The 3 Biggest Disasters In Audi G28 The Audi G28's 3 Biggest Disasters In History
How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If new audi key has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're an Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your car. replacement car key audi 's a vital component of the Audi's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This part is common across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
