Commonly used outcome measures in clinical trials in stroke rehabilitation include the modified Rankin Score (mRS), Functional Impairment Measures (FIM), Barthel Index and quality of life (QoL). Despite being a part of QoL, happiness is arguably a significant construct on its own. While QoL assesses perceptions of various extrinsic aspects of life, happiness may be used as a measure of subjective enjoyment of life after an illness. We review the literature discussing the use of happiness as a formal outcome measure in stroke care and subacute and long-term stroke rehabilitation. Ultimately we recommend the wider use of happiness as an outcome measure where appropriate in these settings.
Post-stroke depression (PSD) is one of the emotional disorders after the onset of stroke. Many studies have indicated that inflammatory processes can promote the occurrence and development of PSD. The purpose of our study was to explore the potential relationship between PSD and two inflammatory biomarkers inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and macrophage inflammatory protein 1α (MIP-1α).

In total, 80 patients diagnosed with depression after the first-ever acute ischemic stroke were enrolled in PSD group consecutively. During the same period, 40 non-depressed patients following the first-ever acute ischemic stroke and 40 healthy control subjects were recruited as non-PSD group and normal group, respectively. All participants have performed serum iNOS and MIP-1α level examination with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The severity of depressive symptoms was evaluated by the 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-24).

Serum iNOS and MIP-1α levels were significantly higher in PSD group than those in non-PSD and normal groups (
< 0.001). Serum iNOS and MIP-1α levels of PSD patients with varying degrees of depression were significantly different, serum iNOS and MIP-1α levels became higher as the depressive symptoms became more severe (
< 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the elevated levels of iNOS, MIP-1α and HAMD scores (
= 0.262, 0.209,
< 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that both serum iNOS and MIP-1α levels were independently associated with PSD (OR = 2.790, 95% CI 0.712-10.933,
< 0.05 and OR = 1.922, 95% CI 0.648-9.815,
< 0.05, respectively) after adjustment for possible relevant confounders.

High serum levels of iNOS and MIP-1α were found to be associated with the development of PSD and closely related to its severity.

The burden of Alzheimer's dementia greatly impacts patients and their immediate families. Studies on the perspective of caretakers regarding nutrition in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia are lacking. Yet this information is needed to guide clinical care for patients with dementia. The study explored caretakers' perspective on nutritional challenges faced by patients with Alzheimer's disease and related Dementias at Butabika National Referral Hospital.

We conducted 20 in-depth interviews and 2 focus group discussions with 20 health workers and 16 caregivers, respectively. The focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Analysis was conducted using a thematic, constant comparative approach with an emphasis on dominant themes.

Participants had a mean age of 37 in the range (27-44) years. Seventeen (47%) of them were males. Their duration of Care for Dementia to patients was in the range (2-7) years. The highest level of education was a bachelor's degrs with Alzheimer's dementia.
Caretakers experience challenges ranging from psychotic manifestations of a patient to hindrances in the provision of nutritional care. A better understanding of their experience is essential for the development of interventions to help the family members, health workers and other care takers promote good nutrition in patients with Alzheimer's dementia. A clear referral system should be established to prevent overcrowding of patients at a mental national referral hospital to ensure adequate timely nutritional support to those admitted. Capacity building programs should continue to address the knowledge gap in nutritional requirements of patients with Alzheimer's dementia.
To establish a new prognostic tool for the prediction of post-stroke epilepsy (PSE) through combining the SeLECT score with IL-1β.

This prospective observational study included 915 patients with acute ischemic stroke. The SeLECT score was calculated, and serum IL-1β levels were measured within 24 h of their admission. One unprovoked late seizure following the acute phase of stroke was diagnosed as PSE. All patients were divided into PSE group and non-PSE group according to the occurrence of PSE. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the independent associations between the SeLECT score, IL-1β and PSE. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was employed to assess the predictive values of the SeLECT score, IL-1β and their combination for PSE.

