Zengin ve stratejik topraklarını korumak için İngiliz kralı, Seine boyunca rotayı yasaklamak için emprenye edilemez bir kale inşa etmeye karar verdi ve böylece Normandiya'daki üstünlüğünü iddia etti.
Krallığın her ne pahasına olursa olsun korunması gerekiyordu ve kaybedecek zaman yoktu. İnşaat Ekim 1197'de başladı ve iki yıldan az bir sürede adamları, yenilikçi mimari kullanarak Seine kıyısında büyük bir kale tamamlamıştı. Bu muazzam proje, İngiliz tacının yıllık bütçesinin dörtte birini aldı. Bitmiş yapıya bakıldığında, Kral Richard kalenin gücünü tanımlamak için Fransızca “Gaillard ” kelimesini kullandı. Anıtsal boyutları ile bina, birden fazla düşmanın omurgasına bir titreme gönderecek olan adı aldı.
Ancak sadece dört yıl sonra, Fransa Kralı Philip, inanılmaz savunmasına rağmen, bu taş monolitinin kontrolünü ele geçirmeye kararlı 6.000 kişilik bir ordunun başında bölgeyi kuşattı. Fakat emprenye edilemeyen kaleyi devirmeyi nasıl başardılar?
