How to Repair a Bifold Door Top Pivot
The top pivot of the bifold closet door could be loosened and scrape the floor. It is possible to fix this by loosening the set screw of the top bracket a bit.
The pivot pin on the top is a screw made of metal that is inserted into a plastic cap with a lipped end that stays in the track just above the door. You'll also require a screwdriver, and possibly an assortment of pliers.
Remove the bottom pin
Bifold doors are great for saving space in closets, but they can start to slide or scratch against the floor or fall out of their brackets. There are solutions to most issues with a few basic adjustments.
The most frequent issue is the bottom pin being loose or bracket. You can adjust this by pressing the spring-loaded wheel located at the top of the door and then swivelling the door in a position to align it with the bottom track. After the gap has been equalized, tighten the bolt that holds the top pivot bracket in order to keep the door in position.
Another issue that is common is when the door's bottom hits the carpet and scrapes along it. This could be due to installing new carpet or changing the flooring material, and it can also be a result of an unbalanced gap between the door and hinge-side jamb. It is possible to fix this by loosening the top guide, sliding it sideways or removing the top pivot point.
The most frequent issue is when the upper track is misaligned. This can be fixed by loosening and moving the screw on top of the set screw in or out as required. After you've adjusted the bolts and nuts that hold the track in place you can slide it back into the bracket and secure it using the screw.
To take off the pin at the bottom, grasp both panels together at the sides and lift them off of the lower track and off of their brackets. Release the locking levers on the lower bracket to let the pin go. If the pin does not have a mounting bracket you can use a flat-head screwscrew between the bottom of the pivot flange and the door to pull the pin out of the door. Once you have a good grip on the pin and can remove it, turn it from left to right. If you're not able to remove the pin, you might need to remove the entire panel from the track system. If this is the case, place it on a set of saw horses to make it easier to handle.
Take off the pin that is on top.
They are fantastic at conserving space, but they can be a hassle if they start to sag or scrape the floor or even veer off the track. There are a few easy adjustments that can often bring them back to their the right track.
If the doors are not sliding in a consistent manner you can loosen the screw on the top pivot point bracket with the help of a screwdriver, and move it a bit. Close the door to check whether it is in alignment with the frame. If it does, tighten the screw.
Another common issue with internal bifold doors is that the bottoms of the doors scrape against the carpet. If this is the problem, you can raise the bottom of the doors using the bottom pin adjustement. If the door is too wide, you will have to take it off and cut it using the help of a saw.
The wood around the pivot pins and anchors can get damaged over time. It is possible to use epoxy to fix the crack and stop it from becoming worse. Apply a small amount of epoxy to the crack, and let it dry before opening the door.
It could be that your bifold doors are too far apart. It can be fixed by moving the top of the door upwards or downwards on the track.
It can be difficult to do this project on your own and you'll require an assistant. Take the interior and exterior panels of the door on the sides. Then lift them. They can be stacked to make it easier to handle.
If there are locking levers on the pivot bracket, remove the levers. Take the pin's top with pliers and turn it from left to right while pulling it out. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the door. Once both pins have been removed the door will then open and align with the track. If it doesn't work it's possible to try again. You can use a drilling tool to straighten the track if it's bent.
Reinstall the pin at the bottom.
If the bottom pin isn't working properly, the door may bind, preventing it from opening and closing smoothly. Fortunately, the problem is often easy to repair. A damaged or loose bolt for mounting is often the reason. If this is the case the best solution is to replace the screw with a new one that's the same size as the previous one. Screw it into the correct position and tighten it.
If you're looking to get more serious about your bifold door repair then you can use a device like an air pressure gauge to test for proper compression of the top pin that is spring-loaded. The gauge can also be used to determine if the pin is broken or cracked. This is important information to know if you are planning on replacing it.
A good way to determine if the current pivot pin is damaged or worn out is by measuring its diameter as well as the diameter of the cap on its pin. Then, compare the measurements to the available replacement parts. This will allow you to find the right part for your door.
Open the doors and lean the doors against each other prior to installing the new pivot pin. If you're using set of closet door knobs that you want to install the pivot pin make sure you mark a line of level down the center of the leading edge of each door. Make use of a long level to mark this line so that you can ensure that the top bifold track is level and in good alignment with the jambs.
Once the doors are set, insert the top pin into the pivot guide within the track and swing the bottom of the door into position so that the pin's bottom rests in the bracket that is shaped like an L. If the door doesn't fit between the top bracket and the bottom guide it is possible to raise or lower it by uncrewing the adjustable pivot at the bottom of the door. Use a long-handled level to mark a plumb-line across the middle of the door frame. If the gap between the side jamb of the hinge and the door isn't even adjustable, adjust the pivot at the bottom.
Reinstall the Top Pin
A bifold door is a set of hinged panels that fold back on tracks to the opposite side of the door opening. They are available in various styles, including louvered, paneled or solid. They are ideal for closets, hallways, bedrooms, or laundry rooms. If you have an existing pair of bifold doors which scrape the floor or aren't functioning properly, it's possible to adjust them by adjusting the top and bottom pivots.
Start by removing the top pin from the upper track and pivot guide. Then, slide the bottom pin into its bracket, and check to make sure that the gap between the door and jamb-side of the frame is even and in the correct position.
If the gap is too wide it is possible to raise the bottom of the door by loosening and fixing the pivot adjustable at the bottom of the door. This will pull the bottom of the doors towards the frame, decreasing the gap. You can adjust the track hanger's height by loosening the screw at the bottom of the track and adjusting the angle using an adjustable wrench.
Once you've got the track hanger and bottom pin installed, it's time to install the top track bracket on the hinge side of the door frame. For precise positioning, follow the directions and diagrams that come in your kit. Make sure that the track is aligned and flush with the floor prior to fixing it to the floor.
When installing a track, measure the width and height of the door opening to make sure you have the proper dimension of track and the appropriate hardware kit. Consult a professional installer for guidance if you're not sure about how to install bifold doors. They can tell you whether the bifold doors that you've got are the proper size for your opening and help you select the best design of door that will fit your home. They can also trim the doors to fit, if needed. bi fold door repairs could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
