Facing the biofilm issue existing on the surface of container, boundary conditions were exported and thereby pointing out potential "dead ends" where the ultrasound may not be effectively transduced. Both in vitro and in silico results may inspire the food industry to adopt US-TM treatment to achieve biofilm control.CO2-expanded organic solvent is a kind of important fluid medium and has broad applications in chemical industry, environmental protection and other fields. Ultrasonic cavitation in gas expanded liquids (GXLs) is conducive to enhancing mass transfer and producing many exciting phenomena. In this paper, the ultrasonic cavitations and streaming in the saturated CO2-expanded liquid N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 4.2 MPa and 5.2 MPa are observed by a high-speed camera. The cavitation intensity and time trace of pressure pulses are recorded using a PZT hydrophone. The influences of gas-liquid equilibrium pressure and ultrasonic power on the cluster dynamics of transient and stable cavitation are examined. The excess molar enthalpies required for CO2 dissociation from DMF are calculated by Peng-Robinson equations of state and the change of surface free energy of CO2-expanded DMF is predicted. check details The results show that the excess enthalpy of the mixture is one of the key factors to control ultrasonic cavitation at high pressurized conditions, while the surface tension is the key factor for low pressure. As the increase of applied ultrasonic power, the formation and collapsing frequency of bubble clusters increases, and the amplitude and cyclic frequency of pressure pulse are enhanced. The transient cavitation intensity increases as it reaches a maximum value at a certain ultrasonic power and then decreases. The change trends of stable cavitation intensity under different pressures are basically same. It can be concluded from the evidence that ultrasonic cavitation in CO2-expanded DMF is affected by the combined effect of compression and substitution compression depresses the nucleation and growth of bubbles, while the high solubility of CO2 in DMF is conducive to the generation of bubbles in cavitation.Propelled by enormous increase in demand for fuel sources, Canadian oil sands are becoming increasingly important as a fuel source due to their abundance and upgrading capability. However, extraction of bitumen, a high acid crude (HAC) oil, requires 2-3 units of water per unit of oil resulting in naphthenic acid (NA)-rich oil sands process affected water (OSPW) collected in effluent ponds. This study illustrates the role of sonochemistry in the accelerated degradation through H-abstraction and subsequent decarboxylation of aromatic and alicyclic naphthenic acid model compounds. Benzoic acid and 3-methylcyclohexane carboxylic acid were selected as model NA compounds to investigate the mechanism of hydroxyl radical (OH•) initiated carboxylic acid degradation in 378 KHz sonochemical reactor. Established FTIR methods with low resolution LCMS spectroscopy confirmation were applied to determine the extent of carboxylic acid degradation and identify the formation of products. FTIR monitoring showed a non-linear degrinable degradation method for mitigating NAs in OSPW, but sonication periods need to be considered carefully to ensure adequate mineralization of their constituents and combinatorial methods with other advanced oxidation methods may be needed to enhance industrial application. In Part II, an in silico screening approach using first principles is reported to identify the breakdown of the organic compounds and determine molecular rates of reaction to confirm the mechanistic origins of the compounds formed. In this study, the impacts of different ultrasonic treatments on TiO2 particles were determined and they were used to manufacture the photoelectrodes of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Two methods were used to prepare TiO2 particles directly sonicated by an ultrasonic horn, and TiO2 treated indirectly by an ultrasonic cleaner. TEM, XPS analysis was confirmed that cavitation bubbles generated during ultrasonication resulted in defects on the surface of TiO2 particles, and the defect induced surface activation. To understand the effect of TiO2 surface activation on energy conversion efficiency of DSSC, ultrasonic horn DSSC and ultrasonic cleaner DSSC were prepared. The UV-vis analysis exhibited that the ultrasonic horn DSSC possessed higher dye adsorption when compared to the ultrasonic cleaner DSSC, and the EIS analysis confirmed that the electron mobility was greatly increased in the ultrasonic horn DSSC. The energy conversion efficiency of the ultrasonic horn DSSC was measured to be 3.35%, which is about 45% increase in comparison to that of the non-ultrasonic treated DSSC (2.35%). In addition to this regard, recombination resistance of ultrasonic horn DSSC was calculated to be 450 Ω·cm2, increasing more than two times compared to the non-ultrasonic treated DSSC (200 Ω·cm2). Taken together, these ultrasonic treatments significantly improved the energy conversion efficiency of DSSC, which was not tried in DSSC-related research, and might lead us to develop more efficient practical route in the manufacturing of DSSC.The advent of Multicollector ICP-MS inaugurated the analysis of new metal isotope systems, the so-called "non-traditional" isotopes. They are now available tools to study geochemical and ecotoxicological aspects of marine metal contamination and hence, to push the frontiers of our knowledge. However, such applications are still in their infancy, and an accessible state-of-the-art describing main applications, obstacles, gaps, and directions for further development was missing from the literature. This paper fills this gap and aims to