The VARR in ozonated water was dependent on water temperature, indicating that the microbial activity of BAC did not adapt to low water temperature. The Arrhenius equation was applied to reveal the relationship between VARR and water temperature. The actual ammonium removal performance of a full-scale BAC filter was predicted. VARR is useful for water engineers to reexamine the loading and filter depth of BAC filters.
Self‑reported alcohol intake is an inaccurate measure, especially in heavy drinkers. The simple 4‑item CAGE questionnaire assessing alcohol use disorder was found to be positively associated with alcohol consumption and mortality.
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between alcohol use disorder assessed with the CAGE questionnaire and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a population‑based Polish sample.
A cohort study with an 11‑year follow‑up was conducted. #link# A random sample of 10 728 residents of Kraków aged 45 to 69 years completed baseline examination, including the CAGE questionnaire. Information on new cases of CVD was obtained from further questionnaires and confirmed by clinical diagnosis. Data on mortality and causes of death were obtained from the local registry, the Central Statistical Office, and the participants' families. The effect of the CAGE score on the risk of CVD was assessed using Cox proportional hazard models.
The analysis included 7112 individuals who completed the CAGE questionnaire and were free of CVD at baseline. No alcohol use disorder was reported in 94% of the participants. There was a positive association between the CAGE score and the risk of CVD. In the fully adjusted model, compared with participants scoring 0, the hazard ratios among those scoring 3 and 4 points were 2.19 (95% CI, 1.43-3.37) and 2.79 (95% CI, 1.65-4.73), respectively. The association was somewhat stronger for fatal CVD.
We found a strong, graded association between the CAGE score and the risk of CVD incidence, which was independent of other risk factors for CVD. The CAGE questionnaire might be considered as an additional tool to identify individuals at high risk of CVD.

The weekend effect in Polish patients with myocardial infarction (MI) treated in the current network of catheterization laboratories is poorly understood.
We sought to investigate long‑term prognosis of patients with MI admitted at weekends or public holidays (NWDs) and on working days (WDs).
We enrolled 865 patients with MI hospitalized between 2012 and 2017. The long‑term mortality within the median (IQR) time of 68.5 (36.7-78.4) months was determined in 223 patients (25.8%) admitted on NWDs and in 642 (74.2%) on WDs.
Patients admitted on NWDs more often had ST‑segment elevation MI (41.3% vs 30.8%; P = 0.005), left anterior descending artery as an infarct‑related artery (38.1% vs 30.2%; P = 0.031) and incomplete reperfusion expressed as Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction flow grade 0/1 following primary angioplasty (6.8% vs 1.6%; P <0.001) as compared with those hospitalized on WDs. Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) occurred less often on NWDs (4% vs 9%, P = 0.019). The all‑cause long‑term mortality was higher in NWD patients as compared with those admitted on WDs (36.3% vs 28.4%; P = 0.037). By the Cox proportional hazards model with time‑dependent covariates, MI on NWDs (hazard ratio, 1.027; 95% CI, 1.022-1.032; P <0.001) but not MINOCA (hazard ratio, 0.971; 95% CI, 0.595-1.583; P = 0.91) was independently associated with long‑term mortality.
Patients hospitalized on NWDs as compared with those admitted on WDs had a larger ischemic territory and more often had transmural MI with incomplete epicardial reperfusion, which resulted in a higher long‑term mortality. The latter outcome was not influenced by MINOCA.

Oxidative stress has been proposed as one of the factors concurring in the pathophysiology of autoimmune thyroid diseases. Reactive oxygen species are the main expression of oxidative stress in biological systems, and their production can overcome antioxidant defenses ultimately leading to cell damage, apoptosis, and death. The present review was aimed at describing the state of the art of the relationships between oxidative stress and autoimmune thyroiditis. The most used biomarkers of oxidative stress and their correlation with thyroid function are reported.
We conducted a search of the literature in the English language starting from 2000, using the following search terms "Hashimoto thyroiditis," "autoimmune thyroiditis," "hypothyroidism," "hyperthyroidism," "oxidative stress," "oxidants," "antioxidant," "advanced glycation end products." Both clinical studies and animal models were evaluated.
