The recent development of extended reality technology has attracted interest in medicine. We explored the use of patient-specific virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) temporal bone models in anatomical teaching, pre-operative surgical planning and intra-operative surgical referencing.

VR and MR temporal bone models were created and visualized on head-mounted display (HMD) and MR headset respectively, by a novel webservice that allows users to convert computed tomography images to VR and MR images without specific knowledge of programming. Eleven otorhinolaryngology trainees and specialists were asked to manipulate the healthy VR temporal bone model and to assess its validity by filling out a questionnaire. Additionally, VR and MR pathological models of petrous apex cholesteatoma were utilized for surgical planning pre-operatively and for referring to the anatomy during the surgery.

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is a severe encephalopathy associated with acute viral infection. While most ANE cases are sporadic, pathogenic variants in the gene RAN binding protein 2 (RANBP2) have been identified as a major cause of familial or recurrent ANE (ANE1). Although sporadic ANE predominantly affects Asian children, ANE1 is very rare in east Asia.

A 1-year-7-month-old boy, born to unrelated Japanese parents, presented with a seizure and impaired consciousness after 3 days of fever. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a characteristic involvement of the bilateral thalami, external capsules, insular cortices, and brainstem, suggesting ANE. He received intravenous steroids. Two months later, he had another episode of acute encephalopathy during respiratory syncytial virus infection, from which he recovered relatively well. The recurrent encephalopathic episodes and the characteristic MRI suggested ANE1. Genetic analyses revealed two variants a rare heterozygous missense variant predisposition to familial or recurrent ANE in the Asian population.
To present a summary of the 2021 version of the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines on management of male urethral stricture disease.

The panel performed a literature review on these topics covering a time frame between 2008 and 2018, and used predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria for the literature to be selected. Key papers beyond this time period could be included as per panel consensus. A strength rating for each recommendation was added based on a review of the available literature and after panel discussion.

Management of male urethral strictures has extensively been described in literature. GRL0617 Nevertheless, few well-designed studies providing high level of evidence are available. In well-resourced countries, iatrogenic injury to the urethra is one of the most common causes of strictures. Asymptomatic strictures do not always need active treatment. Kidney transplantation (KT) is the best renal replacement treatment. The rewarming time is associated with ischemia/reperfusion damage. In both the open (open KT [OKT]) and the robotic (robotic-assisted KT [RAKT]) approaches, ice slush is used to maintain graft temperature (T°) below 20 °C. This may result in nonhomogeneous graft T° maintenance and, particularly during RAKT where the graft is completely inside the abdominal cavity, rises concerns regarding systemic hypothermia.

To design a cold ischemia device (CID) to maintain a constant and homogeneous low graft T° during surgery.

In IDEAL phase 0, a CID was developed and tested to determine its cooling effect on the kidney inside a closed system at 37.5 °C, by comparing it with kidney alone versus a gauze-jacket filled with ice slush. The CID was evaluated in pigs undergoing OKT and RAKT, assessing feasibility and adverse reactions. In IDEAL phase 1, the CID was tested in human OKT and RAKT.

Pemphigus foliaceus is exceedingly rare around the world, except within the few regions where it occurs as an endemic variant. Various factors can trigger immune mechanisms that induce pemphigus foliaceus or worsen its course.

To determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients with pemphigus foliaceus in a large series from a non-endemic country, investigate the triggering factors, and seasonal patterns.

The data of the patients diagnosed with pemphigus foliaceus in the study's center between 1989-2018 were retrospectively analyzed.

Sixty-eight patients (mean age, 45.7±14.5 years) were included in the study. The number of onsets reached its peak in spring-summer (p=0.008). A total of 117 relapses occurred in 42 patients and were most common in spring-summer (not significant). Specific trigger factors were detected in 45 relapses. In the other 72 relapses, the peak was observed in spring-summer (p=0.005). There were no significant differences in the demographic and clinical variaradiation should be considered a trigger factor for the peaks in spring-summer, particularly in Turkey.

Data were collected from the Humana insurance database using PearlDiver patient records from 2015 to 2017. Subjects were identified using Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases procedure codes related to carpal tunnel diagnosis and release. Codes were used to identify patients who underwent carpal tunnel release (CTR) and had revision CTR within a 1-year follow-up period. Patient demographic characteristics, including age, sex, medical comorbidities, and smoking status, were collected. In addition, multivariable analysis of the risk of a revision procedure within 1 postoperative year was performed to determine independent risk factors, including the surgical approach, associated with revision CTR.