encourage the marine scientific community to explore the contributions of this newly available information for the fields of chemical risk assessment, biomonitoring, and trophic transfer of metal contaminants. In the current "Anthropocene" epoch, metal contamination will continue to threaten marine aquatic ecosystems, and "non-traditional" isotopes can be a valuable tool to detect human-induced changes across time-space involving metal contaminants, and their interaction with marine biota.Baseline polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediments were measured in Gorgan Bay, Iran. Total PAHs, TPH, and OCPs concentrations ranged between 13.70 and 23.68 ng g-1, 2.97 to 11.51 μg g-1 dry weight, and below detection to 1.41 ng g-1, respectively. Benzo [k] fluoranthene and anthracene had the highest (BkF; 19.77 ± 0.08 ng g-1), and lowest (Ant; 4.38 ± 1.72 ng g-1) individual PAH concentrations, respectively. The most abundant OCPs were β-Endosulfan, followed by methoxychlor and endrin. PAH isomeric ratios in sediments revealed that contamination originated from mixed sources, with a strong indication of pyrogenic sources. Ecological risk assessments based on sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) suggested that individual PAHs and OCPs posed low ecological risks in Gorgan Bay.Northern Dvina River is one of the largest rivers in the European Arctic flowing into the White Sea through the populated regions with developed industry. Floating plastics include microplastics (0.5-5 mm) and mesoplastics (5-25 mm) were observed on seasonal variations in the Northern Dvina River mouth. The samples were collected every month from September to November 2019 and from May to October 2020 with a Neuston net that was togged 3 nautical miles in the Korbel'nyy Branch of the River delta. Chemical composition of the plastic particles was determined using a Fourier transmission infrared spectrometer. The majority of the microplastics were identified as polyethylene 52.6%, followed by polypropylene 36.8%. After estimating the export fluxes of microplastics from the Northern Dvina River to the Arctic, there is no significant seasonal variation of the river export of microplastics. The microplastics export rate during the spring flood period in May turned out to be maximum, 58 items/s, while the minimum discharge was in September with a value of 9 items/s. The average weight concentration of microplastics was 18.5 μg/m3, which is higher than it was found in the Barents Sea - 12.5 μg/m3 and several times higher than in the Eurasian Arctic on average - 3.7 μg/m3. These results indicate that the Northern Dvina River is being one of the main sources of microplastic pollution of the White and the Barents Seas. The dynamics of contaminants, such as mercury (Hg), in marine trophic webs is a critical topic in the scientific community due to the high concentrations encountered in organisms. In this study we attempted to provide information on total Hg accumulation patterns and possible pathways of trophic transfers assessed in combination with δ13C and δ15N to understand how this contaminant permeates three sub-Antarctic food webs the Beagle Channel (BC), the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego (AC-TDF) and Burdwood Bank (BB). We found a site-specific pattern of Hg transfer and biomagnification processes, while the oceanic BB showed major Hg transfer through the pelagic domain, coastal sectors (BC and AC-TDF) indicate a general biodilution process but with Hg concentrations incrementing with the benthivory grade. This represents a dissimilar Hg bioavailability for marine consumers that rely on different diet and forage in different habitats, and may become an issue of important conservation concern for these southern areas. To help better assist the management of Diluted bitumen (DilBit) spills in marine environment, a model named as DilBit Weathering Model (DBWM) was developed in this study to simulate DilBits weathering in marine environment. The DBWM was developed based on specific algorithms for evaporation, dispersion, biodegradation, as well as density and viscosity changes for DilBit weathering and other widely used algorithms for conventional oil weathering in marine environment. To validate the model, a series of DilBit weathering simulation were conducted and compared with the experimental data. Furthermore, the performance of DBWM was compared with a widely used oil weathering model (Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills, ADIOS2). The results demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of the developed DBWM in simulating the weathering of marine DilBit spills. Thus, the proposed DBWM can provide effective decision support to marine DilBit spill management.Outlet infrastructure and hypersaline discharge from large-scale desalination operations have the potential to impact marine environments. Here, we present the results of a six-year M-BACI assessment of the impacts of desalination discharge outlet construction and hypersaline effluent on the cover of habitat-forming species on temperate reefs. The construction of the desalination outlet caused a decrease in the cover of Ecklonia radiata (kelp) and an increase in the cover of algal turfs up to 55 m from the outlet. Following the commencement of discharging of hypersaline brine, the impact to E. radiata and algal turfs persisted, but decreased in spatial extent to be less than 25 m from the outlet. Hypersaline discharge was also associated with a significant decline in the cover of sponges in outlet compared to reference sites. Overall, our results demonstrate that the water security benefits from large-scale desalination may sometimes be appropriately balanced against the associated ecological consequences.
