Introduction. Pulmonary infections caused by organisms of the Mycobacterium abscessus complex are increasingly prevalent in populations at risk, such as patients with cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and emphysema.Hypothesis. M. abscessus infection of the lung is not observed in immunocompetent individuals, which raises the possibility that the compromised lung environment is a suitable niche for the pathogen to thrive in due to the overproduction of mucus and high amounts of host cell lysis.Aim. Evaluate the ability of M. abscessus to form biofilm and grow utilizing in vitro conditions as seen in immunocompromised lungs of patients.Methodology. We compared biofilm formation and protein composition in the presence and absence of synthetic cystic fibrosis medium (SCFM) and evaluated the bacterial growth when exposed to human DNA.Results. M. abscessus is capable of forming biofilm in SCFM. By eliminating single components found in the medium, it became clear that magnesium works as a signal for the biofilm formation, and chelation of the divalent cations resulted in the suppression of biofilm formation. Investigation of the specific proteins expressed in the presence of SCFM and in the presence of SCFM lacking magnesium revealed many different proteins between the conditions. M. abscessus also exhibited growth in SCFM and in the presence of host cell DNA, although the mechanism of DNA utilization remains unclear.Conclusions. In vitro conditions mimicking the airways of patients with cystic fibrosis appear to facilitate M. abscessus establishment of infection, and elimination of magnesium from the environment may affect the ability of the pathogen to establish infection.We modified an accident analysis model for the study of acute suicidal episodes (ASEs). Our aim was to use this model (SCREAM, Suicidal Cognitions' Reliability and Error Analysis Method) as a lens to understand the worst-ever ASEs of nine patients who took part in repeated in-depth interviews. Guided by the theory of SCREAM including four predetermined categories, nine themes were identified. ASEs were triggered by interactions with the interpersonal and physical environment and spiraled into a state of lost control. The profiles of TUG1 and IGF2BP2 were elevated in CRC tissues, and IGF2BP2 enhanced TUG1's expression in CRC cells. TUG1 activated autophagy to facilitate CRC cells' resistance to DDP. TUG1 targets miR-195-5p, and miR-195-5p targets HDGF. Overexpression of miR-195-5p abated the cancer-promoting function of TUG1 and curbed the profile of the HDGF/DDX5/β-catenin axis. Cisplatin (DDP) is an effective drug for NSCLC, but tumors are prone to drug resistance. The current study set out to evaluate the regulatory effect of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) small nucleolar RNA host gene 12 (SNHG12) in extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from carcinoma-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) on DDP resistance in NSCLC cells. Firstly, NSCLC cells were treated with EVs, followed by detection of cell activity, IC50 values, cell proliferation and apoptosis, and Cy3-SNHG12. We observed that CAFs-EVs promoted IC50 values and cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis. In addition, we learned that lncRNA SNHG12 carried by CAFs-EVs into NSCLC facilitated DDP resistance of NSCLC cells. Furthermore, ELAV like RNA binding protein 1 (HuR/ELAVL1) binding to lncRNA SNHG12 and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) was verified and RNA stability of XIAP was also verified CAFs-EVs promoted RNA stability and transcription of XIAP, while silencing HuR could partially-reverse this promoting effect. Further joint experimentation showed that silencing XIAP partially inhibited DDP resistance in NSCLC cells. Additionally, the tumor growth and the positive rate of Ki67 and HuR were detected, which showed that CAFs-oe-EVs promoted the tumor and the positive rate of Ki67, as well as the levels of lncRNA SNHG12, HuR, and XIAP in vivo. Collectively, our findings indicated that lncRNA SNHG12 carried by CAFs-EVs into NSCLC cells promoted RNA stability and XIAP transcription by binding to HuR, thus augmenting DDP resistance in NSCLC cells.Ethnobotanical investigation was carried out using questionnaires among majority of El Kala (Algeria) inhabitants. The investigation found that lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus L.) is widely used in traditional therapy, especially in gastrointestinal and dermatological problems. Bioactive phytochemicals were determined by LC-MS/MS, and 14, 13, and 12 compounds were identified in leaves, stems and seeds, respectively. Flavonoids and phenolic acids were the most abundant compounds. Besides, antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH, β-carotene bleaching, and ferrous ions chelating tests; and leaves extracts were more effective (IC50 of 2.75, 3.45, 13.5 µg/ml), than essential oils (IC50 of 10.5, 70.5, 157.25 µg/ml), and standards (trolox, 4.75; BHT, 5.25 µg/ml), respectively.
This study aimed to compare a biaxial ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) with a lateral wedge insole in terms of the biomechanical and clinical outcomes in individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

A cross-over randomized design was used where 31 individuals (25 females and six males, mean age of 52.19 ± 4.12years) with knee osteoarthritis wore each intervention for two weeks with two weeks washout period. Three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data and clinical outcomes were collected to evaluate the effects of each intervention on knee adduction moment (KAM), pain, stiffness, and function.

Both orthoses significantly improved pain by 17 and 22%, function by 11 and 14%, the first peak KAM by 15.7 and 19.2%, the second peak KAM by 10.4 and 16.7%, and KAM impulse by 14.8 and 22.2%, respectively. However, the biaxial AFO significantly reduced the KAM and improved function compared to the lateral wedge insole (
 < 0.01).

However, these differences do not seem to be clinically significant.Several studies discussed the relationship between the toxicity of organophosphates (OPs) and carbamates pesticides and oxidative stress which affects human health. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pesticides on the induction of oxidative stress and hepatotoxicity. It was also focused on glutathione-S-transferase gene polymorphism in the modulation of these effects. In addition, the role of the educational level of exposed workers was studied. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), liver enzymes, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione S transferase (GST) were estimated at 100 pesticide-exposed workers (50 urban researchers (UE) and 50 rural sprayers (RE)), and 100 matched controls (50 urban controls (UC)and 50 rural controls (RC)). AChE and BuChE were decreased in RE and UE compared to RC. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were elevated in UE and UC compared to the RE and RC. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was elevated in UE compared to RE. MDA in RE and UE showed elevation compared to RC. There was a significant reduction in the levels of GSH, GST, and GPx in UE compared to RE and RC. The most sensitive pesticide-induced hepatotoxicity group were exposed workers with the GSTT1 genotype. Within these workers, ALT and ALP were significantly correlated with MDA and inversely correlated with AChE and BuChE, while AST was inversely correlated with AChE and BuChE only in UE. Conclusion GST gene polymorphisms appeared to have a significant role in workers' susceptibility to hepatotoxic effects due to occupational exposure to pesticides; GSTT1 was the most sensitive genotype.
Existing technologies to measure central blood pressure (CBP) intrinsically depend on peripheral pressure or calibration models derived from it. Pharmacological or physiological interventions yielding different central and peripheral responses compromise the accuracy of such methods. We present a high-frame-rate ultrasound technology for cuffless and calibration-free evaluation of BP from the carotid artery. The system uses a pair of single-element ultrasound transducers to capture the arterial diameter and local pulse wave velocity (PWV) for the evaluation of beat-by-beat BP employing a novel biomechanical model.
