The aim of the present study was to evaluate the circulating T regulatory cells (Tregs) in patients undergoing extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) for the prevention of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and to search for any correlation between Tregs counts and chronic GvHD occurrence. Among n = 12 patients with complete longitudinal data, the median cumulative values of absolute peripheral Tregs counts were 21.64 and 63.49 cells/µL for patients who developed chronic GvHD and those who did not develop it, respectively (p = 0.05). The analysis of the median absolute counts of peripheral HLA-DR + Tregs provided similar results, showing that 20% (1 out of 5) and 100% (7 out of 7) of patients with HLA-DR + Tregs values of > 5 cells/µL were in the GvHD and non-GvHD groups, respectively (p = 0.01). In conclusion, the present results support the involvement of Tregs in the prevention of chronic GvHD in patients receiving ECP and suggest Tregs count as a potential biomarker of ECP effectiveness. Future strategies are needed to enhance Tregs expansion and/or activity in conjunction with ECP for an effective chronic GvHD prevention. The potential association between medical resources and the proportion of oldest-old (90 years of age and above) in the Chinese population was examined, and we found that the higher proportion of oldest-old was associated with the higher number of beds in hospitals and health centers.Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common histological subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL). DLBCL is an aggressive malignancy that displays a great heterogeneity in terms of morphology, genetics and biological behavior. While a sustained complete remission is obtained in the majority of patients with standard immunochemotherapy, patients with refractory of relapsed disease after first-line treatment have a poor prognosis. This patient group represents an important unmet need in lymphoma treatment. In recent years, improved understanding of the underlying molecular pathogenesis had led to new classification and prognostication tools, including the development of cell-free biomarkers in liquid biopsies. Although the majority of studies have focused on the use of cell-free fragments of DNA (cfDNA), there has been an increased interest in circulating-free coding and non-coding RNA, including messenger RNA (mRNA), microRNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) and circular RNA (circRNA), as well as RNA encapsulated in extracellular vesicles or tumor-educated platelets (TEPs). We performed a systematic search in PubMed to identify articles that evaluated circulating RNA as diagnostic, subtype, treatment response or prognostic biomarkers in a human DLBCL population. A total of 35 articles met the inclusion criteria. The aim of this systematic review is to present the current understanding of circulating RNA molecules as biomarker in DLBCL and to discuss their future potential.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disease affecting women of reproductive age and associated with reproductive and metabolic dysfunction. Few studies are available regarding metabolic traits in Brazilian women with PCOS. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the available evidence regarding metabolic traits and comorbidities in Brazilian women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase for cross-sectional, case-control, or cohort studies focusing on populations of different regions from Brazil, published until July 31, 2019. Studies were selected if they reported PCOS diagnostic criteria. Studies without a control group were included if they presented relevant metabolic data.
Of 4856 studies initially identified, 27 were included in the systematic review and 12 were included in the meta-analysis, for a total of 995 women with PCOS defined by Rotterdam criteria and metabolic profile than women without PCOS with no important regional differences. The prevalence of metabolic changes is intermediate in Brazil vs. other countries.
The sulfur cycle encompasses a series of complex aerobic and anaerobic transformations of S-containing molecules and plays a fundamental role in cellular and ecosystem-level processes, influencing biological carbon transfers and other biogeochemical cycles. Despite their importance, the microbial communities and metabolic pathways involved in these transformations remain poorly understood, especially for inorganic sulfur compounds of intermediate oxidation states (thiosulfate, tetrathionate, sulfite, polysulfides). Isolated and highly stratified, the extreme geochemical and environmental features of meromictic ice-capped Lake A, in the Canadian High Arctic, provided an ideal model ecosystem to resolve the distribution and metabolism of aquatic sulfur cycling microorganisms along redox and salinity gradients.
Applying complementary molecular approaches, we identified sharply contrasting microbial communities and metabolic potentials among the markedly distinct water layers of Lake A, with similarities to dules are major sources of electron donors and acceptors for aquatic and sedimentary microbial communities in association with the classical sulfur cycle. selleck chemicals Video abstract.
Despite improvements in perioperative care, major abdominal surgery continues to be associated with significant perioperative morbidity. Accurate preoperative risk stratification and optimisation (prehabilitation) are necessary to reduce perioperative morbidity. This study evaluated the screening and assessment of modifiable risk factors amendable for prehabilitation interventions and measured the patient compliance rate with recommended interventions.
Between May 2019 and January 2020, patients referred to our hospital for HPB surgery were screened and assessed on six modifiable preoperative risk factors. The risk factors and screening tools used, with cutoff values, included (i) low physical fitness (a 6-min walk test < 82% of patient's calculated norm and/or patient's activity level not meeting the global recommendations on physical activity for health). Patients who were unfit based on the screening were assessed with a cardiopulmonary exercise test (anaerobic threshold ≤ 11 mL/kg/min); (ii) malnutrition (patient-generated subjective global assessment ≥ 4); (iii) iron-deficiency anaemia (haemoglobin < 12 g/dL for women, < 13 g/dL for men and transferrin saturation ≤ 20%); (iv) frailty (Groningen frailty indicator/Robinson frailty score ≥ 4); (v) substance use (smoking and alcohol use of > 5 units per week) and (vi) low psychological resilience (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale ≥ 8).
