Importantly, paranormal explanations were more likely when participants reported their feelings than when not reported. Beyond these results, we replicated that 1) higher pre-existing PBs were associated with more psychic explanations (confirmation bias), and 2) PBs and repetition avoidance did not change from before to after the performance. Yet, PBs reminiscent of the actual performance (spiritualism) increased. Results showed that young adults easily endorse PBs and paranormal explanations for events, and that their affective reactions matter. Future studies should use participants' subjective experiences to target PBs in causal designs (e.g., adding control conditions).
To report brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography findings in pediatric patients with congenital idiopathic bilateral vocal fold dysfunction and analyze factors associated with its etiology and resolution.
Case series with retrospective review.
Tertiary care multi-institutional setting Nationwide Children's Hospital, Indiana University, University of North Carolina, and Cleveland Clinic.
Pediatric patients with congenital idiopathic bilateral vocal fold dysfunction were included in this review.
Congenital idiopathic bilateral vocal fold dysfunction was identified in 74 patients from 2000 to 2018. Brain MRI scans were performed in all patients and ultrasonography in 30 (40.5%). Normal imaging results were most commonly found in patients born full-term (
< .0001) or via vaginal delivery (
< .01). Abnormal brain MRI and ultrasound results were found in 38 of 74 (51.3%) and 16 of 30 (53.3%), respectively. Type I Chiari malformation was not identified in any patient. No specin or subsequent resolution rates. While imaging is often performed to detect and treat any reversible causes of bilateral vocal fold dysfunction, in this series, imaging findings were heterogeneous and did not identify any treatable causes, such as type I Chiari malformation.
Aim of this study was to analyze the overall complication and failure rates of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs), in a 1-year consecutive unselected cohort of 482 adult patients, affected by non-hematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy.
Adult outpatients (aged 18-75 years), with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 0-2, bearing solid tumors and candidates for intravenous chemotherapy were eligible for the study. Exclusion criteria were active infections, coagulopathy (defined as platelet count <50,000/μL and/or prothrombin time more than 18 s), life expectancy <6 months, or inability to give written informed consent. Devices were all implanted in an outpatients' hospital facility, following predefined evidence-based institutional guidelines and protocols by a PICC-dedicated team at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy, during the 12-month period from January 1 to December 31, 2019.
Five-hundred PICCs were implanted in a cohort of prospective study supports the increasing use of PICCs in adult oncology outpatients treated in specialized centers with chemotherapy for non-hematological malignancies. In this clinical setting, PICC failure occurred in 6% only of the inserted devices.Main subtypes of cutaneous lupus erythematosus are represented by acute, subacute cutaneous, intermittent and chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Discoid lupus erythematosus represents the most common phenotype of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The spectrum of clinical manifestations mirrors that of several and distinct histopathological features. Such variability among different CLE subtypes is also observed at dermoscopy. Dermoscopy is nowadays considered an additional valuable method for skin lesions assessment in general dermatology, following and completing the well-known clinical diagnostic steps, such as medical history and clinical examination. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive imaging tool able to assess the epidermis and upper dermis producing high resolution (horizontal ∼1.25 μm, vertical ∼5 μm), en face tissue sections used for melanocytic and inflammatory evaluation. 10-Deacetylbaccatin-III In this study, we reported dermoscopic and RCM features about 9 patients affected by subacute and chronic lupus erythematosus retrospectively analyzed.
Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (
H-MRS) has been shown to be an important non-invasive tool to quantify neuronal loss or damage in the investigation of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. The purpose of this article is to discuss the clinical utility of
H-MRS in determining CNS involvement in individuals with rheumatic autoimmune diseases.
This study is a systematic review of the literature, conducted during the month of November and December of 2019 of articles published in the last 16 years (2003-2019). The search for relevant references was done through the exploration of electronic databases (PubMed/Medline and Embase). We searched for studied including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), juvenile idiopathic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis, Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), vasculitis and Behçet. Only studies published after 2003 and with more than 20 patients were included.
We included 26 articles. NAA/Cr ratios were significant lower and Cho/Cr ratios increased in several brain regions in SLE, SS, RA, SSc. Associations with disease activity, inflammatory markers, CNS manifestations and comorbidities was variable across studies and diseases.
The presence of neurometabolite abnormalities in patients without ouvert CNS manifestations, suggests that systemic inflammation, atherosclerosis or abnormal vascular reactivity may be associated with subclinical CNS manifestations. MRS may be a usefull non-invasive method for screening patients with risk for CNS manifestations.
