This study explored trends in the quantity of inpatient psychiatry beds and in facility characteristics.
Using the National Bureau of Economic Research's Health Systems and Provider Database, the authors examined changes in the number of psychiatric facilities and beds, focusing on system ownership, profit status, facility type (general acute care versus freestanding), and affiliation with psychiatric hospital chains from 2010 to 2016.
The number of psychiatric beds was relatively unchanged from 2010 (N=112,182 beds) to 2016 (N=111,184). However, the number of beds operated by systems increased by 39.8% (N=15,803); for-profits, by 56.9% (N=8,572); and chains, by 16.7% (N=6,256). Net increases in beds were primarily concentrated in for-profit freestanding psychiatric hospitals. In 2016, most for-profit beds were part of chains (70.2%) and systems (61.3%).
Inpatient psychiatry has shifted toward increased ownership by systems, for-profits, and chains. Payers and policy makers should safeguard against profiteering, and future research should investigate the implications of these trends on quality of care.

Payers and policy makers should safeguard against profiteering, and future research should investigate the implications of these trends on quality of care.The limited inclusion of racial/ethnic minorities in the development and validation of parenting measures limits our understanding of whether parenting constructs are valid in racial and ethnic minorities. Tests of measurement invariance/equivalence (MI/E) of parenting measures can help evaluate the validity of parenting constructs among racial/ethnic minorities. This systematic review summarized studies on MI/E of parenting constructs by race/ethnicity and evaluated the strength of the evidence. A literature search was conducted using various databases and references to retrieve studies from the United States. Indeed, 10 studies were identified that tested for MI/E of eight parenting scales by race/ethnicity. Only one scale showed moderate evidence of MI/E, five showed weak evidence of MI/E, and two showed no evidence of MI/E. Most studies (80%) used factor analytic methods to test for MI/E, but only two studies (20%) examined all levels of invariance. These findings show that differences exist in how racial/ethnic minorities perceive parenting constructs. Further research is needed to develop more inclusive parenting measures, to protect against the ways in which biased measures may pathologize or misrepresent parenting practices among racial/ethnic minorities.The occupational stress inherent in firefighting poses both physiological and psychological risks to firefighters that have been found to possess a reciprocal nature. That is, the nature of these relationships in terms of indicator and impact are elusive, especially as it relates to sleep health (e.g., quality, quantity, hygiene, etc.) as a specific physiological risk and burnout as a specific psychological risk. A series of mediation models were assessed to examine the reciprocal relationships between occupational stress, burnout, and sleep health in a sample of 161 career firefighters. The mediation models confirmed reciprocity among the variables in so much that relationships were best described by the underlying mechanism at work. Comprehensive assessments of both subjective and objective markers of sleep health should be incorporated into firefighter research to supplement behavioral health assessments and interventions, especially related to burnout and occupational stress.Osseointegrated implantology initially concerned fully edentulous patients, then in time involved partially edentulous patients, and finally, has developed to include patients with single teeth missing on healed ridges and immediate implant placement after extraction. Thus, it was within a normal range of evidence to place implants in adolescents with congenital agenesis or prone to accidents or young adults under 30 after failure of a conservative dental treatment. However, over time the dental profession came to realize that this treatment modality was vulnerable to complications induced by maxillary/mandibular anterior growth with these patients. Although the literature may support the efficacy of osseointegrated implants for fully and partially edentulous patients, care and monitoring must be exercised over at least a 15-year period when treating adolescents with incomplete bone formation with single-tooth replacement.As dental composite materials have evolved, their properties and overall quality have improved. In this work, we reported a novel sunscreen molecule (E)-3-(5-bromofuran-2-yl)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (hereinafter referred to as FPPO-HBr) which tackled adverse problems of traditional sunscreen molecules as single energy relaxation pathway, lacking effective UVA light protection. Various nonradiative pathways were proposed and verified by combining the steady-state and femtosecond transient absorption (FTA) spectroscopy and theoretical calculation. Upon UV excitation, the FPPO-HBr mainly decays via excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) followed by conformation twist in ultrafast manner. Importantly, 1H NMR spectra proved that the FPPO-HBr could not undergo trans-cis photoisomerization. Additionally, excellent photostability was also observed for newly synthesized FPPO-HBr. The current work could provide new perspectives for sunscreen molecules synthesis and mechanism.Oligomerization of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) may play important roles in maturation, internalization, signaling, and pharmacology of these receptors. However, the nature and extent of their oligomerization is still under