Data form clinical studies clearly indicate that the balance between oxidants and antioxidants is shifted tosupplements may provide protection from autoimmunity, opening new perspectives in the development of more tailored therapies.Breast cancer is the second most frequent type of cancer worldwide and the most commonly occurring malignancy in women, and its incidence is increasing in most developed and developing countries. There is growing evidence that lifestyle factors, in particular diet may be associated with higher Breast Cancer risk. Some evidence exists regarding the benefit of Mediterranean Diet on reduced risk of Breast Cancer in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The protective effect of the Mediterranean Diet against the risk of Breast Cancer, is primarily due to principal foods of this nutritional pattern. The principal components of the Mediterranean Diet, such as fruits and vegetables, olive oil, fish and red wine have important antioxidants properties due to their high content of substances like polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids and fibers, along with a favourable fatty acid profile, that in turn could reduce the risk of Breast Cancer. Considering the severity of breast cancer and the increasing incidence in the world, there is an increasing interest in promoting prevention strategies in order to reduce the incidence. The aim of this paper is to provide a general overview of the current evidence on the relationship between Breast Cancer and Mediterranean Diet, in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and to emphasize the potential role of Mediterranean Diet as an effective tool in primary prevention. The possible molecular mechanisms underlying this association will be also pointed out.
In the next future, dermatologists, endocrinologist and physicians may cope with the impact of extent SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection over chronic inflammatory skin diseases and their treatment. COVID-19 pandemic obliged many countries to impose social restrictions, resulting in the need to adapt daily lifestyle habits and working activities. link2 These changes have drastically reduced physical activity and social interactions, with the possible increase of anxiety, eating disorders and weight gain.
We searched for relevant studies (trials, real-life studies and case reports, meta-analysis, pooled data analysis, reviews) on endocrine disorders and inflammatory skin diseases. The database used was PubMed. read more included were those published in the English language between January 1, 2018 and May 5, 2020.
Several studies have been previously showed the association of overweight and obesity, with the metabolic syndrome and insulin-resistance. It has been demonstrated how these conditions correlate with th9 outbreak on inflammatory skin disorders, due to the lifestyle changes. In such context this review considers how a multidisciplinary approach, involving dermatologists, nutritionists and endocrinologists, may lead to a better management of dermatologic patients.
Despite the abundance of studies on the beneficial effects of a fiber rich diet as well as polyphenols deriving from Citrus fruits on postprandial serum glucose and insulin, clinical evidences on their synergic effects on healthy subjects have never been published. We aimed to investigate the feasibility of a new dietary approach in controlling glucose and insulin response at breakfast time by testing a brioche enriched with wheat bran and bergamot fiber.
We enrolled 11 healthy volunteers in a cross-over study. Participants consumed a classic brioche at breakfast and our functional brioche, containing wheat bran and bergamot fiber, on another day. Vital functions, biochemical parameters (including glucose and insulin), anthropometric measurements as well as resting energy expenditure and fat oxidation were evaluated before and after the intake of both meals.
The mean age was ~25 years. The mean BMI was 23.5 kg/m2. The consumption of the functional brioche reduced the glucose CMAX(0-120 min) by ~6% and pbetic patients.
Dysphagic patients are not always able to meet their energy, micro and macronutrients needs for various causes and therefore are at high risk of malnutrition. link3 The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness on satisfaction of the meal (by a 10-cm visuanalogical scale), food intake (by visual estimation of food waste), nutritional status (anthropometric measures, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), vitamin D, B12, folic acid), functional (handgrip) and blood chemistry metabolic parameters of a tailored texturemodified sous-vide cooking meals (TTMSVC), well balanced in macro and micronutrients, in elderly women suffering from oropharyngeal dysphagia at long-term care facilities.
A 12-week intervention study was conducted on female elderly subjects affected by oropharyngeal dysphagia of level 3-5. The treated group received TTMSVC with the consistencies standardized using viscosimeter (5000-10000mP/s). The control group maintained pureed hospital diet.
50 subjects, 25 in treatment group and 25 in control group, with mean ± SD age 89.12±4.18 and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) 20.58±1.63 were enrolled. The treatment and control groups were similar at baseline. The changes over time between the two groups showed significant differences for food intake, meal appreciation, Body Mass Index (BMI), calf circumference, arm circumference, MNA, prealbumin, albumin, folic acid, vitamin D, ionized calcium, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), (Tumor Necrosis Factor) TNF alpha, handgrip. Significant positive correlations were observed in the treatment group between the meal appreciation and prealbumin and vitamin D.
This study demonstrated that elderly dysphagic women at long-term care facilities can eat better and increase nutritional status by eating 12-week tailored appealing TTMSVC.
