Self-rated physical health (SRPH) has been extensively used to assess health status. In this study, we examine how youth living in the slums of Kampala perceive their physical health and the psychosocial correlates of poor health. Cross-sectional data from the 2014 Kampala Youth Survey (N = 1,134) of youth ages 12-18 years was used to conduct the analyses. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine associations between SRPH, demographic and psychosocial characteristics. Overall, 72% of youth rated their health as 'excellent' or 'good.' Poor SRPH was associated with older age and lower education, but not with sex. Also, orphans (OR = 2.03; 95%CI1.51-2.72), those who lived on the streets (OR=3.09; 95%CI2.30-4.15), who did not have electricity (OR = 2.83;95%CI2.12-3.78), who initiated alcohol use early (OR = 2.08; 95%CI1.47-2.94), who frequently get drunk (OR = 5.67; 95%CI2.69-11.96), who were HIV positive (OR = 2.18; 95%CI1.47-3.23), who had been injured due to their drinking (OR = 2.09; 95%CI1.44-3.03), who thought about hurting themselves (OR = 2.09; 95%CI1.60-2.73), and those who often felt lonely (OR = 2.54; 95%CI1.61-4.02) had higher odds of poor SRPH compared to their peers without these characteristics. Poor SRPH may serve as a marker for multiple health-risk behaviors and severe health disparities among youth in vulnerable and resource-limited settings.The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of repeated bouts of shiftwork on lower extremity maximal and rapid strength and reaction time in career firefighters. Thirty-five firefighters (3 females; 34.3 ± 9.1 years) performed a psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) and reactive maximal isometric strength assessment prior to and following a full shift rotation (three 24-hr on-off shifts). Reaction time (RT), maximal, absolute and normalised rapid strength (50, 100, 150, 200 ms), and PVT measures were assessed on-site. Separate linear regression models were used to evaluate the POST-PRE change in variables adjusted for BMI, age, sleep, and call duration. Early (50 ms) absolute rapid strength was the only variable significantly reduced (-25.9%; p = 0.031) following the full shift rotation. Our findings indicate that early rapid strength may be a sensitive measure in detecting work-related fatigue, despite minimal changes in sleep between work and non-work nights and a low call duration. A comprehensive search of pertinent literature was performed through PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect. The focused question that was addressed was, "What are the potential applications of KT in the craniomaxillofacial region?". The preliminary search identified 52 studies. Once duplicates were removed, the remaining 43 titles/abstracts were screened, where 9 studies were excluded and the remaining 34 were assessed. Three additional studies were obtained through reference review of the retrieved articles. More than one million breast augmentation procedures using silicone breast implants (SBI) have been performed worldwide. Adverse events of SBI include local complications such as pain, swelling, redness, infections, capsular contracture, implant rupture, and gel-bleed. Furthermore, patients experience systemic symptoms such as chronic fatigue, arthralgias, myalgias, pyrexia, sicca, and cognitive dysfunction. These symptoms received different names such as autoimmune/autoinflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) due to silicone incompatibility syndrome and breast implant illness (BII). Because of chronic immune activation, BII/ASIA, allergies, autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, and finally lymphomas may develop in SBI patients.

Causality for SBI-related BII/ASIA is reviewed. To address the role of silicone implants in promoting causality, we utilized the Bradford Hill criteria, with results highlighted in this article.

Using data derived from patients with BII/ASIA and from other medically implanted devices, there appears to be clear pathogenic relationship between SBI and BII/ASIA. Breast implants cause characteristic systemic reactions in certain women, leading to symptoms of sufficient severity to warrant device removal. The morbidity suffered is variable. SBI removal resolves the symptoms in most women, and removal is the most effective treatment.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common among patients with COVID-19. However, AKI incidence may increase when COVID-19 patients develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors of AKI, need for kidney replacement therapy (KRT), and mortality rate among COVID-19 patients with and without ARDS from the first wave of COVID-19.

The databases MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched using relevant keywords. Only articles available in English published between December 1, 2019, and November 1, 2020, were included. Studies that included AKI in COVID-19 patients with or without ARDS were included. Meta-analyses were conducted using random-effects models.

Out of 618 studies identified and screened, 31 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 27,500 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were included. Here, Cr(VI) removal capacity of a Cr(VI)-resistant bacterium isolated from activated sludge was investigated. Based on its physio-biochemical attributes and 16S rDNA sequence analysis, the strain was identified as Bacillus cereus ZY-2009. It grew normally in the media containing 10-100 mg/L Cr(VI), indicating its high resistance to Cr(VI). Under the optimal conditions of pH 7.0, inoculation amount 10%, and temperature 30°C, Cr(VI) was effectively removed, with a removal rate of ∼80%. Co-existing Fe3+ and Cu2+ greatly increased Cr(VI) removal, but Cd2+ showed significant inhibition. Cr(VI) was removed mainly via enzyme-mediated bioreduction but not biosorption. Cr(VI) was reduced by different cell fractions (i.e. extracellular secretions, cytoplasm, and cell envelope), implying that Cr(VI) can be reduced both extracellularly and intracellularly. To prevent metabolic syndrome in pre-menopausal married women with jobs, lifestyle modifications such as mitigating obesity and reducing alcohol consumption with aging are necessary.Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a One Health problem underpinned by complex drivers and behaviours. This is particularly so in low - and middle-income countries (LMICs), where social and systemic factors fuel (mis)use and drive AMR. Behavioural change around antimicrobial use could safeguard both existing and future treatments. However, changing behaviour necessitates engaging with people to understand their experiences. This publication describes a knowledge-exchange cluster of six LMIC-based projects who co-designed and answered a series of research questions around the usage of Community Engagement (CE) within AMR. Findings suggest that CE can facilitate AMR behaviour change, specifically in LMICs, because it is a contextualised approach which supports communities to develop locally meaningful solutions. However, current CE interventions focus on human aspects, and demand-side drivers, of AMR. Our cluster suggests that broader attention should be paid to AMR as a One Health issue. The popularity of mixed methods approaches within existing CE for AMR interventions suggests there is interdisciplinary interest in the uptake of CE.