debate. In our study, Ste2p, a yeast mating pheromone GPCR, was tagged with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), mCherry, and with split florescent protein fragments at the receptor C-terminus. The Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) technique was used to detect receptors' oligomerization by calculating the energy transfer from EGFP to mCherry. Stimulation of Ste2p oligomers with the receptor ligand did not result in any significant change on observed FRET values. The bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assay was combined with FRET to further investigate the tetrameric complexes of Ste2p. Our results suggest that in its quiescent (nonligand-activated) state, Ste2p is found at least as a tetrameric complex on the plasma membrane. Intriguingly, receptor tetramers in their active form showed a significant increase in FRET. This study provides a direct in vivo visualization of Ste2p tetramers and the pheromone effect on the extent of the receptor oligomerization.Ionic liquids (ILs), depending on their cation-anion combinations, are known to influence the conformational properties and activities of proteins in a nonuniform manner. CL 318952,Visudyne To obtain microscopic understanding of such influence, it is important to characterize protein-IL interactions and explore the modified solvation environment around the protein. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the globular protein α-lactalbumin have been carried out in aqueous IL solutions containing 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cations (BMIM+) in combination with a series of anions with varying degree of hydrophilicity, namely, hexafluorophosphate (PF6-), ethyl sulfate (ETS-), acetate (OAc-), chloride (Cl-), dicyanamide (DCA-), and nitrate (NO3-) . The calculations revealed that ILs with hydrophobic and hydrophilic anions have contrasting influence on conformational flexibility of the protein. It is further observed that the BMIM+ cations exhibit site-specific orientations at the interface depending on the hydrophilicity of the anion component. Most importantly, the results demonstrated enhanced propensity of hydrophilic ILs to replace relatively weaker protein-water hydrogen bonds by stronger protein-IL hydrogen bonds at the protein surface as compared to the hydrophobic ILs. Such breaking of protein-water hydrogen bonds at a greater extent leads to greater loss of water hydrating the protein in the presence of hydrophilic ILs, thereby reducing the protein's stability.Vibrationally resonant sum-frequency generation (VR SFG) microscopy is an advanced imaging technique that can map out the intensity contrast of infrared and Raman active vibrational modes with micron to submicron lateral resolution. To broaden its applications and to obtain a molecular level of understanding, further technical advancement is needed to enable high-speed measurements of VR SFG microspectra at every pixel. In this study, we demonstrate a new VR SFG hyperspectral imaging platform combined with an ultrafast laser system operated at a repetition rate of 80 MHz. The multiplex configuration with broadband mid-infrared pulses makes it possible to measure a single microspectrum of CH/CH2 stretching modes in biological samples, such as starch granules and type I collagen tissue, with an exposure time of hundreds of milliseconds. Switching from the homodyne- to heterodyne-detected VR SFG hyperspectral imaging can be achieved by inserting a pair of optics into the beam path for local oscillator generation and delay time adjustment, which enables self-phase-stabilized spectral interferometry. We investigate the relationship between phase images of several different C-H modes and the relative orientation of collagen triple-helix in fibril bundles. The results show that the new multiplex VR SFG microscope operated at a high repetition rate is a powerful approach to probe the structural features and spatial arrangements of biological systems in detail.The hemibond is a nonclassical covalent bond formed between a radical (cation) and a closed shell molecule. The hemibond formation ability of water has attracted great interest, concerning its role in ionization of water. While many computational studies on the water hemibond have been performed, clear experimental evidence has been hardly reported because the hydrogen bond formation overwhelms the hemibond formation. In the present study, infrared photodissociation spectroscopy is applied to (H2O-Krn)+ (n = 1-3) radical cation clusters. The observed spectra of (H2O-Krn)+ are well reproduced by the anharmonic vibrational simulations based on the hemibonded isomer structures. The firm evidence of the hemibond formation ability of water is revealed.Exploring high-efficiency catalysts for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environments is attractive but remains challenging. Here we report a coordination regulation strategy to tune the atomic structure of Ru cluster catalysts supported on Ti3C2Tx MXene (Ru-Ti3C2Tx) for the HER. We identify that the coordination number (CN) of Ru-Ru could be slightly regulated from 2.1 to 2.8 by adjusting the synthesized temperature so as to achieve an optimal catalytic configuration. The Ru-Ti3C2Tx with a CNRu-Ru of 2.8 exhibits the best catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 96 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a mass activity about 11.5 times greater than the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the small Ru clusters have a stronger covalent interaction with Ti3C2Tx support leading to an optimal ΔGH* value. This work opens up a general avenue to modulate the coordination environment of catalysts for the HER.
