Maternally-derived hormones affect offspring physiological and behavioural phenotype, plausibly as an adaptive response to maternal environmental conditions. Corticosterone (CORT), the principal avian glucocorticoid produced in response to stress, is recognised as a potential mediator of such maternal reproductive effects. Maternally-derived yolk CORT is implicated in mediating offspring growth and hatchling begging behaviour. However, determining the potential for maternal effects in opportunistic breeders subject to variable environments relies on understanding whether natural variation in maternal circulating hormones may directly impact the embryo during development. Therefore, we tested whether elevated maternal CORT concentrations increase yolk CORT concentrations in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) eggs. We remotely dosed breeding females with biologically-relevant doses of CORT, or the oil vehicle, 0-3 h prior to the predicted time of ovulation, and allowed pairs to produce two clutches, one under each treatment, in a crosswise, balanced design. CORT dosing elevated maternal plasma CORT and increased mean yolk CORT by a factor of 1.75 compared to the egg yolks of control mothers. Importantly, CORT concentrations did not differ between inner and outer layers of yolk. We found no egg lay order effect and maternal CORT dosing did not influence reproductive outputs (clutch initiation date, clutch size or egg mass). Our results confirm the direct impact of biologically-relevant increases in maternal CORT on yolk CORT, providing evidence that maternal CORT concentrations during yolk deposition to the follicle alters embryonic exogenous CORT exposure. Further research is required to determine the impact of maternal CORT on embryonic developmental programming.
Cesarean scar pregnancies (CSP) are at high risk of pregnancy complications including placenta previa with antepartum hemorrhage, placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) and uterine rupture.
To evaluate the development of the utero-placental circulation in the first half of pregnancy in ongoing CSP and compare it to pregnancies implanted in the lower uterine segment above a prior cesarean section scar with no evidence of PAS at delivery.
This was a retrospective case-control study conducted in two tertiary referral centers. The study group included 27 women diagnosed with a live caesarean scar pregnancy in the first trimester of pregnancy who elected to conservative management. The control group included 27 women diagnosed with a low-lying/placenta previa at 19-22 weeks of gestation who had a first and an early second trimester ultrasound examinations. In both groups, the first ultrasound examination was carried out at 6-10 weeks to establish pregnancy location, viability and to confirm the gestational age. The vascular changes in the utero-placental and intervillous circulations in CSPs are due to the loss of the normal uterine structure in the scar area and the development of placental tissue in proximity of large diameter arteries of the outer uterine wall. The intensity of these vascular changes, development of PAS and risk of uterine rupture depend on the RMT of the cesarean scar defect at the start of pregnancy. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of the utero-placental vascular changes associated with CSP should help in identifying those cases that may develop major complications and thus contribute to counselling women about the risks associated with different management strategies.

To study the prognostic features of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and shed light on its future therapy.
Retrospective cohort study of a longitudinal national cohort of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control.
All patients with suspected CJD are reported to the CJD surveillance unit of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. An expert committee discussed the reported cases and designated a consensus-based diagnosis. From 1996 to 2020, a total of 809 cases were referred to the CJD surveillance unit for confirmation; of these, 441 cases (women, n= 230) were determined to be sporadic CJD.
We investigated the clinical manifestations and laboratory findings for 400 patients diagnosed with definite or probable sporadic CJD. We used Kaplan-Meier analyses and Cox proportional hazards model to identify prognostic factors.

The antinociceptive effects of these fragments (2, 6, 20, and 60 nmol/mouse) were tested at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 min after intravenous (i.v.) injection. These fragments induced dose- and time-related antinociceptive effects relative to saline. Using the near infrared fluorescence imaging experiments, our results showed that these fragments could cross the brain-blood barrier and enter the brain. The antinociceptive effects of these fragments were completely antagonized by naloxone (intracerebroventricular, i.c.v.); however, naloxone methiodide (intraperitoneal, i.p.), which is the peripheral restricted opioid receptor antagonist, did not antagonize these antinociceptive effects. Furthermore, the GHS-R1α antagonist [D-Lys3]-GHRP-6 (i.c.v.) completely antagonized these antinociceptive effects, too. These results suggested that these fragments induced antinociceptive effects through central opioid receptors and GHS-R1α. In conclusion, our studies indicated that these active fragments of ghrelin could cross the brain-blood barrier and enter the brain and induce antinociceptive effects through central opioid receptors and GHS-R1α after intravenous injection.

Contrast enhanced mammography (CEM), is an emerging iodine-based modified dual energy mammography technique. In addition to having the same advantages as standard full-field digital mammography (FFDM), CEM provides information regarding tumor enhancement, relying on tumor angiogenesis, similar to dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). This article reviews current literature on CEM and highlights considerations that are critical to the successful use of this modality.

Despite substantial tribal, state, and federal effort, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) suicide rates have changed little in the last 30 years, prompting attention to new and innovative approaches to this persistent health disparity. Suicide prevention interventions with demonstrated success in other populations may be useful in AI/AN communities. Caring Contacts is a suicide prevention intervention that has been adapted and shown to reduce suicide ideation, attempts, and deaths in other populations.
We used a community-based participatory research approach to gather qualitative data from community members, healthcare providers, and leaders in four AI/AN communities. These data were analyzed thematically and used to adapt Caring Contacts for use in a subsequent clinical trial with AI/AN people at high risk for suicide.
A total of 189 community members and other health system stakeholders in four tribal communities participated in focus groups and interviews. Caring Contacts was perceived in allhealth disparities.We employ three national representative samples to examine the moderating effect race has on the relationship between religious identities and environmental identities and behaviors. By and large, religious identities are more consistently associated with the environmental considerations of Whites than it does for African Americans and Hispanics. Among Whites, religious liberals are more likely than their religiously conservative counterparts to; identify with the environmental movement, make environmentally conscious consumer choices, and be active in the environmental movement. Such is not the case, however, for African Americans and Hispanics religion very rarely associates with their environmental identities and behaviors. In explaining our findings, we discuss the role that the disparate racial experiences of these groups may play in accounting for the differential role religion plays in their environmental identities and behaviors.
