How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor


The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially in the case of an Bosch unit which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission in your Audi because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine is turning. When this sensor fails, it will disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12.
