The present study explored the auditory benefits of abacus-training using a battery of tests (auditory acuity, clarity, and cognition). The study also aimed to identify the relative contributions of auditory processing tests that are most sensitive to the effects of abacus-training.

The study was conducted on 60 children aged between 9 - 14 years. These participants were divided into two groups (abacus trained and untrained) of 30 each, who underwent a series of auditory functioning tests. Cabozantinib The battery of tests included auditory acuity (frequency, intensity, temporal, binaural and spatial resolution), auditory clarity (speech perception in noise), and auditory cognition (working digit and syllable memory).

Statistically (t-test and Mann Whitney U test), significant changes were observed in the spatial resolution, auditory clarity, and cognition tests, suggestive of positive outcomes of abacus training at the higher-order auditory processing. This finding was complemented by the discriminant function (DF) analyses, which showed that clarity and cognitive measures helped for effective group segregation (abacustrained and untrained). These measures had significantly higher contributions to the DF.

The findings of the study provide evidence of the multi-component benefits of abacus training in children and the transferability of learning effects to the auditory modality.

Several structures liable to compress the median nerve have been described around the elbow and proximal forearm. Signs of deficit justify surgical exploration and decompression by exoneurolysis. Better knowledge of the locations of these structures would ensure reliable and effective exploration.

The study hypothesis was that compressive structures show precise topography, with few variations in distance along the median nerve course.

The study was performed on 36 upper-limb cadaver specimens. The measurement reference level was the humeral bi-epicondylar line. Proximal-to-distal dissection located (1) Struthers' ligament, (2) the pronator teres bellies (PT) with their anatomic particularities of structure and insertion, (3) the lacertus fibrosus, (4) the fibrous arcade of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), (5) the accessory muscles, (6) the origin of the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN), (7) and the vascular arches.

Struthers' ligament was not located, but 1 case of medial bicipital fibrous arcade was found. The lacertus fibrosus crossed the median nerve at +1.5±0.6cm. PT insertion was high in 19 cases (53%). The humeral PT belly was thin in 21 cases (58%), crossing the median nerve more distally (+1.8±0.8cm) than the thicker muscles (+1±1.1cm) (p=0.016). The ulnar PT belly was fibrous in 14 cases (39%). A fibrous arcade was found between the 2 PT bellies in 23 cases (64%). The FDS arcade was located at 4.5-7cm from the bi-epicondylar line. An accessory flexor pollicis longus belly was found in 11% of cases. The AIN origin was at +4±1.6cm from the reference. A vascular pedicle crossed the median nerve in 3 cases.

The present study inventoried and mapped 6 potentially compressive structures neighboring or crossing the median nerve. Except for the FDS arcade, they showed very precise proximal-to-distal location, with variations of 0.5 to 1.5cm.

One of the treatment options for comminuted radial head fractures is radial head arthroplasty (RHA), especially when the elbow is also dislocated. While the clinical outcomes of RHA have been well documented, the incidence of post-traumatic osteoarthritis after RHA and its risk factors are not well known.

To determine the incidence of post-traumatic elbow osteoarthritis (humeroulnar and humeroradial joints) after RHA and identify its risk factors.

All patients who underwent RHA at our hospital between 2008 and 2016 were included retrospectively. The inclusion criteria were primary RHA, recent radial head fracture (isolated or associated with elbow dislocation), minimum 1 year of follow-up, clinical and radiographic examination at final assessment. The exclusion criteria were pre-existing elbow osteoarthritis, RHA revision, multiple fractures of the ipsilateral upper limb or polytrauma. The final assessment consisted of a clinical examination [joint range of motion (ROM) and Mayo Elbow Performance Score nd unipolar configuration (p=0.027) was statistically significant.

In our study, elbow osteoarthritis incidence after RHA was 56% in the humeroulnar joint and 72% in the humeroradial joint. RHA implant placement, posterior subluxation immediately postoperative and the duration of immobilization were significantly corelated with osteoarthritis.

A better description of the scarcely known endophyte microbiota in olive tree phyllosphere is the first step for elucidating the microbial interactions that lead to olive disease establishment. In this work, the fungal endophytic community of the phyllosphere of different olive tree cultivars (Cobrançosa, Galega vulgar, Madural, Picual, Verdeal Transmontana) is revealed by using a metabarcoding strategy targeting ITS1 barcode. A total of 460 OTUs were obtained, increasing the broad view of fungal endophytes inhabiting the olive tree phyllosphere, in particular yeast endophytes. New endophytes were persistently found in all cultivar tissues. Different olive tree cultivars depicted distinct endophyte communities. Olive cultivars exhibited dissimilar amounts of fungi with distinct ecological functions, which could explain at least in part their differential susceptibility/tolerance to olive diseases.Epigenetic studies on secondary metabolites (SMs) mainly relied so far on non-selective epigenetic factors deletion or feeding epigenetic inhibitors in Aspergillus niger. Although technologies developed for epigenome editing at specific loci now enable the direct study of the functional relevance of precise gene regulation and epigenetic modification, relevant assays are limited in filamentous fungi. Herein, we show that CRISPR/dCas9-mediated histone epigenetic modification systems efficiently reprogramed the expression of target genes in A. niger. First, we constructed a p300-dCas9 system and demonstrated the activation of a EGFP fluorescent reporter. Second, by precisely locating histone acetylase p300 on ATG adjacent region of secondary metabolic gene breF, the transcription of breF was activated. Third, p300-dCas9 was guided to the native polyketide synthase (PKS) gene fuml, which increased production of the compound fumonisin B2 detected by HPLC and LC-MS. Then, endogenous histone acetylase GcnE-dCas9 and histone deacetylases HosA-dCas9 and RpdA-dCas9 repressed the transcription of breF.
