Simulation based learning experiences help nurses gain skills necessary for independent practice. However, increased cognitive load placed on learners in simulation may affect learning outcomes.
The purpose of this integrative review was to synthesize what is known about nurses' cognitive load in simulation and summarize measurement approaches.
A search of CINAHL, Medline, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, and ERIC databases was limited to peer-reviewed studies published after 2006 in the English language, using the key words nurse, simulation, and cognitive load.
Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) integrative review method was used. Studies investigating advanced practice nurses or interprofessional teams were excluded.
Database and reference lists searches identified a total of 3077 records, and 20 met inclusion criteria. Simulation fidelity, time pressure, dual-tasking, interruptions, task complexity, distractions, and mismatched simulation objectives to learner ability increase nurses' cognitive load. However, past experience, pre-briefing, repeated scenarios, and worked-out modeling optimize cognitive load. Subjective and objective cognitive load measures help researchers understand cognitive load and define its relationship with other variables.
Simulation impacts nurses' cognitive load. Varying simulation designs to optimize cognitive load will improve learning outcomes. Future nursing simulation research should utilize well-validated cognitive load measures and measure cognitive load alongside other variables to further understand how cognitive load affects simulation outcomes.

Optimization of the sample digestion was carried out, and the recommended conditions were obtained at a temperature of 190 °C, with a digestion time of 40 min and in a mixture constituted by 2.3 mL of nitric acid, 1.0 mL of hydrogen peroxide and 4.7 mL of water. Adavivint inhibitor The method was applied in the analysis of chocolate bars, and the concentration ranges of the elements determined were (in mg kg-1) Ca (653-3096); Cr ( less then 0.6-2.8); Cu ( less then 0.16-19.5); Fe ( less then 1.6-227); Mg (147-2775); K (3554-8573); Mn ( less then 0.03-25.2); Na (45.6-1095); Ni (3.2-10.2); P (1111-22594) and Zn (4.8-33.3). The association of the proposed microwave-assisted acid digestion with the MIP OES technique was adequate for multi-element determination in chocolate bars for routine analysis.Cell wall polysaccharides in fruits act a pivotal role in their resistance to fungal invasion. Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Pat.) Griff. & Maubl. is a primary pathogenic fungus causing the spoilage of fresh longan fruit. In this study, the influences of L. theobromae inoculation on the disassembly of cell wall polysaccharides in pericarp of fresh longans and its association with L. theobromae-induced disease and softening development were investigated. In contrast to the control, samples with L. theobromae infection showed more severe disease development, lower firmness, lower amounts of cell wall materials, covalent-soluble pectin, ionic-soluble pectin, cellulose and hemicellulose, whereas higher value of water-soluble pectin, higher activities of cell wall polysaccharide-disassembling enzymes (cellulase, β-galactosidase, polygalacturonase and pectinesterase). These findings revealed that cell wall polysaccharides disassembly induced by enzymatic manipulation was an essential pathway for L. theobromae to infect harvested longans, and thus led to the disease occurrence and fruit softening.Coating damage destroys the integrity features critical for maintaining the modified atmosphere inside the fruit. In this study, we developed a self-healing edible coating that maintains its barrier properties for extending the shelf life of strawberries. Adavivint inhibitor The coating was fabricated via the layer-by-layer assembly of chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA). (SA/CS)3 formed by three assembly cycles could completely heal the visibly damaged area by treating water. The mechanical properties and the water and oxygen rates of the healed coating were 97%, 63%, and 95%, respectively, of the intact coating. (SA/CS)3 coating effectively delayed strawberry deterioration. Moreover, the coating reduced the impact of coating damage on strawberries by restoring the coating barrier properties. link2 The present findings have important implications for solving the reduction in freshness caused by coating damage.Chemical modifications of gelatin from mechanically separated chicken meat (MSM) residue were practiced using caffeic acid as a cross-linker. The effects of oxidation period (OP), cross-linking temperature (CT), and caffeic acid (CA) concentration were investigated. Experiments were performed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The effects of 16 different cross-linking modifications on the physicochemical properties of chicken gelatin gels were investigated. Maximum gel strength was determined at 12.5 min OP, 50 °C CT and 2.5% CA concentration and this was 63% higher than the control (uncross-linked chicken gelatin). Temperature has an increasing effect on the degree of cross-linking value up to a certain degree. The highest degree of cross-linking was observed at between 50° and 55 °C. The color characteristics of gels were affected by cross-linking having more brown color. Adavivint inhibitor Overall this study demonstrated that caffeic