Which Baby Cot is Right For Your Baby?
Cots protect babies from falling out of bed or suffocating when they fall between the mattress and cot. They should have no sharp edges or protrusions.
The majority of cots have four secure sides to ensure your baby's safety at all times. They are usually of the fixed size and could be converted to a toddler bed when your child grows.
Standard Cots
Standard cots can be placed on top of the parents' bed, giving parents to see their child as they sleep. They have sides that are fixed to prevent babies from stepping over them. Once your baby is capable of standing and crawling, these sides are dangerous and should be removed.
Cots are usually circular in shape to help reduce space and are also smaller than traditional cots. They are easy to clean and offer a safe and comfortable place for your child to sleep. They are easy to transport and typically come with castors or wheels so you can move them around.
Some cots come with extra features, like drawers or teething rails, however, many are basic and basic. Natural materials are the best since they are durable and more resistant to wear. They should be free of any toys or pillows since they can create the risk of suffocation to young children.
A cot bed is a larger version of the cot which includes removable sides and an end panel. This means it can be turned into a toddler bed when your child is no longer using it. This feature is especially useful when you are planning to have more than one child because it means you don't have to switch between different types of beds and reduces costs by not purchasing separate beds. The majority of cot beds can be used from birth to around two years old dependent on the size and weight of your infant.
Drop-side Cots
If you have back discomfort, a cot that has drop-sides is the ideal alternative. You won't need to bend as much over the side. Back pain is a common issue for women who are pregnant and new mothers, especially those who have suffered back injuries in the past.
This type of cot means that your baby can be reached more easily during the day without you needing to be concerned about your back or lifting them. However, you must make sure that the distance between the base of the mattress and the base of the cot is at a minimum of 4cm so that your child can't climb out.
If you're not sure which cot is right for your needs We suggest calling Baby's Hyperstore to talk through your options. We can assist you in finding a safe, stylish cot that will grow with your child, meeting all safety standards required by law.
John Lewis Elementary cot is our top choice. It scored high marks for its easy assembly. The mother tester Gina said it was "a dream to build - extremely clear instructions with photos". It comes with a teething rail as well as a drawer to store things in and three different positions for the mattress's height.
The cot's sturdiness and sturdy build makes it a good choice for babies who can sleep all night. But make sure that the cot is made from a sanitized material such as solid wood and that the slats are secured correctly and not loosened.
Another thing to look out for is whether the cot has been certified as meeting British safety standards. Prior to 2011, US models were not tested the same way as UK models which resulted in the USA banning some dangerous designs. Look for a model that locks automatically the drop side when it is in the up position and requires two consecutive actions to unlock it, which prevents your baby from being able to pull the side down and climb out.
Corner Cots
While photos of styled nursery pictures may show blankets artistically draped over a cot according to Red Nose, a charity fighting to stop sudden infant deaths, all fabrics placed near the baby must be tucked in tightly to reduce the risk of being suffocated. Red Nose warns that curtains and blinds shouldn't be left hanging over the crib as they could strangle babies or cause them to crash their heads as they move around in their sleep.
