How to Repair a Bifold Door Top Pivot
The top pivot of the bifold closet door could become loose and scratch the floor. This can be fixed by loosening the set screw on the top bracket a bit.
The pivot pin on the top is a screw made from metal that is inserted into a cap made of plastic with a lipped end that stays in the track just above the door. You'll need a screwdriver and possibly pliers.
Take off the Bottom Pin
The bifold doors can be a great option to make space in your closet, however over time they may start to slide against the floor, or even pop out of brackets. There are solutions to most issues with a few basic adjustments.
The most frequent issue is the bottom pin being loose or bracket. You can adjust the track by pressing the spring-loaded wheel to the top of the door and then moving it to the right the proper position. Once the gap has been adjusted, tighten the screw holding the top pivot bracket in order to keep the door in place.
Another common issue is when the door's bottom hits the carpet and scrapes across it. This could be due to installing new carpet or changing the flooring material, and it could also be the result of an uneven gap between the hinge and the door jamb. You can solve this by loosening the top guide and sliding it sideways, or you can unscrew the pivot point on top and then move it in or out.
The last issue that is common is when the upper track becomes misaligned with the door frame, and this issue can be resolved by loosening the screw on the top of the set and adjusting it in or out as necessary. After you've adjusted the nuts and bolts that hold the track in place you can slide it back into the bracket and secure it with the screw.
To take off replace bifold doors at the bottom to remove the bottom pin, hold both panels at the sides and lift them off the track below and off of their brackets. Release the locking levers on the lower bracket to release the pin. If the pin does not have a bracket for mounting, place a flat-head screwdriver in between the bottom of the pivot flange and the door to pull it off of the door. Once you've gotten a firm grip on the pin and you are able to pull it out and turn it left to right. If you're unable to remove the pin you may have to remove the track from the panel. If this is the case, then put it on a set of saw horses to make it easier to move.
Remove the pin with the highest point.
Bifold doors are excellent for saving space, but they can be troublesome when they begin to slide and scrape against the floor or slam off their track. There are a few basic adjustments that can help bring them back to their track.
If the doors slide in a different way, loosen with a screwdriver the screw at the top bracket pivot point and move it slightly. Close the door to determine whether it is aligned with the frame. If it does, tighten up the screw.
Another issue that is common to internal bifold doors is that the bottoms of the doors scrape against the carpet. If this is the problem, you can raise the bottom of the doors using the bottom pin adjustement. If the door is too high, you'll need remove the doors and cut them down with the aid of a saw.
The wood around the pivot pins and anchors could get damaged over time. It is possible to use epoxy to fix the crack and prevent it from becoming worse. Apply a small amount of the epoxy to the crack, and let it dry before using the door.
If your bifold doors aren't closing or aligning well with the frame it could be due to the fact that they're too far apart. It can be fixed by moving the door's top either up or down the track.
Attempting to do this by hand can be a challenge and it's advisable to get help when working on this project. Pick up the exterior and interior panels of the door along the sides. Then, lift them up. Stack them together for less difficult handling.
If there are locking levers on the pivot bracket, release them. If not take the pin's top with a pair of vise grips and turn it left to right while pulling it out. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the door. Once both pins have been removed, the door will open and align smoothly with the track. If this doesn't work, you can always try again. You can use a drilling device to straighten the track if it's bent.
Reinstall the Bottom Pin
If the bottom pin isn't working properly, the door might become stuck, hindering it from closing and opening easily. Fortunately, the issue is usually simple to fix. Often it's a loose or missing mounting screw is the culprit. If this is the situation, you should replace the screw by a new one of the same length. Then, screw it in place and tighten it.
If you're looking to become more serious about your bifold door repair then you can use a tool such as an air pressure gauge to check for proper compression of the spring-loaded top pin. The gauge can also be used to determine if the pin is damaged or cracked. This is a crucial information to consider when replacing it.
A good way to determine if the current pivot pin is damaged or worn out is by measuring its diameter as well as the diameter of the cap on its pin. Then take a look at the measurements and compare them to the available replacement parts. This will allow you to find the right parts for your door.
Lean the doors open and open the doors against each other prior to installing the new pivot pin. If you're using a set of closet door knobs, carefully draw a line of a level along the edge of the leading edge of each door. Use a long level to do this so you're sure that the top bifold track is level and in good alignment with the jambs.
After the doors are installed, insert the top pin of the pivot guide of the track. Then, you can swivel the bottom of the door until the pin is seated on the L-shaped bracket. If the door doesn't fit correctly between the top guide and the bottom bracket, raise or lower the door as needed by unscrewing or screwing the pivot that is adjustable on the bottom of the door. Make sure that the gap between the door and the hinge side jamb is equal by using a long-length level and drawing a plumb line down the middle of the door frame.
Reinstall the pin with the top
Bifolds are hinged panels that are folded back on tracks and placed on either side of the door opening. They are available in a range of styles, such as solid or paneled doors and louvered doors. They are ideal for closets, hallways, bedrooms or laundry rooms. If you have an existing pair of bifold doors that scratch the floor or don't function properly, it's possible to adjust them by changing the pivots on the top and bottom.
Remove the top pin first from the upper track. Then slide the bottom pin into its bracket, and check to see if the gap between the door and jamb-side of the frame is even and in the correct position.
If the gap is too large, you can raise the bottom of the door by loosening and screwing in the adjustable pivot at the bottom of the door. This will move the door's bottom towards the frame, and reduce the gap. You can adjust the track hanger's height by loosening the screw on the bottom of the track, and then adjusting the position with the help of a wrench.
Install the top track bracket at the hinge side of the door frame once you have put back the track hanger. Use the instructions and diagrams included in the kit to ensure that it is placed precisely. Be sure that the track is flush and level with the floor prior to fastening it.
When installing a track, take measurements of the length and width of the door opening to be certain that you have the proper dimension of track and the appropriate hardware kit. Get a professional to install the door for guidance if you're not sure about how to install bifold doors. They will be able to inform you if your bifold doors are the right size for the opening and help you select the best design for your home. They can also trim the doors to fit if necessary. This will save you time and money.