acid has a potential to be an efficient natural cross-linking factor increasing the mechanical properties of chicken gelatin thermo-irreversibly.Hidden mycotoxins have been reported to be "protected" by macromolecular substances to escape routine determination, but release to free mycotoxins under gastrointestinal conditions. Nowadays, the hidden zearalenone (ZEN) that binding with macromolecular zein has been found in maize. However, the binding mechanism of ZEN with zein in maize has not been clarified. In this study, the formation of ZEN-zein complex was investigated applying ultrafiltration, multi-spectroscopic and molecular modeling techniques. The steady-state and transient fluorescence analysis suggested the ZEN could interact with zein to form the complex driven by hydrophobic force and hydrogen bonds, which is in accordance with the molecular modeling studies. The conformational changes of zein induced by binding with ZEN were revealed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and circular dichroism (CD). Elucidating the binding mechanism between zein and ZEN could help the development of detecting hidden ZEN and guarantee the safety of maize products.Small molecules are immunochemically classified as hapten that lacking of at least two epitopes, usually using competitive format for establishing immunoassays. However, theoretically, noncompetitive immunoassay format is more sensitive and has a wider analytical range. In the present study, a novel hapten of halofuginone was synthesized and used to produce a monoclonal antibody (mAb). By analyzing the binding kinetics, we found that the affinity of analyte-enzyme to mAb was much greater than that of analyte, which could result in a low sensitivity of competitive assay format. Based on this, we established a novel noncompetitive immunoassay by using a replacement approach. link2 The noncompetitive format has obvious advantages in sensitivity and analytical range, which promoted approximately 3.5- and 5-fold, respectively, compared to the competitive immunoassay. Ultimately, the newly designed noncompetitive immunoassay in this work will provide insights as well as alternative method to traditional small molecule competitive assays. This study evaluated the effects of treatments of squid pen chitooligosaccharide (COS) or epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) or COS/EGCG mixture (11, w/w) at different concentrations (0, 200, and 400 mg/kg) on the discoloration and quality changes in yellowfin tuna slices stored at 4 °C for 12 days. Tuna slices added with 200 and 400 mg/kg of COS (C2 and C4, respectively) showed the lowest reduction in oxymyoglobin and a* value (redness) ascertained by the lower metmyoglobin formation than other samples. Additionally, C2 and C4 samples showed a lower total viable count and TBARS value than the remaining samples. link2 EGCG alone and its mixture with COS exhibited lower efficacy in retaining the quality loss than COS alone. COS at both levels effectively reduced the metMb formation. It maintained the redness with sensory acceptability of slices up to 9 days, and C4 sample prolonged shelf-life for 12 days based on the microbiological limit.Pomelo peel as a by-product from pomelo consumption is rich in various nutrients and functional compounds, while most of the by-product is disposed as wastes. The utilization of pomelo peels could not only result in valued-added products/ingredients, but also reduce the environmental threats. By mainly reviewing the recent articles, pomelo peels could be directly used to produce candied pomelo peel, tea, jams, etc. link3 link3 Additionally, functional components (essential oils, pectin, polyphenols, etc.) could be extracted from pomelo peels and applied in food, pharmaceutical and chemical fields. The extraction methods exerted important influences on the composition, physicochemical properties, bioactivities and structures of the resultant fractions. Furthermore, pomelo peel was exploited to make adsorbents, bioethanol, etc. link3 For the future investigations, the functionality- or bioactivity-oriented regimes to recovery valuable components from pomelo peel should be developed in an economic, effective and eco-friendly way and their applicability in large-scale production should be addressed. The aim of research was to determine polyphenols bioaccessibility and antioxidant properties of thermally-treated skimmed goat milk enriched with sunflower bee-collected pollen through in vitro digestion. HPLC analysis confirmed that pollen-enriched milk contained flavonols as the main phenolic fraction (80.7-76.2%) followed by phenolic acids (14.2-17.4%). Among individual compounds quercetin-3-O-glucoside (155.1-197.2 μg/L) and p-coumaric acid (29.5-30.7 μg/L) were the main quantified flavonols and phenolic acids, respectively. After digestion of milk/pollen sample, total polyphenols recovery was 30.71% with higher phenolic acids recovery (40.1%) compared to flavonols (28.3%) indicating strong interactions between caprine milk casein micelles and pollen polyphenols. Applied antioxidant assays (phosphomolybdenum, ABTS•+scavenging activity and ferrous-ion-chelating capacity) have confirmed complexity of prepared product- it had high ability to quench ABTS•+ radicals and to form chelating complexes with Fe2+ ions. Digestion provoked 20% reduction in total antioxidant capacity compared to the initial sample. TTSG milk/pollen powder could be good functional ingredient.