Fifty-three patients occurred PSE within 1 year after stroke onset (5.8%). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the SeLECT score [odds ratio (OR) 1.416, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.191-1.863,
=0.013] and IL-1β (OR 1.457, 95% CI 1.215-1.894,
<0.001) were independent risk factors for PSE after adjusting for more than one comorbidity, stroke laterality, large-artery atherosclerosis, thrombolysis, age and use of statins. The AUC of the SeLECT score and IL-1β for predicting PSE was 0.756 (SE 0.033, 95% CI 0.692-0.819) and 0.811 (SE 0.032, 95% CI 0.748-0.875), respectively. The AUC of their combination was 0.933 (SE 0.027, 95% CI 0.880-0.985). Z test showed that the AUC of their combination was significantly higher than that of the SeLECT score or IL-1β alone (0.933 vs 0.756, Z=4.151,
<0.01; 0.933 vs 0.811, Z=2.914,
<0.01). Combination prediction of the SeLECT score and IL-1β for PSE had a high predictive value with a sensitivity of 88.06% and specificity of 82.37%.

The combination of the SeLECT score and IL-1β had a potential to act as a new prognostic tool for the prediction of PSE.

Nigella sativa, also known as black seed, has been widely used to treat various diseases and is one of the most extensively researched medicinal plants. Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main component of black seed volatile oil and has been proven to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic properties. The potential therapeutic properties of TQ against various pulmonary disorders have been studied in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Furthermore, the application of nanotechnology may increase drug solubility, cellular absorption, drug release (sustained or control), and drug delivery to lung tissue target sites. As a result, fabricating TQ as nanoparticles (NPs) is a potential therapeutic approach against a variety of lung diseases. In this current review, we summarize recent findings on the efficacy of TQ and its nanotypes in lung disorders caused by immunocompromised conditions such as cancer, diabetes, gastric ulcers, and other neurodegenerative diseases. It is concluded that TQ nanoparticles with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiasthma, and antitumor activity may be safely applied to treat lung disorders. However, more research is required before TQ nanoparticles can be used as pharmaceutical preparations in human studies.
Promotion odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) is essential for dentin regeneration. link2 Physical cellular microenvironment is of critical importance for stem cells differentiation and influences the function of other biological/chemical factors to differentiation.

Based on adjusting the mechanical/interfacial properties of hydrogels, multicellular spheroids (MCSs) of DPSCs generated through self-organization. link3 The spheroids were characterized by immunofluorescent staining and flow cytometry. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, ALP staining and Alizarin Red S staining were performed to evaluate the osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs with or without magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) induction.

MCSs of DPSCs exhibited a significant upregulation of E-cadherin and N-cadherin and enriched CD146 positive subpopulation, along with a stronger osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation ability. Moreover, DPSCs spheroids showed more substantial osteogenic differentiation tendency than the classical two-dimensional cultured DPSCs under the stimulation of magnetic IONPs.

Three-dimensional spheroids culture of DPSCs based on composite viscoelastic materials combined with mechanical/magnetic stimulation may provide a theoretical basis for the subsequent development of dentin or bone regeneration technology.

High levels of oxidants, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), are typical characteristics of an inflammatory microenvironment and are closely associated with a various inflammatory pathologies, eg, cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs by oxidation-responsive smart systems would be an efficient anti-inflammatory strategy that benefits from the selective drug release in an inflammatory site, a lower treatment dose, and minimizes side effects.

In this study, we present the feasibility of an oxidation-sensitive PEGylated alternating polyester, methoxyl poly(ethylene glycol)-
-poly(phthalic anhydride-
-glycidyl propargyl ether) (mPEG-
-P(PA-
-GPBAe)), as novel nanocarrier for curcumin (CUR), and explore the application in anti-inflammatory therapy.

The copolymers used were obtained by combining a click reaction and a ring-opening-polymerization method. CUR was loaded by self-assembly. The in vitro drug release, cytotoxicity toward RAW 264.
