking simulations indicated that surfactin could bind to the N-terminal dimerization interface of the cyanobacterial Hsp90 in the ATP- and ADP-bound states, which provided molecular insights into the species-selective inhibition. The data suggest that surfactin inhibits a rate-limiting conformational change of S. elongatus Hsp90 in the ATP hydrolysis. Surfactin also inhibited the interaction of the cyanobacterial Hsp90 with a model substrate, and suppressed S. elongatus growth under heat stress, but not that of E. coli. Surfactin did not show significant cellular toxicity toward mammalian cells. These results indicate that surfactin inhibits the cellular function of Hsp90 specifically in the cyanobacterium. The present study shows that a cyclic peptide has a great specificity to interact with a specific homolog of a highly conserved protein family.Studies have yielded inconsistent evidence for an association between long-term average wind turbine sound pressure level (SPL) and disturbed sleep. Transient changes in sleep may be more susceptible to short-term variations in wind turbine SPL throughout the sleep period time. We analyzed sleep actigraphy data (subject sleep nights=2094, males=151, females=192) in 10 min intervals time-synchronized to wind turbine supervisory control and data acquisition. Calculated indoor wind turbine SPL was considered after adjusting for turbine rotor speed and closed/open bedroom windows. Maximum calculated nightly average wind turbine SPL reached 44.7 dBA (mean=32.9, SD=6.4) outdoors, and 31.4 dBA (mean=12.5, SD=8.3) indoors. Wind turbine SPL in 10 min intervals, and nightly averages, were not statistically associated with actigraphy outcomes. However, the variability in wind turbine SPL due to changes in wind turbine operation across the sleep period time, as measured by the difference between the 10 min SPL and the nightly average SPL (∆SPL), was statistically related to awakenings (p=0.028) and motility (p=0.015) rates. These diminutive differences translate to less than 1 min of additional awake and motility time for a 5 dBA increase over a 450 min sleep period time. Overall results showed that wind turbine SPL below 45 dBA was not associated with any consequential changes in actigraphy-measured sleep. Observations based on ∆SPL provided some indication that a more sensitive assessment of sleep may be one that considers variations in wind turbine SPL throughout the sleep period time.ACE has a significant role in the angiogenesis of ovarian endothelium and the resumption of meiosis and folicular growth. However, there is no any study concerning ACE polymorphism and UI. The main aim of this study is that both identify ACE polymorphism and measure the serum ACE, AMH and INHB levels in UI patients and controls in Turkish population. 47 UI patients and 41 controls were involved in this study. To determine the ACE polymorphisms, DNA isolation and PCR were performed. Then, serum ACE, AMH and INHB levels were measured spectrophotometrically. Patients with UI had significantly higher serum INHB levels compared with controls (p  less then  0.05). Serum ACE levels were decreased, compared to controls, however the decrease were not significant. Serum AMH levels did not significantly differ from controls. When the relationship were analyzed between ACE I/D polymorphism and infertility risk, and ID genotype were chosen as reference, it was found to be 2.33 times more risk of UI that the women have DD genotype (DD vs. ID odds ratio = 2.33, 95% confidence interval (0,88-6,19); p = 0,086). This finding indicates that DD genotype may be high risk for UI. Further studies are warranted to confirm this finding, especially with a larger population.Chronic short sleep (CSS) is prevalent in modern societies and has been proposed as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). In support, short-term sleep loss acutely increases levels of amyloid β (Aβ) and tau in wild type (WT) mice and humans, and sleep disturbances predict cognitive decline in older adults. We have shown that CSS induces injury to and loss of locus coeruleus neurons (LCn), neurons with heightened susceptibility in AD. Yet whether CSS during young adulthood drives lasting Aβ and/or tau changes and/or neural injury later in life in the absence of genetic risk for AD has not been established. Here we examined the impact of CSS exposure in young adult WT mice on late-in-life Aβ and tau changes and neural responses in two AD-vulnerable neuronal groups, LCn and hippocampal CA1 neurons. Twelve months following CSS exposure, CSS-exposed mice evidenced reductions in CA1 neuron counts and volume, spatial memory deficits, CA1 glial activation, and loss of LCn. Aβ42 and hyperphosphorylated tau were increased in the CA1; however, amyloid plaques and tau tangles were not observed.
